Electroencephalographic, neuroradiologic, and neurodevelopmental studies in infants with subclavian steal during ECMO.

Color Doppler imaging revealed a subclavian steal--retrograde flow in the right vertebral artery which shunted blood from the brain's posterior circulation to the right arm via the subclavian artery--in 17 of 54 infants (31%) during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); right vertebral artery flow returned to antegrade after ECMO and removal of the right common carotid arterial cannula. When subjects with and without a subclavian steal were compared, there were no statistically significant differences in mortality; in the results of neonatal electroencephalograms, cranial ultrasound stud

[An experimental study of hearing loss caused by mumps virus in guinea pigs].

Guinea pigs were inoculated with mumps virus into the scala tympani to establish an experimental animal model of viral labyrinthitis. Electr … hitis caused by mumps virus presented various lesions in the stria vascularis, Reissner's membrane, basilar membrane and Corti's organ. Viral particles were found in the marginal, intermediate and capillary endothelial cells of striae vascularis. Pathological changes of the hair cells of the experimental animals were closely associated with elevations of CAP thres …

Cerebral vasospasm in a double-injection model in rabbit.

The present study was designed to assess the occurrence of cerebral vasospasm following an experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage model in rabbits. Sixty-nine New Zealand albino rabbits were used in this study. One milliliter of fresh arterial blood was injected through the surgically exposed atlanto-occipital membrane over a period of 20 seconds. The procedure was then repeated 24 hours later. Fifty animals underwent digital subtraction angiography at one of the following prefixed intervals: 1, 3, or 8 days after the second injection hemorrhage. Nineteen animals underwent one angiographic exami

Factors associated with incomplete insertion of electrodes in cochlear implant surgery: a histopathologic study.

OBJECTIVES: Atraumatic and complete insertion of the electrode array is a stated objective of cochlear implant surgery. However, it is known … ible histopathologic indicators of resistance to insertion of the electrode due to contact with the basilar membrane, osseous spiral lamina and/or spiral ligament were evaluated by analysis of serial sections from the temporal bones along the course of the electrode tracks. RESULTS: Obvious obstruction by abnormal intracochlear bone or soft tissue accounted for o …

[Intra-arterial thrombolysis for acute angiographically proven occlusion in bifurcation of basilar artery. Case report].

In a 52 year-old male patient with a past history of two strokes, an occlusion of the basilar cerebral artery in the area of bifurcation into the posterior cerebral arteries was angiographically confirmed. Following an intra-arterial application of rt-PA a partial revascularization of the occluded posterior arteries was observed. After an interval of 8 hours rt-PA was administered again, resulting in a complete recanalization of the arteries. The patient's neurological state was stabilized but not improved, despite a systematic anti-thrombotic treatment. His sudden death on the 23rd day of tre

Reduced acoustic startle response and peripheral hearing loss in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Hearing dysfunction has been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in humans, but there is little data on the auditory function of mouse … s for tone bursts between 8 and 32 kHz at 13-14 months of age. Finally, cochleae were extracted and basilar membranes were dissected to count hair cell loss across the cochlea. The 5xFAD mice showed significantly greater loss of both inner and outer hair cells at the apical and basal ends of the basilar membrane than wild-type mice at 15-16 months of age. These re …

Masking of sounds by a background noise--cochlear mechanical correlates.

In the search for cochlear correlates of auditory masking by noise stimuli, we recorded basilar membrane (BM) vibrations evoked by either tone or click signals in the presence of varying levels of background noise. The BM vibrations were recorded from basal regions in healthy cochleae of anaesthetized chinchilla and gerbil. Non-linear interactions that could underpin various aspects of psychophysical masking data, including both compression and suppression at the BM level, were observed. The suppression effects, whereby the amplitude of the responses to each stimulus component could be reduced…

Discrepancy between the localization of in vivo bound immunoglobulins in the skin and in vitro binding sites of circulating anti-BMZ antibodies in bullous pemphigoid: immunoelectron microscopic studies.

The immunoelectron microscopic reaction products showing in vivo bound immunoglobulins or complement in the basement membrane zone (BMZ) of the lesional skin of 12 patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) were homogeneously distributed in the lamina lucida in 3 cases, just beneath the basilar surface of the basal cells in 5 cases, and were associated with the basal lamina in 4 cases. No reaction products could be found beneath the melanocytes in any of the first 2 groups; however, positive reaction products were found on the basal lamina beneath some melanocytes, and were associated with the deta

Salicylate-induced changes in organ of Corti vibrations.

Intra organ of Corti (OC) vibrations differ from those measured at the basilar membrane (BM), with higher amplitudes and a wide-band nonlinearity extending well below a region's best frequency. The vibrations are boosted by the cochlear amplifier, the active processes within the mammalian hearing organ, and are thus sensitive to metabolic or pharmacological manipulation. We introduced salicylate, a known blocker of outer hair cell (OHC) based electromotility, into the perilymphatic space by applying sodium salicylate onto the round window membrane. Vibration patterns of an area of the OC were …

Basilar meningitis associated with ethmoid and sphenoid cephaloceles.

Nontuberculous causes of basilar meningitis are rare. This study presents the case of a male who developed fever and meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. He developed multiple cranial nerve palsies and imaging findings consistent with basilar meningitis and ventriculitis. Computed tomographic scans of the floor of the anterior fossa were performed after the detection of a cephalocele on magnetic resonance imaging. This imaging revealed a defect in the cribiform plate and fovea ethmoidalis with a large nasoethmoidal cephalocele. There was a second separate defect and cephalocele invol

Stria vascularis pathology and recovery following noise exposure.

The time course of chinchilla stria pathology (edema) and recovery after one and two noise exposures is quantitatively and qualitatively described. Gross stria edema is present one, three, and seven days following one noise exposure; stria edema is not as severe nor as frequent following two noise exposures. Stria cell and vessel pathology are also observed at seven and ten days after one, but not two, noise exposures. Possible mechanisms of stria pathology and recovery after noise exposure are discussed.

Neuroimaging features of Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a rare genetic disease characterized by distinctive facial dysmorphia and dwarfism. Multiple organ system involvement is typical. Various central nervous system (CNS) aberrations have been described in the pathology literature; however, the spectrum of neuroimaging manifestations is less well documented. OBJECTIVE: To present neuroimaging findings from a series of eight patients with Cornelia de Lange syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CT/MR database at a single academic children's hospital was searched for the terms "Cornelia," "Brachmann" and "de

Temporal bone histopathology associated with occlusion of vertebrobasilar arteries.

We have presented the histological findings in the inner ear of a patient who experienced occlusion of the vertebral and basilar arteries 17 days before death. A large infarction was observed in the medulla and pons on the right side. There was severe degenerative change in the right membranous labyrinth as well as in the right cochlear and vestibular nerves, which was presumably caused by ischemia from occlusion of the right labyrinthine artery. The organ of Corti and sensory epithelia of the vestibular labyrinth showed the most advanced state of degeneration. The histopathological appearance

The Clival Line as an Important Arachnoid Landmark During Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy: An Anatomic Study.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is a well-accepted treatment option instead of ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement in cases of obstructive hydrocephalus. A sufficient flow from the ventricles to the basal cisterns requires perforation of the arachnoid membranes in the retroclival region. This point is critical to achieve an optimal outcome. The complex arachnoid relations were investigated in the retroclival region from the viewpoint of ETV, and anatomic landmarks were defined for subarachnoid dissections. METHODS: Sixty fresh human cadaveric specimens were dissected under

Analysis of Click and Swept-Tone Auditory Brainstem Response Results for Moderate and Severe Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is one of the commonly used methods in clinical settings to evaluate the hearing sensitivity and auditory function. The current ABR measurement usually adopts click sound as the stimuli. However, there may be partial ABR amplitude attenuation due to the delay characteristics of the cochlear traveling wave along the basilar membrane. To solve that problem, a swept-tone method was proposed, in which the show-up time of different frequency components was adjusted to compensate the delay characteristics of the cochlear basilar membrane; therefore, di…

Cerebral aneurysm regrowth and coil unraveling after incomplete Guglielmi detachable coil embolization: serial angiographical and histological findings.

A 69-year-old woman suffered subarachnoid hemorrhage due to rupture of an aneurysm at the tip of the basilar artery. The aneurysm was treated by endovascular treatment using Guglielmi detachable coils but the aneurysm dome could not be completely packed. Serial angiography at 10 and 18 months after embolization showed progressive regrowth of the aneurysm with loosening and unraveling of the packed coils. The patient died accidentally after head injury and autopsy was performed. Examination of the aneurysm showed further regrowth and "relative coil compaction" of the coil mass. Histological exa
