BACKGROUND: The objective of this investigation was to study the prevalence of xerosis, eczema, and hair and nail abnormalities in PLWHA in Cotonou.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on the records of PLWHA in Cotonou. All PLWHA with xerosis, eczema, or abnormal appendages were included.
RESULTS: Forty-seven patients had xerosis or eczema. Their mean age was 38 years; the sex ratio 0.51 and the mean CD4 count 89 cells/mm(3). Twenty-three patients had xerosis, which affected the whole body (n = 20), lower limb (n = 2), limbs and trunk (n = 1), without gender difference

The aim of this study was to conduct a large-scale freshwater snail survey in Benin to assess the malacological diversity and the larval trematode infections with a focus on Schistosoma genus. The Beffa form of Simulium soubrense Vajime & Dunbar, a member of the S. sanctipauli sub-complex of the S. damnosum complex, was found breeding throughout rivers in the Togo-Benin Gap, as far north as 9 degrees 30'N. This study was carried out to determine the presence of intestinal parasites and their correlation with CD4(+) T-cell counts and demographics among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients in Benin City, Nigeria. Stool specimens from 2,000 HIV-positive patients and 500 controls (HIV-negative individuals) were examined for ova, cysts, or parasites, using standard procedures. BCG remains the only possible prophylactic intervention against Buruli ulcer (BU). Estimating its public health impact on BU control is an important issue. We conducted a case-control study to investigate the vaccine effectiveness of routine BCG vaccine against BU in southern Benin. We screened 650 febrile patients from Benin for Rift Valley fever and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever viruses during 2022-2023. None were positive by reverse transcription PCR; 1.1% and 0.3%, respectively, had virus-specific IgG. False-positive results from malaria-associated antibodies likely reacting with histidine-tagged viral antigens mandate careful validation of serologic tests in malaria-endemic regions.
