Cause-specific mortality after spousal bereavement in a Danish register-based cohort.

Spousal bereavement is associated with increased all-cause mortality, but less is known for cause-specific mortality. We estimated the average effect of bereavement on cause-specific mortality. Furthermore, we developed and evaluated the performance of prediction models estimating individualized mortality risks. This matched cohort study leveraged nationwide registry data on 223,500 married Danish individuals aged ≥ 65 years. Individuals were followed from bereavement date until death, emigration, or 3-year end of follow-up. G-estimation was used to estimate the average effect of bereavement o…

Rumination, Hopelessness, Behavioural Avoidance and Psychopathology Symptoms After Bereavement: Serial Mediation Analyses.

Bereavement can precipitate severe mental health problems, including major depressive disorder and prolonged grief disorder. Rumination is a risk factor of post-loss mental health problems, and as such, a better understanding of its working mechanisms may inform clinical practice. Rumination is theorized to take up time and increase feelings of hopelessness, leading to inactivity and social withdrawal, which in turn fuels post-loss psychopathology. Yet, these ideas have not been tested comprehensively. Therefore, we aimed to fill this gap in knowledge. A sample of bereaved adults (87% women) c…

Experiences of Parental Suicide-Bereavement: A Longitudinal Qualitative Analysis Over Two Years.

Limited research exists on the experiences of parents bereaved by suicide. Our earlier qualitative analysis examined the experiences of parents' suicide bereavement at 6 and 12 months after their loss. The current study aimed to extend the analysis over 24 months, outlining the key themes of parents' suicide bereavement experience. In the frames of a longitudinal study of suicide bereavement in Queensland, Australia, parents were interviewed at 6, 12, and 24 months after their loss. Thematic analysis was used to further explore new themes and three key themes identified in earlier analyses: se…

Bereavement and children's mental health: recognising the effects of early parental loss.

Parental death in childhood is a traumatic event and, as a consequence, bereaved children can be at an increased risk of developing mental health issues in adulthood. This article details an extended literature review that was undertaken to explore the effects of early parental death on bereaved children's mental health and identifies implications for healthcare practice. Several electronic databases were searched and eight articles were selected for inclusion in this review. Four themes were identified from the literature: child's age at parental death; cause of parental death; type of parent

Post-bereavement hallucinatory experiences: A critical overview of population and clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Removal of the "bereavement exclusion" criterion for major depression and proposed research criteria for persistent complex bereavement disorder in DSM-V pose new compelling issues regarding the adequacy of current nosographical boundaries. Post-bereavement hallucinatory experiences (PBHE) are abnormal sensory experiences that are frequently reported by bereaved individuals without a history of mental disorder. Given current uncertainty over the continuum of psychotic experiences in the general population, whether or not they should be considered pathological remains unclear. METH…

Is rumination after bereavement linked with loss avoidance? Evidence from eye-tracking.

Rumination is a risk factor in adjustment to bereavement. It is associated with and predicts psychopathology after loss. Yet, the function of rumination in bereavement remains unclear. In the past, researchers often assumed rumination to be a maladaptive confrontation process. However, based on cognitive avoidance theories of worry in generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and rumination after post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), others have suggested that rumination may serve to avoid painful aspects of the loss, thereby contributing to complicated grief. To examine if rumination is linked with…

Risk of substance use disorders following prenatal or postnatal exposure to bereavement.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder (SUD) is associated with major socioeconomic consequences but its etiology is only partly known. The disease predisposition may be established early in life and prenatal stress may play a role. We aimed to examine whether prenatal maternal bereavement, as the indicator of prenatal stress, was associated with an increased risk of SUD in offspring. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included all children born in Denmark (N=1686416) and Sweden (N=2563659) from 1973 to 1997. The exposure was maternal bereavement by the death of a close relative 1 year…

The role of peer relationships in parental bereavement during childhood and adolescence.

This article reviews current knowledge concerning the relationship between peer support and adjustment outcomes and experiences for parentally bereaved children. A brief overview of the effects of parental bereavement and factors influencing immediate and long-term adjustment is provided, followed by an overview of peer-provided social support and its relationship to adjustment. Current findings on the predictive value of peer support for adjustment are then discussed, with emphasis on the reciprocal positive and negative influences that peer support and adjustment (or lack thereof) exert. Are…

Patterns of Parenting and their Associations with Bereaved Children's Maladaptive and Adaptive Functioning.

The parent-child relationship influences children's mental health (e.g., posttraumatic stress symptoms, psychosocial difficulties) and adaptive outcomes (e.g., posttraumatic growth, resilience) following the death of a loved one. The current study employed a person-centered approach to identify patterns of parenting and their associations with bereaved children's functioning. This study included 112 bereaved children, aged 8-17 (Mage = 12.41, SD = 2.58; 52.2% female), recruited from community organizations in the MidSouth, United States. A latent profile analysis was used to identify parenting

Living with sibling' drug use. Bereaved siblings' family stories.

Family members' problematic drug use is challenging for siblings affecting their well-being and their relationships within the family. Research about siblings living with brothers or sisters' problematic drug use and research on bereaved siblings' experiences indicates that life situations and support needs for both minor siblings and adult siblings can easily be overlooked, both in practice and in research. This article contributes to this knowledge gap by examining how siblings provide meaning to their sibling's drug use problem and how they position themselves and other family members accor

Legacy Building: The Experience of Heartbeat Recordings for Bereaved Caregivers in Pediatrics.

The death of a child is a devastating event that can lead to chronic sorrow and great stress among parents and caregivers. Legacy-building and memory-making experiences for anticipatory grief and bereavement have become increasingly popular in pediatric hospitals, including the use of heartbeat recordings. This intervention created by Brian Schreck at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center involves audio recording the patient's heartbeat or other respiratory sounds with a digital stethoscope to construct and preserve the patient's legacy, as well as to act as a therapeutic tool.

Thiamine deficiency in the bereaved after cancer-related spousal loss.

OBJECTIVE: Thiamine deficiency (TD) is recognized in various kinds of disease with associated loss of appetite including cancer. However, it has not been recognized to date in bereaved partners after spousal loss from cancer. METHOD: From a series of bereaved partners who lost a spouse to cancer, we report on those who developed TD after bereavement. RESULT: Case 1 was a 57-year-old woman who sought consultation at our "bereavement clinic." Her husband had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one year earlier and had died one month previously. At the first visit, she was observed to suffer …

The role of rumination in the guilt associated with bereavement according to cause of death.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the role rumination plays in the relationship between cause of death and the guilt present during bereavement. The sample consisted of 90 people that had suffered a loss due to an expected or unexpected natural death, suicide or accident. The results suggest that rumination increases the levels of guilt felt by people that had suffered a loss due to suicide compared to those whose loss was due to an expected natural death. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms with an influence on bereavement.
