It is well known that applications of a single dose of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) to mouse ears induces an acute inflammatory reaction consisting of erythema, edema and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) infiltration. Rhus dermatitis, experimentally induced in humans, was used as a model for determining the efficacy of various proprietary topical steroids. One-centimeter squares of vesicular dermatitis were induced by patch application of Rhus oleoresin. Fourteen cases are described in which the local application of corticosteroid preparations to ringworm infections of the skin have resulted in unusual clinical pictures. A kerion-like lesion due to Trichophyton rubrum, intertriginous infections simulating candidiasis and due to Epidermophyton floccosum, and pictures resembling poikiloderma, papular rosacea, and indeterminate leprosy are among the changes that were seen in these patients.
