Subsurface enamel lesions and root surface caries-like lesions were consistently produced in vitro using Streptococcus mutans FA1 cultured in thioglycollate broth containing 3.5% w/v dextrose and 2% w/v gelatin. When viewed in polarized light and after imbibition in water, the enamel lesions had a negatively birefringent surface zone and positively birefringent body of the lesion. We proposed and demonstrated a high spatial resolution distributed transverse-load (TL) sensor based on polarization-sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry (P-OFDR) using a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF). Two new alkaline earth barbiturates, Ca(H3C4N2O3)2·H2O and Sr(H5C8N4O5)2·4H2O, were synthesized via the mild hydrothermal technique. For Ca( … s a phase-matchable material with a moderate SHG response (ca. 1.15× that of KDP). Furthermore, the birefringence values of the two crystals were measured as 0.49 and 0.475 at 546.1 nm, respectively. BACKGROUND: Asteroides hyalosis is a degenerative condition of the vitreous of unknown etiology in which calcium soaps accumulate on vitreous fibrils in the eye. Cytologically, the condition needs to be differentiated from foreign body reactions, synchysis scintillans and proteinaceous coagula.
CASE: A 69-year-old male presented with a history of diminished vision and floaters in the right eye. Examination of the vitreous fluid revealed roughly spherical structures. When examined with polarized light, these structures showed central, birefringent, crystalline particles.

PURPOSE: To observe the detailed structures of the inner and outer sclera at various stages of myopic maculopathy using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT).
METHODS: A PS-OCT system was developed for imaging the posterior eye using a swept laser.
