Mitochondrial Heteroplasmy and PCR Amplification Bias Lead to Wrong Species Delimitation with High Confidence in the South American and Antarctic Marine Bivalve Aequiyoldia eightsii Species Complex.

The species delimitation of the marine bivalve species complex Aequiyoldia eightsii in South America and Antarctica is complicated by mitochondrial heteroplasmy and amplification bias in molecular barcoding. In this study, we compare different data sources (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences; nuclear and mitochondrial SNPs). Whilst all the data suggest that populations on either side of the Drake Passage belong to different species, the picture is less clear within Antarctic populations, which harbor three distinct mitochondrial lineages (p-dist ≈ 6%) that coexist in

Immune Enhancement of Clam Peptides on Immunosuppressed Mice Induced by Hydrocortisone.

Clam peptides, marine-derived biological peptides, have been broadly investigated and applied as health foods, among which immunomodulation is one of their biological activities that cannot be ignored in vivo. In this study, we concentrated on exploring the effects of Ruditapes philippinarum peptides (RPPs) on immunomodulation and the balance of intestinal microbiota in hydrocortisone (HC)-induced immunosuppressed mice. The results revealed that RPPs could increase the thymus and spleen indices and number of white blood cells, promote the secretion level of cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, and IN

Molecular Cloning and Characteristics of a Lectin from the Bivalve Glycymeris yessoensis.

C-type lectins (CTLs) are a family of carbohydrate-binding proteins that mediate multiple biological events, including adhesion between cells, the turnover of serum glycoproteins, and innate immune system reactions to prospective invaders. Here, we describe the cDNA cloning of lectin from the bivalve Glycymeris yessoensis (GYL), which encodes 161 amino acids and the C-type carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) with EPN and WND motifs. The deduced amino acid sequence showed similarity to other CTLs. GYL is a glycoprotein containing two N-glycosylation sites per subunit. N-glycans are made up of

Detection and Molecular Characterization of Enteric Viruses in Bivalve Mollusks Collected in Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Viral bivalve contamination is a recognized food safety hazard. Therefore, this study investigated the detection rates, seasonality, quantification, and genetic diversity of enteric viruses in bivalve samples (mussels and oysters). We collected 97 shellfish samples between March 2018 and February 2020. The screening of samples by qPCR or RT-qPCR revealed the detection of norovirus (42.3%), rotavirus A (RVA; 16.5%), human adenovirus (HAdV; 24.7%), and human bocavirus (HBoV; 13.4%). There was no detection of hepatitis A virus. In total, 58.8% of shellfish samples tested positive for one or more

Enhanced discrimination of basophilic cells on mussel digestive gland tissue sections by means of toluidine-eosin staining.

Changes in the cell type composition of the digestive gland epithelium constitute a common and recognized biological response to stress in mussels. Usually, these changes are identified as alterations in the relative proportion of basophilic cells, determined in tissue sections stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and measured in terms of volume density of basophilic cells (VvBAS) after stereological quantification. However, the identification and discrimination of basophilic cells may be a difficult issue, even for a trained operator, especially when, in circumstances of environmental stress,

11,500 y of human-clam relationships provide long-term context for intertidal management in the Salish Sea, British Columbia.

Historical ecology can provide insights into the long-term and complex relationships between humans and culturally important species and ecosystems, thereby extending baselines for modern management. We bring together paleoecological, archaeological, and modern clam records to explore the relationship between humans and butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) throughout the Holocene in the northern Salish Sea of British Columbia, Canada. We compare butter clam size and growth patterns from different temporal, environmental, and cultural contexts spanning 11,500 y to present. Butter clam size and gro

Accumulation and Biotransformation of Dinophysis Toxins by the Surf Clam Mesodesma donacium.

Surf clams, Mesodesma donacium, were shown to accumulate toxins from Dinophysis acuminata blooms. Only pectenotoxin 2 (PTX2) and some of its derivatives were found, and no toxins from the okadaic acid group were detected. PTX2 seems to be transformed to PTX2 seco-acid (PTX2sa), which was found in concentrations more than ten-fold those of PTX2. The seco-acid was transformed to acyl-derivatives by esterification with different fatty acids. The estimated amount of these derivatives in the mollusks was much higher than that of PTX2. Most esters were originated by even carbon chain fatty acids, bu

Are the TiO2 NPs a "Trojan horse" for personal care products (PCPs) in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum?

In recent years, increasing quantities of personal care products (PCPs) are being released into the environment. However, data about bioaccumulation and toxicity are scarce; and extraction and analytical approaches are not well developed. In this work, the marine clam Ruditapes philippinarum, selected as model organism, has been employed to investigate bioaccumulation, antioxidant enzyme activities and DNA damage due to exposure to TiO2 nanoparticles and bulk TiO2 (inorganic compounds that are frequent components of PCPs, plastics, paints and coatings, foods and disinfectant water treatments).

Histopathology of mussels (Mytilus sp.) from the Tamar estuary, UK.

This study assessed numerous histological parameters as markers of health status in mussels (Mytilus spp.) collected from several locations along a contamination gradient on the River Tamar and two coastal sites on the north and south coast of Cornwall, UK. Twenty-seven health parameters were assessed including the presence of pathogens, inflammatory lesions, non-specific pathologies and reproductive condition. Logistic regression showed that reproductive condition and inflammatory lesions showed changes indicative of a contamination gradient response. Mussel populations further upstream withi

Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in green mussels (Perna viridis) from shell-fish markets of Thailand.

Mussels filter large volumes of water and can concentrate pathogenic organisms, which may act as potential vehicles of transmission to the consumer. A survey study was carried out to investigate the presence of Cryptosporidium protozoan parasites in green mussels (Perna viridis), the smussles pecies most destined for consumption in Thailand. In total, 56 samples were examined from Bangkok (n = 24) and Samut Prakan (n = 32) a wholesale shell-fish markets located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The market for green mussels was closed to the mussel culture placed along the coastal line and

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis.

Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model, these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore, strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known

[Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy on a clam shell fragment lodged in the ileocecal valve].

Herein we describe what may be the first case of ESWL used in the treatment of mechanical ileus caused by a fragment of clam shell lodged in the terminal ileum. The 66-year-old patient was referred by the emergency department with symptoms and signs of upper GI tract obstruction. ESWL with the modified Dornier HM3 was performed under neuroleptoanalgesia with the patient in the prone decubitus position. 1700 shock waves at 20 Kv were used to achieve fragmentation and restore intestinal transit, thus avoiding surgery.

[The life cycle of Gorgoderina rochalimai Pereira and Cuocolo, 1940, a Digenea parasite of Bufo marinus in Guadeloupe].

The sporocysts of G. rochalimai were found in Guadeloupe, in the bivalve Mollusc Sphaeriidae Eupera viridans. The cystocercous cercariae are ingested by Odonatan larvae in which the encystement occurs. The Toad Bufo marinus is the definitive host of the parasite. The life-cycle of G. rochalimai shows close similarities with the ones already known in many other speicies of Gorgoderidae.

Ontogenetic dynamics of the subepidermal spicule complex in Nudibranchia (Gastropoda): the case of Onchidoris muricata.

Spicules are mineral-based biocomposites skeletal structures that are widely distributed among phylogenetically distant groups of invertebrates (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Echinodermata). Subepidermal spicules are formed under the ectodermal epithelium and are characterized for all groups except mollusks (Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia), their spicules are located on the surface of the body. However, one group of mollusks (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) have unique subepidermal spicules that have never been detected above the ectodermal epithelium and similarly to those characterized fo…

Carbonate-System Perturbation by Invasive Bivalves Threatens Drinking-Water Security in Calcium-Limited Catchments.

Invasive bivalve ecosystem engineers pose an under-recognized threat to drinking-water security. In the Waikato River, New Zealand, rapid establishment of Corbicula fluminea (Asian clam) since their 2023 incursion has depleted dissolved calcium ∼24% below historical baselines through biogenic CaCO3 fixation at ∼14 ± 14 tonnes day-1 (2024-2025) while simultaneously raising alkalinity ∼15-20% through catabolic NH4+/HCO3- excretion. Residence-time mass balances yield a basin-scale population density of 370 ± 323 individuals m-2, consistent with independent field surveys (557 ± 435 individuals m-2

Ensuring adaptability and applicability of long-term contaminant monitoring initiatives: A discussion of NOAA's National Mussel Watch Program current practices and future approaches.

The maintenance of long-term contaminant monitoring programs, which are critical tools for establishing and providing the historical baselines necessary to guide future management and research efforts, faces inherent challenges related to evolving management priorities, budgetary constraints, variable end-user needs, and the dynamic nature of the systems in which they operate. This short communication explores these difficulties, proposes adaptive strategies, and highlights the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) 40-year continuous national contaminant monitoring initiativ

Genes of filter-feeding species as a potential toolkit for monitoring microplastic impacts.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment and impact organisms at multiple levels. Understanding their actual effects on wild populations is urgently needed. This study develops a toolkit to monitor changes in gene expression induced by MPs in natural environments, focusing on filter-feeding and bioindicator species from diverse ecological and taxonomic groups. Six candidate genes -Caspase, HSP70, HSP90, PK, SOD, and VTG- and nine filter-feeding species -two branchiopods, one copepod, five bivalves and one fish- were selected based on differential expression in response to M
