Cerebral blood flow velocity in untreated panic disorder patients: a transcranial Doppler ultrasonography study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare resting cerebral blood flow velocity values of unmedicated patients in the acute phase of panic disorder with resting values of healthy control subjects. METHODS: Nineteen unmedicated panic disorder patients were assessed for degree of anxiety using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale. The patients and 20 healthy age-matched control subjects were then insonated at rest using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). For TCD, the anterior, the middle, and the posterior cerebral arteries were insonated bilaterally in all patients. RESULTS: Compared wit

Intraobserver reproducibility of Doppler measurements of uterine artery blood flow velocity in premenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the intraobserver repeatability of Doppler measurements of uterine artery blood flow velocity and the contribution of various factors to within-subject variance. DESIGN: Seventeen healthy premenopausal women underwent vaginal Doppler ultrasound examination of the uterine artery by the same observer. Three measurements were taken at each of three sites: 1) the currently recommended sampling site; 2) the ascending branch of the uterine artery at a level between the lower and middle third of the corpus uteri; 3) 1.5 cm lateral to the recommended sampling site. Middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity in elite power athletes during maximal weight-lifting.

Cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) has been shown to significantly increase during dynamic exercise (running) secondary to increases in cardiac output. Static exercise (weight-lifting) induces supraphysiological arterial pressures up to 450/380 mmHg, and thus may alter CBFV. Catastrophic brain injuries such as stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhage and retinal detachment have been associated with weight-lifting. A recent study has shown that intra-ocular pressure (IOP), which is an indirect measure of intracranial pressure, elevates to pathophysiologic levels

A patent ductus arteriosus is associated with reduced middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity.

UNLABELLED: The study objective was to determine the effect of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on cerebral blood flow velocity in ventilated, very low birth weight neonates, in the first 5 days of life. Sonography of the right middle cerebral artery and ductus arteriosus was performed using a colour Doppler technique. Statistical analysis was by stepwise regression. Thirty-one neonates without and 43 with a PDA, mean (SD) birth weight 1004 g +/- 192 and 1071 g +/- 227 respectively, were studied. The end diastolic and mean velocities were reduced (P = 0.008 and P = 0.129) and the resistive ind

Cerebral blood flow velocity during and after sustained isometric skeletal muscle contractions in man.

1. Twenty-seven young subjects used their right hand to perform sustained, isometric contractions at 40% of maximum for 2 min while lying supine. 2. During the last 30 s of exercise, mean arterial blood pressure increased by 38 +/- 4 mmHg (mean +/- S.E.M.) and heart rate by 27 +/- 2 beats/min. 3. Nineteen of the subjects respired eucapnically during exercise, increasing ventilation by 4.1 +/- 0.5 litres/min. Eight subjects hyperventilated (7.1-19.6 litres/min) and decreased end-tidal PCO2 by 8.2 to 15.1 mmHg during the last minute of exercise. 4. In the eucapnic subjects mean flow velocity in

Cerebral blood flow velocity and pulsation in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and periventricular hemorrhage.

The present study addressed the hypotheses that cerebral ischemia and/or excessive cerebral blood pulsation contribute to periventricular hemorrhage in preterm newborns with respiratory distress and that the pulse width is a valuable tool to estimate the contribution of cerebral blood pulsation. These hypotheses were tested by following preterm newborns at risk for respiratory distress and periventricular hemorrhage. We monitored for cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV), cerebral pulse width, and cerebral pulsatility index; for patent ductus arteriosus, capillary Pco2, heart rate (HR) and behav

Advanced primary open-angle glaucoma is associated with decreased ophthalmic artery blood-flow velocity.

Recent findings indicate that low-tension glaucoma is associated with impaired ocular blood flow. In the present study we evaluated the blood-flow in the ophthalmic artery in regulated open-angle glaucoma. Using pulsed Doppler sonography (4 MHz), the blood-flow velocity in the ophthalmic artery of 183 eyes of 95 persons with open-angle glaucoma was examined (mean age, 66.6 +/- 14.5 years). The patients showed advanced glaucomatous optic-nerve atrophy (cup-to-disk ratio, 0.74 +/- 0.27) and regulated intraocular pressure (IOP: range, 8-25 mm Hg; mean, 16.4 +/- 3.9 mm Hg). The blood pressure (BP)

Internal carotid blood flow velocity in children with cerebral palsy by Doppler Ultrasound method.

Cerebral blood flow assessed noninvasively by Doppler ultrasound technique in 30 children with cerebral palsy. The average maximal blood velocity (A/L) and end-diastolic blood velocity (d) of internal carotid artery were measured before and during brief digital compression of contralateral common carotid artery. Both A/L and d values in children with cerebral palsy were significantly lower than those observed in normal healthy children. In 13 children with spastic hemiplegia, no significant difference in either A/L or d was seen between the non-affected side and affected side both before and d

Ultrasound Image Velocimetry for High Spatiotemporal Resolution Blood Flow Velocity Field Mapping in Mice.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal hemodynamics is thought to play an essential role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Mouse models are widely used for elucidating the underlying mechanisms; however, their small size and high heart rates make it difficult to perform quantitative flow velocity field mapping with sufficient temporal resolution. Our objective was to develop a noninvasive method for quantitative flow field mapping in mice based on speckle-tracking from high-frequency ultrasound B-mode imaging. METHODS: Ultrasound ECG-gated kilohertz visualization (EKV) was performed on a mouse-aort

Decreased coronary blood flow velocity in two patients with coronary microvascular spasm: case series†.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic criteria for coronary microvascular spasm (CMS) have not yet been fully established. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of CMS in which decreased coronary blood flow velocities were observed during acetylcholine (ACH) provocation tests. The first patient suffered from chest pain occurring while at rest. The patient underwent coronary angiography (CAG), which revealed a decrease in the average peak velocity (APV) from 29 cm/s to 14 cm/s and a slow flow phenomenon following ACH injection. The second patient suffered from chest pain occurring during the night. The p

Cerebral blood flow velocity acutely decreases in newborns who respond to inhaled nitric oxide.

Regional cerebral blood flow is directly proportional to the Doppler velocity time integral of flow in corresponding cerebral arteries. This study was performed to determine whether an acute change in the velocity time integral of cerebral blood flow occurs in newborns with pulmonary hypertension who experience an acute improvement in pulmonary hemodynamics and gas exchange at the onset of inhaled nitric oxide therapy. Twenty-two newborns with lung disease and an oxygenation index >25 were treated with 10 to 20 parts per million inhaled nitric oxide. Measurements of heart rate, blood pressure,

4D Blood Flow Reconstruction Over the Entire Ventricle From Wall Motion and Blood Velocity Derived From Ultrasound Data.

We demonstrate a new method to recover 4D blood flow over the entire ventricle from partial blood velocity measurements using multiple 3D+t colour Doppler images and ventricular wall motion estimated using 3D+t BMode images. We apply our approach to realistic simulated data to ascertain the ability of the method to deal with incomplete data, as typically happens in clinical practice. Experiments using synthetic data show that the use of wall motion improves velocity reconstruction, shows more accurate flow patterns and improves mean accuracy particularly when coverage of the ventricle is poor.
