Surgical management of radial physeal growth disturbance in dogs.

Premature closure of the distal radial physis can result in severe developmental deformities of the involved forelimb. Recognition of the problem early in its course is necessary to minimize valgus deformity and secondary osteoarthritis of the elbow and carpus. By forcing the radius to elongate, following radial osteotomy and use of a Stader apparatus, these deformities can be minimized.

A New View of Bone Loss in Phenylketonuria.

Osteopenia is common in phenylalanine hydroxylase deficient phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is managed by limiting dietary phenylalanine. Osteopenia in PKU might reflect a therapeutic diet, with reduced bone forming materials. However, osteopenia occurs in patients who never received dietary therapy or following short-term therapy. Humans and animal studies find no correlation between bone loss, plasma hyperphenylalaninemia, bone formation, and resorption markers. Work in the Pahenu2 mouse recently showed a mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) developmental defect in the osteoblast pathway. Specifically, Pa

Skin and bones. I.

Skin disorders in which a radiograph may detect associated bony changes or abnormalities of calcification are discussed. They are grouped into eight categories: (1) inherited diseases (e.g., alkaptonuria, neurofibromatosis); (2) congenital disorders (e.g., Sturge-Weber and Proteus syndromes); (3) inflammatory conditions (e.g., dermatomyositis, sarcoidosis); (4) infections (e.g., dental sinus, syphilis); (5) neoplasias (e.g., histiocytosis, mastocytosis); (6) drug- and environment-induced (e.g., acroosteolysis, retinoid toxicity); (7) calcinosis cutis; and (8) osteoma cutis. Part I of our revie

Current state of the art in treatment of Mendelian disease: Skeletal dysplasias.

The current state of the art in treatment of Mendelian disease, specifically skeletal dysplasias, benefits tremendously from Dr. Victor McKusick's early delineation and standardization of the nomenclature surrounding these conditions. Through close observation and careful description of each dysplasia to flesh out the nosologic backbone of the genetic skeletal disorders, individuals with the same diagnosis were identified and grouped together for genetic interrogation. These efforts have resulted in the identification of the genetic etiology of nearly all recognized skeletal disorders. This, i

Respiratory diseases in the late middle ages.

Respiratory diseases have beset humanity from the earliest times. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory diseases in the inhabitants of a large medieval city. We analyzed 110 skeletons, coming from 12 to 17th century of individuals of either gender. In order to assess pneumatisation of paranasal sinuses and nasal septum curvature, radiographs were performed in the PA projection. Nasal septum deviation was found in 50% of individuals, asymmetry of the frontal sinuses and their aplasia in 11% of individuals. There was no significant relationship between the curvature

Tviblindi algorithm identifies branching developmental trajectories of human B-cell development and describes abnormalities in RAG-1 and WAS patients.

Detailed knowledge of human B-cell development is crucial for the proper interpretation of inborn errors of immunity and malignant diseases. It is of interest to understand the kinetics of protein expression changes during development, but also to properly interpret the major and possibly alternative developmental trajectories. We have investigated human samples from healthy individuals with the aim of describing all B-cell developmental trajectories. We validated a 30-parameter mass cytometry panel and demonstrated the utility of "vaevictis" visualization of B-cell developmental stages. We us

Vestibular abnormalities in congenital disorders.

This paper reviews the histopathologic features of vestibular abnormalities in congenital disorders affecting the inner ear, based upon a comprehensive literature survey and a review of cases in our temporal bone collection. The review proceeds in three systematic steps. First, we surveyed associated diseases with the major phenotypic features of congenital abnormalities of the inner ear (including the internal auditory canal and otic capsule). Second, the vestibular anomalies are examined specifically. Finally, the anomalies are discussed from a developmental perspective. Among vestibular ano

Seckel's syndrome: presentation of one case associated with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

The authors present the case of one patient affected with Seckel's syndrome which came to their observation as a result of pain in the hip with limping, diagnosed after Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. There seems to be an accidental relationship between the two diseases, although Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is frequently described in all cases of endocrinous dwarfism.

[Disorders of bone metabolism in premature infants].

Extremely low birth weight infants are particularly prone to rickets (osteopenia) due to their rapid growth and to deficient intake of calcium and phosphate. In some premature infants suffering from phosphate depletion hypercalcemia syndrome may precede bone demineralisation. Additionally, the adverse effects of calciprivic drugs (phenytoin, phenobarbital, glucocorticoids, furosemide, heparin) contributing to the development of neonatal rickets are discussed. Phosphorus depleted or heparin treated experimental animals develop impairment of mineralisation as manifested by rickets or osteomalaci

Analysis of femoroacetabular impingement by a triade of label-free optical spectroscopy techniques.

Understanding the biochemical mechanisms of hip joint diseases remains challenging. Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition where developmental deformities of the hip joint reduce mobility and cause tissue damage, with characteristic red staining observed in affected cartilage. Here we show how combining three complementary optical analysis techniques- laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy- reveals tissue alterations without invasive procedures. Our analysis identifies elevated amide I levels indicating bone damage, reduced hyd

Bone Marrow Adipocyte Developmental Origin and Biology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review explores how the relationships between bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) adipogenesis with advancing age, obesity, and/or bone diseases (osteopenia or osteoporosis) contribute to mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal pathophysiology. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have re-defined adipose tissue as a dynamic, vital organ with functions extending beyond its historic identity restricted solely to that of an energy reservoir or sink. "State of the art" methodologies provide novel insights into the developmental origin, physiology, and function of different adipose

Perinatal Diagnostic Approach to Fetal Skeletal Dysplasias: Six Years Experience of a Tertiary Center.

Skeletal dysplasias (SDs) constitute a group of heterogeneous disorders affecting growth morphology of the chondro-osseous tissues. Prenatal diagnosis of SD is a considerable clinical challenge due to phenotypic variability. We performed a retrospective analysis of the fetal autopsies series conducted between January 2006 and December 2012 at our center. SD was detected in 54 (10%) out of 542 fetal autopsy cases which included; 11.1% thanatophoric dysplasia (n = 6), 7.4% achondroplasia (n = 4), 3.7% osteogenesis imperfect (n = 2), 1.9% Jarcho-Levin Syndrome (n = 1), 1.9% arthrogryposis (n = 1)

[Developmental age idiopathic osteoporosis--diagnostics and rehabilitation].

Developmental age idiopathic osteoporosis is a rare metabolic disease, which pathomechanism is different from involutional osteoporosis. Its etiology still remains unknown. An onset of the disease is rapid, affecting previously healthy children of both sexes aged 3.5-15. A rapid loss of bone mass is especially remarkable. Clinical picture of the disease includes pain localised initially in feet, then in thoraco-lumbar section of the vertebral column, gradually progressive deformation of the longitudinal axes of limbs, gait pathology and progressive depletion of a lower limb muscle strength. MRI findings in pediatric patients with scurvy.

In modern times scurvy is a rarely encountered disease caused by ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency. However, sporadic cases of scurvy persist, particularly within the pediatric population. Recent individual case reports highlight an increased incidence of scurvy among patients with autism or developmental delay, with isolated case reports detailing the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of scurvy in these pediatric populations. We present the MRI findings of scurvy in four patients with autism or developmental delay, and review the literature on MRI findings in pediatric patients wit
