Bony entrapment of the superficial peroneal nerve.

Peripheral nerve injury occasionally results from long bone fractures, but bony entrapment of a peripheral nerve occurs infrequently. Bony entrapment of a peripheral nerve is usually associated with upper extremity fractures. In a 34-year-old man bony entrapment of the superficial peroneal nerve occurred in a healed midshaft fibular fracture. The patient complained of progressive pain over the distribution of the superficial peroneal nerve after sustaining a closed displaced tibial and fibular fracture that healed in nonanatomic alignment. Exploration revealed bony entrapment of the superficia

Moderate static magnetic field promotes fracture healing and regulates iron metabolism in mice.

BACKGROUND: Fractures are the most common orthopedic diseases. It is known that static magnetic fields (SMFs) can contribute to the maintenance of bone health. However, the effect and mechanism of SMFs on fracture is still unclear. This study is aim to investigate the effect of moderate static magnetic fields (MMFs) on bone structure and metabolism during fracture healing. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a unilateral open transverse tibial fracture, and following treatment under geomagnetic field (GMF) or MMF. The micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) and three-poi

Neutrophil-derived catecholamines mediate negative stress effects on bone.

Mental traumatization is associated with long-bone growth retardation, osteoporosis and increased fracture risk. We revealed earlier that mental trauma disturbs cartilage-to-bone transition during bone growth and repair in mice. Trauma increased tyrosine hydroxylase-expressing neutrophils in bone marrow and fracture callus. Here we show that tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the fracture hematoma of patients correlates positively with acknowledged stress, depression, and pain scores as well as individual ratings of healing-impairment and pain-perception post-fracture. Moreover, mice lacking t

Fracture-induced pain-like behaviours in a femoral fracture mouse model.

UNLABELLED: This study is the first comprehensive characterisation of the pain phenotype after fracture using both evoked and naturalistic behaviours in adult male and ovariectomised female mice. It also shows that an anti-nerve growth factor (NGF) therapy could be considered to reduce pain after fracture surgery. INTRODUCTION: Bone fractures are common due to the ageing population and very painful even after healing. The phenotype of this pain is still poorly understood. We aimed to characterise it in a femoral fracture model in mice. METHODS: We employed both adult male, and female ovariec

New opportunities for fracture healing detection: Impedance spectroscopy measurements correlate to tissue composition in fractures.

Accurate evaluation of fracture healing is important for clinical decisions on when to begin weight-bearing and when early intervention is necessary in cases of fracture nonunion. While the stages of healing involving hematoma, cartilage, trabecular bone, and cortical bone have been well characterized histologically, physicians typically track fracture healing by using subjective physical examinations and radiographic techniques that are only able to detect mineralized stages of bone healing. This exposes the need for a quantitative, reliable technique to monitor fracture healing, and particul

Application of an effective medium theory for modeling ultrasound wave propagation in healing long bones.

Quantitative ultrasound has recently drawn significant interest in the monitoring of the bone healing process. Several research groups have studied ultrasound propagation in healing bones numerically, assuming callus to be a homogeneous and isotropic medium, thus neglecting the multiple scattering phenomena that occur due to the porous nature of callus. In this study, we model ultrasound wave propagation in healing long bones using an iterative effective medium approximation (IEMA), which has been shown to be significantly accurate for highly concentrated elastic mixtures. First, the effective

[Callus distraction lengthening of the tibia with the intramedullary kinetic nail (case report)].

In this report the first experience with callus distraction lengthening using the intramedullary kinetic nail is described. This was performed on a left tibia with a total shortening of 34 mm. The distraction phase lasted 36 days and the rate of distraction was 0.95 mm per day. The full weight-bearing of the treated lower extremity was allowed at 12 weeks after surgery. Complete consolidation of the callus was achieved at 112 days and the consolidation index was 3.21 days/mm. No serious complications were recorded during the post-operative period. At 12 months after surgery, the patient showed

Complications of bone lengthening.

Bone lengthening is a surgical method which requires meticulous technique, continuous attention, and satisfactory cooperation on the part of the patient. The absence of common criteria makes it difficult both to classify the complications which arise, and to compare them with those of other authors. We report the complications in a group of 61 patients who were studied prospectively. Disorders of the lengthening callus accounted for 45% of all complications, and a further 33% arose in the joints. The remainder occurred in the bone, the apparatus and the soft tissues, of which the most common w

Treatment of post-replantation retardation of bone growth by callus distraction. A report of two cases.

Hand and forearm replantation in children may lead to premature closure of the distal radial or ulnar growth-plates. Following successful replantation, bone growth may be retarded, resulting in a length discrepancy between the radius and ulna with secondary deviation of the replanted hand. We present two cases in which callus distraction was employed to correct a length discrepancy. The relative merits of the various treatment options are discussed.

Calcitonin and fracture healing. An experimental study on rats.

The effects of systemically administered calcitonin (CT) on fracture healing were analyzed in an experimental study on rats. The healing of a fracture was followed from 3 days up to 9 weeks postoperatively. Half of the rats in each age group were given daily CT 10 MRC-U/kg body wt s.c. Mechanical properties of the healing tibial fractures (tension strength) as well as various connective tissue components of the callus tissue were analyzed. No difference in the radiological or microscopical appearance of the fractures was detectable between the animals receiving CT and the controls. In the bioc

Effect of recombinant human osteogenic protein-1 on the healing of a freshly closed diaphyseal fracture.

Osteogenic protein-1 (OP-1), or bone morphogenetic protein-7, is an osteoinductive morphogen that is involved in embryonic skeletogenesis and in bone repair. In bone defect models without spontaneous healing, local administration of recombinant human OP-1 (rhOP-1) induces complete healing. To investigate the ability of rhOP-1 to accelerate normal physiologic fracture healing, an experimental study was performed. In 40 adult female goats a closed tibial fracture was made, stabilized with an external fixator, and treated as follows: (1) no injection; (2) injection of 1 mg rhOP-1 dissolved in aqu

Callus distraction for the treatment of acquired radial club-hand deformity after osteomyelitis.

We report our experience of the use of callus distraction with a monolateral fixator for the treatment of acquired radial club-hand deformity after osteomyelitis. Between 1994 and 2004, 13 patients with a mean age of eight years (4 to 15) were treated by callus distraction with a monolateral fixator after a preliminary period of at least four weeks in a corrective short-arm cast. All patients achieved bony union and were satisfied with the functional and cosmetic outcome. There were no major complications, but three patients required cancellous bone grafting at the docking site for delayed uni

Does vanillic acid affect fracture healing? An experimental study in a rat model of femur fracture.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the effects of vanillic acid (VA) on fracture healing radiologically, histologically, immunohistochemically, and biomechanically using a rat femur open fracture injury model. METHODS: 32 male Wistar-Albino rats were used and divided into two groups: the study group (VA) and the control group. From the time they were operated on until they were sacrificed, the rats in the study group were given 100 mg/kg/day VA by oral gavage. After sacrification, the femurs were analyzed. RESULTS: It was observed that the Huo histological scoring was significa

Effect of different composite plates on the healing of femoral fractures.

In this paper, the effects of different composite plates on the healing of femoral fractures were studied by numerical simulation. The healing model of femoral fracture was established by ABAQUS display solver. Based on the fuzzy logic theory, the process of callus differentiation at femoral fracture was considered under the joint action of biological variables and mechanical stimulation, and the healing process of femur was simulated. Compare the stress on the screw, concentration of callus bone and cartilage, and callus healing performance of the carbon/epoxy composite (WSN3k) plate, glass/p

Vibration therapy as an effective approach to improve bone healing in diabetic rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of vibration therapy on fracture healing in diabetic and non-diabetic rats. METHODS: 148 rats underwent fracture surgery and were assigned to four groups: (1) SHAM: weight-matched non-diabetic rats, (2) SHAM+VT: non-diabetic rats treated with vibration therapy (VT), (3) DM: diabetic rats, and (4) DM+VT: diabetic rats treated with VT. Thirty days after diabetes induction with streptozotocin, animals underwent bone fracture, followed by surgical stabilization. Three days after bone fracture, rats began VT. Bone healing was assessed on days 14 and 28 post-fr

Single-cell RNAseq provides insight into altered immune cell populations in human fracture nonunions.

Nonunion describes bone fractures that fail to heal, resulting in the fracture callus failing to fully ossify or, in atrophic cases, not forming altogether. Fracture healing is regulated, in part, by the balance of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes occurring within the bone marrow and surface cell populations. We sought to further understand the role of osteoimmunology (i.e., study of the close relationship between the immune system and bone) by examining immune cell gene expression via single-cell RNA sequencing of intramedullary canal tissue obtained from human patients with fe

Deficiency of PDK1 in osteoclasts delays fracture healing and repair.

Bone fractures are common traumatic injuries of the musculoskeletal system. However, delayed union and non‑union fractures are a major clinical problem that present significant socioeconomic burden to patients and the public health sector. The bone‑resorbing osteoclasts and bone‑forming osteoblasts serve important roles in the fracture repair/healing process. Osteoclast deficiency or decreased osteoblast activity negatively impacts fracture healing. We previously demonstrated that the specific deletion of the serine/threonine kinase 3‑phosphoinositide‑dependent protein kinase 1 (PDK1) in osteo
