The Association of Depressive Symptoms and Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Northwestern Botswana.

Although links between mental health and intimate partner violence (IPV) have been discussed extensively in the scholarly literature, little empirical data exist about these phenomena in Botswana. This study addressed this gap by examining the nature, extent, and risk factors associated with symptoms of major depressive disorders (MDD) using cross-sectional data collected in 2009-2010 in northwestern Botswana. A random sample of 469 women participated in semistructured interviews about their lives, health, and experiences with violence. Thirty-one percent of respondents were found to meet the …

Genetic and epidemiological analysis of norovirus from children with gastroenteritis in Botswana, 2013-2015.

BACKGROUND: Norovirus is a leading cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide with a peak of disease seen in children. The epidemiological analysis regarding the virus strains in Africa is limited. The first report of norovirus in Botswana was in 2010 and currently, the prevalence and circulating genotypes of norovirus are unknown, as the country has no systems to report the norovirus cases. This study investigated the prevalence, patterns and molecular characteristics of norovirus infections among children ≤5 years of age admitted with acute gastroenteritis at four hospitals in Botswana. METHO…

The clinical manifestations of Rhodesian trypanosomiasis: an account of cases contracted in the Okavango swamps of Botswana.

Over 100 years ago, David Livingstone reported the presence of tsetse flies in the Okavango swamps in northern Botswana. They have persisted in the region and recently have been responsible for many cases of Rhodesian sleeping sickness caused by Trypanosoma rhodesiense in visitors to the area. The clinical manifestations in illustrative cases of this disease are described. One patient who refused treatment died five months after being infected. One patient died of encephalopathy complicating treatment with Melarsoprol (Mel B) and one died in a hemorrhagic state associated with a heavy parasite…

Hookworm infection in Kweneng District, Botswana, A prevalence survey and a controlled treatment trial.

Stool specimens from a sample of schoolchildren at six schools in Kweneng District were examined for hookworm infection, using the brine flotation method. Necator americanus was the only hookworm identified. The western part of the District forms part of the Kalahari Desert, and in four villages here 90%, 88%, 88% and 86% of the children were infected. In two villages in the eastern non-desert part, only 13% and 9% were infected. Most infections were light. There was no significant correlation between severity of infection and anaemia. In one school (228 pupils; 86% infected with hookworm), ha

Pre-Eclampsia Rates in Women With and Without HIV in Modern ART Era in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: In the era of widespread antiretroviral therapy (ART), the relationship between HIV and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy remains unclear. This study compares the prevalence, severity, and neonatal outcomes of pre-eclampsia in women living with HIV (WLWH) and women without HIV in Botswana, a country with high ART coverage. SETTING: The study was conducted at Princess Marina Hospital, Botswana's largest public tertiary referral center, where national ART guidelines support universal treatment and high rates of viral suppression among pregnant WLWH. METHODS: We analyzed data from…

A Review of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hepatitis B Virus Co-Infection in Botswana.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, contributing to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for an estimated 68% of incident HBV infections, where co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is common and associated with poorer clinical outcomes. In Botswana, limited HBV screening and the absence of established HBV management guidelines persist despite reported HIV-HBV co-infection rates ranging from 1.1% to 10.6%. This scoping review aimed to summarise existing research on HBV and HIV-HBV co-infection in Bots…

Internalized HIV Stigma, Sleep Problems, and Depressive Symptoms in People with HIV in Botswana.

This study investigates the impact of internalized HIV stigma on sleep problems and depression in people living with HIV (PLWH) in Botswana. It also explores whether sleep problems mediate the relationship between internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms, given that sleep disturbance is a symptom of depression and often predates a depressive episode. Secondary analysis was conducted using baseline data from a pilot randomized controlled trial on 58 virally unsuppressed PLWH in Gaborone, Botswana. Internalized HIV stigma, sleep disturbance and daytime impairment, and depressive symptoms …

Molecular Testing of Zoonotic Bacteria in Cattle, Sheep, and Goat Abortion Cases in Botswana.

Abortion is one of the major causes of economic losses in livestock production worldwide. Because several factors can lead to abortion in cattle, sheep and goats, laboratory diagnosis, including the molecular detection of pathogens causing abortion, is often necessary. Bacterial zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis, coxiellosis, leptospirosis, and listeriosis have been implicated in livestock abortion, but they are under diagnosed and under-reported in most developing countries, including Botswana. This study applied a recently developed multiplex high-resolution melting analysis technique, c…

Maternal biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and pregnancy outcomes in women with and without HIV in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV-1 (WLHIV) are at higher risk of having an adverse birth outcome, but the underlying mechanism(s) are unknown. We hypothesized that HIV-associated endothelial activation could adversely impact placental function and lead to impaired fetal growth or stillbirth. METHODS: We used stored samples from WLHIV and HIV-negative women who had enrolled during pregnancy in the observational Botswana Tshipidi cohort. Written informed consent was obtained from the participants. We measured plasma levels of markers of endothelial activation (soluble vascular adhesion molecul…

Distribution of bovine cysticercosis prevalence in the southeastern districts of Botswana from 2015 to 2016.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bovine cysticercosis is defined as a foodborne parasitic zoonotic disease of cattle caused by the larval stage of the human tapeworm Taenia saginata. In Botswana, bovine cysticercosis has inflicted major economic consequences on the beef industry due to downgrading, condemnation, or treatment of infected carcasses. Thus, in this study, we aim to (1) estimate the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in Botswana's southeastern districts, (2) describe the distribution of bovine cysticercosis through geospatial mapping, and (3) investigate the effect of seasonality on bovine cyst…

Recurrent vaginal epithelioid leiomyosarcoma; a case report from Botswana and review of the literature.

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma is a rare gynecological malignancy. The clinical presentation is a benign looking well circumscribed mobile mass which might however occasionally present with distant metastases. Post treatment recurrence is common, and the clinical course is often unpredictable. Primary surgical management plus radiotherapy is the commonly practiced treatment of choice. We report a case of primary vaginal epithelioid leiomyosarcoma that recurred twice after local surgical resection. The patient subsequently underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophore
