Early patterning of neural crest cells (NCCs) in the craniofacial primordium is important for subsequent development of proper craniofacial structures. However, because of the complexity of the environment of developing tissues, surveying the early specification and patterning of NCCs is difficult. In this study, we develop a simplified in vitro 3D model using human pluripotent stem cells to analyze the early stages of facial development. In this model, cranial NCC-like cells spontaneously differentiate from neural plate border-like cells into maxillary arch-like mesenchyme after a long-term c

Fourth branchial cleft anomalies are rare head and neck congenital lesions seen in children. They present as a neck inflammatory mass and arise essentially on the left side of the neck. We report the case of a 7-month-old female with a mass of the neck associated with respiratory distress. The mass was diagnosed as an incomplete fourth branchial cleft fistula. Surgical revision of the neck abscess from an external approach and plasma coblation of the orifice in the pyriform fossa by an endoscopic approach were performed.

OBJECTIVES: To describe and assess a novel technique of complete endoscopic combined transcervical-transoral fistulectomy (ECCOF) in the management of pediatric complete second branchial cleft (BC) fistula tracts (SBCFTs).
METHODS: A prospective single-center consecutive case series of SBCFTs was designed. Course and angles of inclination of the tract towards the pharyngeal wall were assessed using CT fistulography. Complete endoscopic fistulectomy was performed using three levels of dissection via ECCOF. Technique, advantages, complications and recurrences were assessed.
RESULTS: Five child

Objective:To explore the adjacent anatomic relationship and classification of Work Ⅰ congenital first branchial cleft anomaly(CFBCA) in order to guide clinical practice. Method:The data of 48 cases of Work Ⅰ CFBCA with complete data were analyzed retrospectively. Result:All 48 lesions were completely resected. 48 sides(100.0%) were anatomically preserved facial nerve, partial parotidectomy was performed on 33 sides(68.8%), superficial lobe+deep lobe partial parotidectomy was performed on 9 sides(18.8%), and 6 sides(12.5%) was not performed parotidectomy. We describe a rare case of a fourth branchial cleft cyst that had no identifiable tract. The patient was a 23-year-old man who presented with recurring neck abscesses. After six similar episodes, computed tomography finally demonstrated that the most recent abscess had extended into the thyroid gland, a finding that led to the correct diagnosis. Extensive surgical extirpation of the cyst with an adjacent neck dissection was performed, and the patient remained symptom-free at 25 months of follow-up. The occurrence of a fourth branchial cleft cyst with no clear tract presents a surgical dilemma,

Branchial anomalies are a consequence of abnormal development of the branchial apparatus during embryogenesis. Here, a pediatric case with a right-sided fourth branchial cyst that was discovered on fetal ultrasound scanning (US) is presented. The embryological basis for the occurrence of this cyst and definitive surgical management are discussed.

Morphology and pathological mechanism of congenital anomalies of the first and second branchial arch and cleft were discussed. Present views on heredity of those malformations have been also presented. Five examples of familial occurrence of microtia and cleft are described.

Inspection of the dorsal end of fish gills reveals an impressive set of nerve trunks, connecting the gills to the brain. These trunks are branches of cranial nerves VII (the facial) and especially IX (the glossopharyngeal) and X (the vagus). The nerve trunks carry a variety of nervous pathways to and from the gills. A substantial fraction of the nerves running in the branchial trunks carry afferent (sensory) information from receptors within the gills. There are also efferent (motor) pathways, which control muscles within the gills, blood flow patterns and possibly secretory functions. Underta
