A Benign Rare Lesion of the Breast: Giant Epidermal Inclusion Cyst.

An epidermal inclusion cyst can be seen at any location. Epidermal cysts are commonly found on the scalp, face, trunk, neck, and extremities. They are rarely seen in the breast parenchyma. These benign lesions are important in that they may undergo neoplastic differentiation, although very rarely. Epidermoid cysts usually develop as a result of the implantation of superficial epidermal tissue into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue after trauma or surgical procedures. In this study, a 37-year-old female patient who underwent a histopathological examination that showed a 10-cm epidermal cyst wit

Metastatic breast carcinoma discovered in a dentigerous cyst - a case report.

This paper reports a patient with a history of breast cancer, who presented with altered sensation to the right lower lip and chin. An orthopantomogram showed a probable dentigerous cyst associated with an unerupted lower wisdom tooth, which was closely related to the inferior dental canal. The tooth and cyst were enucleated under general anaesthesia. The subsequent histopathology report concluded that the cyst contained metastatic adenocarcinoma from a primary breast tumour.

Breast cyst simulating metastases on iodine-131 imaging in thyroid carcinoma.

False-positive radioiodine uptake has been reported in many organ systems. We describe a female patient who had mixed papillary and follicular thyroid carcinoma, and on radioiodine total-body imaging demonstrated focal, lower-right chest uptake. Special prone imaging with the right breast dependent proved that the uptake was inside the right breast. Review of a recent breast ultrasound and mammograms showed this uptake to correspond to a large breast cyst. It is known that 131I breast uptake may be functional within the mammary gland. In this patient, it was due to retention within the cyst af…

Quantification of prostate-specific antigen immunoreactivity in human breast cyst fluids.

The frequency of gross cystic breast disease in premenopausal women and its possible association with increased breast cancer risk emphasises the importance of investigations relating to breast cyst fluid composition. In order to contribute to a better analysis of this medium, we have measured the presence of prostate-specific antigen immuno-reactivity in sixty-four human breast cyst fluids. Data analyses show that 35% of samples presented a level of this antigen < 0.05 micrograms/L, whereas 42 out of 64 cysts show a significant increase in the mean value of metabolically active apocrine cysts…

Quantification and molecular analysis of cathepsin D in breast cyst fluids.

Cyst fluids from 55 premenopausal women with gross cystic breast disease were classified by K+/Na+ ratio: 19 with ratio over 1 (type I) and 36 with ratio less than 1 (type II). Immunoradiometric assay of cathepsin D in both types of cyst fluids revealed the presence of large amounts of this proteinase. The average concentration of cathepsin D in type I cyst fluids was 63.3 nmol/l, which was significantly higher than that corresponding to type II cyst fluids (35.1 nmol/l). Immunoprecipitation analysis of intracystic cathepsin D demonstrated that this protein was present as the 52 kD non-process

Steroid and cation correlations in human breast cyst fluid: preliminary findings.

Gross cystic disease (GCD) of the breast imparts a minimal risk for the development of breast cancer. Relative to serum, breast cyst fluid (BCF) in patients with GCD is highly concentrated in androgens, estrogens, certain enzymes, and bioactive polypeptides. In addition, the cations, sodium and potassium, vary markedly and inversely in BCF. We have focused on the levels of estriol-3-sulfate (E3S), which are several orders of magnitude greater in BCF than in blood. In this preliminary study, about 55 specimens of BCF were analyzed for E3S, its possible precursors, estrone sulfate (E1S) and dehy…

Cathepsin D and epidermal growth factor in human breast cyst fluid.

Cathespin D (Cath D) is a proteolytic enzyme secreted by human breast cancer cells with a growth promoting activity in vitro. In the present study, we measured Cath D and Epidermal Growth Factor/alpha Transforming Growth Factor (EGF/alpha-TGF) concentrations in the breast cyst fluid (BCF) of 43 patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. Both Cath D (median 2.45 pmoles mg-1 protein; range 0-4.84 vs 0.98 pmoles mg-1 protein; range 0-3.11) and EGF/alpha-TGF (28.71 ng mg-1 protein; range 7.05-50.63 vs 10.83 ng mg-1 protein; range 0.06-30.55) levels were higher in BCF of apocrine than flatte…

Further characterization of the light breast cyst fluid protein, GCDFP-15.

A light protein of breast cyst fluid from women with gross cystic disease, termed GCDFP-15 in the literature, has been investigated. This light protein was purified by preparative electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel. Its isoelectric point has been determined as 3.75 and its molecular weight has been estimated at 17 400. The light protein was a glycoprotein containing about 163 amino acid residues; the glucidic fraction corresponded to 11% of the molecular weight. The N-terminal amino acid was blocked and the C-terminal amino acid was determined as valine. Antisera rais…

Prostate specific antigen molecular forms in breast cyst fluid and serum of women with fibrocystic breast disease.

We have analyzed matched serum and breast cyst fluid samples for total PSA from 148 patients with fibrocystic breast disease. We have also determined the molecular forms of PSA (free PSA and PSA bound to alpha1-antichymotrypsin) in 78 breast cyst fluid samples. We found that total PSA can be detected in all cyst fluids and in about 75% of female sera. The median total PSA concentration in breast cyst fluid (bcf) is about 30 times higher than the median in the corresponding sera. Breast cyst fluid and serum PSA are not correlated with each other. Total serum PSA is inversely associated with pat…

Fibrocystic breast disease: the significance of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin and other polypeptides in breast cyst fluid.

Breast cyst fluids from 118 women, aged 29 to 69 years, were analyzed by radioimmunoassays for beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Blood was drawn at the same time in many cases to compare hormonal levels in serum with those in the breast cyst fluids (BCF). The levels of beta-hCG in BCF were relatively high, with a mean (+/- standard error of the mean [SEM]) of 58.9 +/- 16.8 mIU/ml; serum levels of beta-hCG were negligible. LH and TSH also were elevated in BCF compare…

Organochlorine compounds (DDE and PCB) in plasma and breast cyst fluid of women with benign breast disease.

The organochlorines, dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) are pervasive environmental contaminants. Results from previous studies have been conflicting regarding the relationship between the internal dose of these organochlorine residues and breast cancer risk. To determine whether these compounds are present in breast cyst fluids and whether cyst fluid and plasma concentrations are correlated, we analyzed organochlorines in paired cyst fluid and plasma samples from 24 subjects using gas chromatography and electron capture detection. All but one of the women had…

The relationship of cyst type to risk factors for breast cancer and the subsequent development of breast cancer in patients with breast cystic disease.

The frequency of epithelial hyperplasia and papillary apocrine change in patients with palpable breast cysts lined by either apocrine or flattened epithelium has been compared. Hyperplasia of any degree, severe hyperplasia with or without atypia and papillary apocrine change were all seen significantly more frequently in patients with clinically palpable apocrine cysts. Twelve patients were identified with breast cancer with a history of cyst aspiration, in whom all cysts aspirated could be classified as apocrine or flattened on the basis of cytology or electrolyte composition of cyst fluid. E…

Hydatid Cyst of the Breast: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Breast is a rare location for hydatid cysts, even in endemic regions such as the Middle East. They can mimic more common breast pathologies, such as simple cysts, fibroadenomas, or tumors. So, they warrant careful consideration in any patient with a breast lump. Routine evaluations, such as physical examination, ultrasound, and mammography, rarely identify them as the underlying cause because of the similarity of the manifestations. Definitive diagnosis is usually made intraoperatively, when surgeons identify daughter cysts or the characteristic laminated membrane, or postoperatively through p

[Use of information technologies to detect a breast cyst area on mammograms].

OBJECTIVE: To use the mammographic image processing algorithm developed by the authors in order to identify a cyst area. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The investigations used statistical methods for processing the mammographic films in women with different breast abnormalities, which were taken in the mammography room, Departmental Hospital at the Murom Station, OAO "RZhD", in the first half of 2012. Taking into account the incidence of breast cysts and difficulty in its detection, the authors proposed a specially oriented algorithm to identify a cyst area. It allowed one to assert with a higher degr…

[The intracystic concentration of MCA in the fluid from large breast cysts].

75 patients with breast gross cystic disease and no cancer have been included in the study. For each patients serous and intracystic concentrations of MCA have been measured. The aim of the study is to assess whether if a relation between intracystic concentration of the marker and resistance and capability of cellular reproduction exists (confirmed by the release of the cyst). The analysis of intracystic values shows that synthesis of MCA is an intrinsic peculiarity of cytologic kind. It is apparently independent from inflammatory or hemorrhagic contemporary processes.

Breast cysts and solid lesions: the role of fine-needle aspiration.

Breast cyst aspiration and fine-needle or needle-core biopsy of palpable and nonpalpable breast masses can be cost-effective and in some situations provide instant resolution of cystic masses. The limitations of the techniques must be known if the benefits are to be exploited. New evaluations on cyst fluid demonstrating proteins (common to breast cancer) have been demonstrated, as well as assessment of electrolyte ratios in fluid. These may give additional information regarding cyst character and potential risks for breast cancer. Physicians involved in the treatment of breast disease must be …

Beta-endorphin, steroids, and prolactin. Immunoassay in breast cysts and blood.

Circulating levels and cyst fluid concentrations of beta-endorphin (beta-EP), estradiol, progesterone, and prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassays in 10 premenopausal women with gross breast cysts. In addition, aspirates and frozen tissue sections from cystic lesions were investigated immunocytochemically for a possible beta-EP production. Epithelia of dilated ducts, smaller cysts, and hyperplastic lesions without atypia showed a strong positive reaction in the cytoplasm. In apocrine metaplasia, this staining was concentrated in the apical region. The staining intensity in atypical hyperp…

Levels of androgen conjugates and oestrone sulphate in patients with breast cysts.

Plasma and cyst fluid were obtained from patients with palpable breast cysts and analysed for androgen conjugates and oestrone sulphate content by radioimmunoassay. Concentrations of androgen conjugates in cyst fluids varied from 15.6 to 475.5 mumols/l. These levels were much greater than those in plasma (1.3-5.2 mumols/l) and there was no association between values in cyst aspirates and plasmas obtained from the same individuals. Levels of oestrone sulphate in breast cyst fluids (1.5-744.0 nmol/l) were also generally in excess of those in plasma (2.0-59.9 nmol/l) and again no relationship was…
