Biological costs and benefits of selective breeding for disease resistance using marker-assisted or field-based selective breeding in honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) breeders seek to enhance disease resistance by selecting for behavioral resistance traits such as hygienic behavior and Varroa-sensitive hygiene. However, traditional phenotypic assays for these traits are labor-intensive, limiting scalability. Antennal protein biomarkers correlated with these behaviors offer a promising tool for marker-assisted selection (MAS), potentially increasing phenotyping efficiency and accelerating genetic gains. This study evaluated the performance of honey bee colonies from 4 stocks: those selected using field-based phenotypic assays (F

Assessment of biometrics and stress indicators of the adult Village Weaver birds (Ploceus cucullatus) during breeding and post-breeding seasons in Jos, Nigeria.

In this era of climate change, some biological conservationists' concerns are based on seasonal studies that highlight how wild birds' physiological fitness are interconnected with the immediate environment to avoid population decline. We investigated how seasonal biometrics correlated to stress parameters of the adult Village Weavers (Ploceus cucullatus) during breeding and post-breeding seasons of the Weaver birds in Amurum Forest Reserve. Specifically, we explored the following objectives: (i) the seasonal number of birds captured; (ii) whether seasonal baseline corticosterone (CORT), packe…

Effects of melatonin implants on the reproductive performance and endocrine function of camel (Camelus dromedarius) bulls during the non-breeding and subsequent breeding seasons.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of melatonin implants on the reproductive performances and hormone levels of dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) bulls during the non-breeding and subsequent breeding seasons. Fourteen mature dromedary bulls were divided into a control group (n = 7) and a group that was implanted with melatonin (n = 7) twice, at the beginning of the study and 35 days later. The trial started on the 17th June and continued for 10 weeks during the non-breeding season. Reproductive performances of animals in the control and melatonin groups were evaluated weekly during the non…

Increased genetic gains in sheep, beef and dairy breeding programs from using female reproductive technologies combined with optimal contribution selection and genomic breeding values.

BACKGROUND: Female reproductive technologies such as multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) and juvenile in vitro embryo production and embryo transfer (JIVET) can boost rates of genetic gain but they can also increase rates of inbreeding. Inbreeding can be managed using the principles of optimal contribution selection (OCS), which maximizes genetic gain while placing a penalty on the rate of inbreeding. We evaluated the potential benefits and synergies that exist between genomic selection (GS) and reproductive technologies under OCS for sheep and cattle breeding programs. METHODS: Var…

Intensified Use of Reproductive Technologies and Reduced Dimensions of Breeding Schemes Put Genetic Diversity at Risk in Dairy Cattle Breeds.

In the management of dairy cattle breeds, two recent trends have arisen that pose potential threats to genetic diversity: the use of reproductive technologies (RT) and a reduction in the number of bulls in breeding schemes. The expected outcome of these changes, in terms of both genetic gain and genetic diversity, is not trivial to predict. Here, we simulated 15 breeding schemes similar to those carried out in large French dairy cattle breeds; breeding schemes differed with respect to their dimensions, the intensity of RT use, and the type of RT involved. We found that intensive use of RT resu…

A comparison of phenotypic traits related to trypanotolerance in five west african cattle breeds highlights the value of shorthorn taurine breeds.

BACKGROUND: Animal African Trypanosomosis particularly affects cattle and dramatically impairs livestock development in sub-Saharan Africa. African Zebu (AFZ) or European taurine breeds usually die of the disease in the absence of treatment, whereas West African taurine breeds (AFT), considered trypanotolerant, are able to control the pathogenic effects of trypanosomosis. Up to now, only one AFT breed, the longhorn N'Dama (NDA), has been largely studied and is considered as the reference trypanotolerant breed. Shorthorn taurine trypanotolerance has never been properly assessed and compared to

Breeding decision in migratory population with stochastic and deterministic cost.

Breeding decisions in migratory animal populations involve a trade-off between returning to natal grounds and delaying reproduction. Partial migration, in which some individuals migrate while others remain resident, is common across species. Migrating individuals often face ecological challenges, such as predation and environmental unpredictability, imposing significant breeding costs that affect their reproductive choices. We developed a discrete-time population model that considers both migration and the option to skip breeding. Our analysis of a deterministic model with constant breeding co…

Genomic Insights into Winter Wheat Breeding for Severely Cold Climates.

Wheat is one of the world's most important crops, cultivated across diverse ecogeographic zones on more than ~245 million hectares annually. … latively mild winters, while vast temperate zones with extremely cold winters rely on spring wheat. Breeding has traditionally targeted the vernalization-C-repeat Binding Factor (VRN-CBF) pathway, which confers tolerance to moderately severe winters but is insufficient for extreme cold, implying the need for additional layers of adaptive mechanisms. Using …

Current and Emerging Advanced Techniques for Breeding Donkeys and Mules.

Donkeys and mules have historically played an important role in agriculture and are now gaining recognition for their contributions to animal conservation, milk production, tourism, and equid-assisted services. However, their distinctive reproductive challenges pose obstacles to breeding management. As a result, the application of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) could help address these challenges, enhancing their roles in both traditional and emerging industries. This review examines the current and emerging in vitro techniques for breeding donkeys and mules. Key methodologies such …

Breeding for thermotolerance in dairy cattle: Production versus fertility traits.

The decline in production of milk and its components has been extensively studied as an indicator of heat tolerance for genetic evaluations. However, the antagonistic relationship between high production and functionality raises questions about the suitability of using productive traits as indicators of heat tolerance. This study aimed to estimate changes in the relationship between production and fertility under thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS) conditions, to define breeding strategies that enhance adaptation to high heat loads while maintaining both productivity and functionality. The…

Resource availability alters breeding strategies in a small mammal community.

Following a resource pulse, animals may finance reproduction by consuming concurrently available resources (income breeding) or by storing resources for future reproduction (capital breeding). Understanding how these reproductive strategies are used is important for determining the ecological mechanisms that structure timing of reproduction and that drive interannual population fluctuations in animals. We gathered a reproductive dataset for five small mammal species over a 12-year period in Northeastern USA during which six masting events of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and eastern hemlo…

Selection and direct biomarkers of reproductive capacity of breeding boars.

Efficient management of pig reproduction is paramount for the sustainability and productivity of the global pork industry. Modern artificial insemination (AI) breeding programs have greatly benefited from the integration of advanced selection methods and biomarkers to enhance the reproductive performance of boars. While traditional selection methods have relied soley on boar phenotype, such as growth rate and conformation, modern pig breeding has shifted more and more toward molecular and genetic tools, which are still complemented by phenotypic traits. These methods encompass genomics, transc…

Drop dead! Female mate avoidance in an explosively breeding frog.

Males' and females' reproductive strategies may differ, potentially leading to sexual conflict. Increased efforts by males (harassment, forced copulation, intimidation) to gain access to females could even negatively affect female survival and thus lead to reproductive failure for both individuals. In anurans, a higher mortality risk of mating females has been reported in explosive breeding species. During these mating events, several males cling to a female, which are mostly unable to get rid of the unwanted males. This can lead to the female's death. From the literature, it seems that female…
