Scald Burns From Hair Braiding.

Only one previous case report has described scald burns secondary to hair braiding in pediatric patients. The present case study is the largest to date of scald burns as a result of hair braiding in children and adults. Charts of all 1609 female patients seen at a single burn center from 2008 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients with scald burns attributed to hair braiding. Demographics, injury severity, injury patterns, and complications were analyzed. Twenty-six patients (1.6%) had scald burns secondary to hair braiding with median TBSA 3%. Eighty-five percent of patien…

[Burns and scalds in children].

BACKGROUND: Since pediatric emergencies and burn injuries are rare in prehospital emergency medicine, emergency teams can hardly develop routine in emergency care. OBJECTIVES: How to effectively treat burn injuries and avoid common errors? MATERIALS AND METHODS: A simple and severity-based therapy concept based on the current literature using the example of a case report is presented. RESULTS: About 80% of burns and scalds in children are not severe cases-in these patients an effective analgesia by intranasal administration is important and further invasive treatments are generally not nece…

Wischnewski spots in fatal burns.

The occurrence of Wischnewski spots in fatal hypothermia has been considered an important indicator of reduced core temperatures, its incidence varying between 40 and 100%. Though many human and animal studies have been conducted to study this phenomenon, the underlying mechanisms contributing to the formation of Wischnewski spots are still not clearly understood. They have been largely reported in human deaths occurring from exposure to freezing temperatures. This is the first reported case of Wischnewski spots observed in a case of fatal burns.

Burns treatment in ancient times.

Discovery of fire at the dawn of prehistoric time brought not only the benefits to human beings offering the light and heat, but also misfortune due to burns; and that was the beginning of burns treatment. Egyptian doctors made medicines from plants, animal products and minerals, which they combined with magic and religious procedures. The earliest records described burns dressings with milk from mothers of male babies. Goddess Isis was called upon to help. Some remedies and procedures proved so successful that their application continued for centuries. The Edwin Smith papyrus (1500 BC) mentio…

Epilepsy and full-thickness burns.

This paper presents various aspects of severe burns involving epileptic patients, who may suffer dramatic accidents during seizure attacks. Epileptics may fall onto an open fire or hot surface (e.g. a kitchen range) and they may upset containers full of boiling liquids, suffering deep burns and scalds. In our experience in this field, the most commonly affected body areas are the face and hands, the trunk, and the lower limbs. All such injuries are full-thickness burns, owing to the very long contact of the skin surface with the lesional agent. Three cases are presented of epileptics with seve…

Abdominal complications after severe burns.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal catastrophe in the severely burned patient without abdominal injury has been described. We perceived an alarming recent incidence of this complication in our burn center, both during acute resuscitation and later in the hospital course. We sought to define incidence, outcomes, and associated factors, such as excessive resuscitation volume and treatment issues. STUDY DESIGN: We examined all severely burned military and civilian patients with abdominal pathology between March 2003 and February 2008. Data included age, gender, total body surface area burn, inhalation injury

The management of eyelid burns.

Eyelid involvement is common in facial burns. Ocular sequelae, including corneal ulceration, are usually preventable and secondary to the development of eyelid deformities, exposure keratopathy, and rarely, orbital compartment syndrome. Early ophthalmic review and prophylactic ocular lubrication is mandatory in burns involving the eyelids. Early surgical intervention, often requiring repeat procedures, is indicated if eyelid retraction causing corneal exposure occurs. Permanent visual impairment is rare with such prompt management. No binding aphorisms exist regarding the tissue used for eyeli…

Carpal tunnel syndrome following burns.

The commonest cause of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply narrower in some people than in others. The development of CTS due to various burn causes has never been reported. This study describes some demographic features of all reported CTS cases following different types of burn in patients admitted to our burns centre in the USA. A retrospective case study was carried out to identify CTS following different types of burns among the patients admitted between January 2001 and January 2006. A descriptive data analysis was carried out to obse…

Topical management of facial burns.

The face is the central point of the physical features of the human being. It transmits expressions and emotions, communicates feelings and allows for individual identity. It contains complex musculature and a pliable and unique skin envelope that reacts to the environment through a vast network of nerve endings. The face hosts vital areas that make phonation, feeding, and vision possible. Facial burns disrupt these anatomical and functional structures creating pain, deformity, swelling, and contractures that may lead to lasting physical and psychological sequelae. The management of facial bur…

The treatment of hand burns.

In more than 80% of all burns, the hand is involved. Even if a burned hand does not play a major role for the survival of a patient, its function and aesthetic appearance are of utmost importance for the re-integration into society and professional life. Adequate treatment demands a number of major decisions: necessity of an escharotomy in the early post-traumatic phase, the timing of surgery and the type of wound coverage, as well as immobilization and rehabilitation. Rapid wound closure is of utmost importance, but infection control and the preservation of active and passive motion are also …

The epidemiology of intentional burns.

We sought to present the epidemiology of intentional burns, both deliberate self-inflicted burns and assault burns. Patient records from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Burn Center were reviewed retrospectively. Information pertaining to demographic and injury characteristics were obtained. Ninety-six patients with intentional burns were identified. Patients sustaining intentional burn injury had larger mean TBSA burned (26.1% vs 13.8%), longer mean hospital length of stay (19.9 days vs 13.2 days), higher incidence of inhalational injury (20.8% vs 8.7%), higher rate of mortality (20.0%…

[Indoor electric burns in children].

BACKGROUND: Electric burns are serious public health problems that comprise 3.5% of the burns that refer to the hospital. By biting and sucking the electric cords, mouth and lip burns occur in the children. The mortality rate is 90% in the children who had cardiac arrest before coming to the hospital. In this study, the electric burns that were followed-up in our clinic were reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four cases with electric burns followed-up in our clinic between September 2002 February 2003; were assessed. The cases were called back to control one and six months after the burn inciden…

[Clinical aspects of corneal burns].

Clinical aspects and prognosis of corneal burns mainly depend on the agent responsible for the trauma. The most severe burns are caustic burns, which should be classified as burns caused by basic agents, associated with deep and prolonged injuries, and burns caused by acidic agents, associated with more superficial injuries. At the acute stage, caustic burns induce epithelial defects, corneal edema, and ischemic necrosis of the limbus, conjunctiva, iris and ciliary body. At the early stage, reepithelialization occurs and is often associated with corneal vascularization and stromal infiltrates,…

[Chemical burns to the eye].

BACKGROUND: Chemical injuries to the eye represent a significant fraction of ocular trauma requiring immediate treatment. Severe injuries might lead to serious visual impairment. This study reviews the frequency, cause, and results of treatment of all cases of chemical eye injuries in patients presenting in the section for ophthalmology at St. Olav University Hospital over a three-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Records of all patients presenting with ocular burns over the 1993 through 1995 period. The records were examined to extract information about age, sex, extent of injury, chemical …

Analgesia for trauma and burns.

This article has described the physiologic impact of trauma- and burn-related pain as well as the effect of a clinician's choice of analgesic method, using the specific example of regional analgesia for pain caused by chest trauma. It has been observed that trauma exerts a holistic influence upon the organism, marshalling reflexes, multi-system physiologic stress responses, and psychologic responses--some adaptive and others maladaptive. There is reason to consider that timely analgesia can intervene in this dynamic process and interdict the establishment of a debilitated state. A key finding

Pseudomonas aeruginosa septicaemia in burns.

Out of 1415 patients treated as inpatients at Al-Babtain Center for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Ibn Sina Hospital, Kuwait spanning over a period of 6 years from June 1992 to June 1998, 102 developed clinically and microbiologically proven septicaemia. Only 15 out of them had either single or multiple episodes of septicaemia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and were studied during their stay in the hospital. Five of them were males and 10 females, with a mean age of 26 years (range 3-51 years) and mean total body surface area of burns (TBSA) of 66% (range 25-90%). All of them had flame burns and re…

Pediatric electrical burns: management strategies.

The purpose of the present study was to analyse the course of patients hospitalised with electrical burn wounds in the past 25 years at a major children's hospital in the United States in order to devise safe and cost effective management strategies for these patients. The study was a retrospective chart review of patients with electrical injuries admitted to the hospital between 1971 and 1995. We identified 127 children who were included in the study. Injuries resulted from biting an electrical cord (oral injury) (n = 48), placing an object into an electrical socket (outlet injury) (n = 33),

Oral commissure burns in children.

Electrical burns of the mouth are relatively common in young children. Early intervention to prevent complications remains controversial. A chart review was conducted of 24 patients with oral commissure burns who were treated at the University of Iowa from 1975 to 1988. All of these patients were treated conservatively without splinting or early surgery. Only one patient underwent oral splinting before receiving care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. While under our care, no patients suffered significant hemorrhage at eschar separation. Commissuroplasty and/or reconstructive lip…
