Evaluation of an ELISA for combined measurement of CAA and CCA in schistosomiasis mansoni.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed for combined measurement of schistosome circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and circulating cathodic antigen (CCA). Monoclonal antibodies against CAA and CCA were used as coating and as fluorescein-labeled detecting antibodies in a FITC-anti-FITC system. Airway Management Through a Facial Defect Resulting From Noma (Orofacial Gangrene): A Case Report.

At a rural district hospital in Burundi, a 3-year-old severely malnourished girl with Noma presented to the operating room for placement of a gastrostomy tube. The child had a large left-sided facial defect as well as trismus. After induction of general anesthesia, the anesthesia provider was unable to open her mouth. Given that the hospital has no fiberoptic bronchoscope, direct laryngoscopy and intubation were performed directly through her facial defect. After securing the airway, the surgery proceeded without difficulty.

Much controversy exists about the reliability of cheap implants, often the only ones affordable in low income countries. Between August 1, 2021, and August 1, 2023, 110 patients were treated with a reamed unlocked 316L stainless steel Küntscher nail for a fracture of the femoral shaft in Mutoyi Hospital, Mutoyi (Gitega), Burundi. Not a single breakage occurred. Minimal bending (9°) without the need of a reoperation occurred in 2 cases (1,8%). Migration necessitated a small reintervention for a single nail (0,9%).

Gastric ulcer in Zaria, Nigeria.

In 1971 to 1977, 34 patients were operated for gastric ulcer at Zaria in the Savannah region of Northern Nigeria. The most frequent operation (35%) was for perforation. The frequency of perforation is similar to Ibadan's but smaller than Dakar's. Compared with Ibadan and Burundi, there are fewer women, more Type I ulcers and more frequent haemorrhages. There were three giant lesser curvature ulcers. Only a few combined duodenal and gastric ulcers were seen suggesting that gastric stasis is not the immediate factor in the production of gastric ulcer in this region.

Rapid regional mobile laboratory response and genomic monkeypox virus (MPXV) surveillance in seven East African Community partner states, August 2024: preparedness activities for the ongoing outbreak.

The East African Community (EAC) is experiencing an unprecedented, emerging mpox outbreak since July 2024 in five of eight partner states. We highlight rapid regional response measures, initiated August 2024 coordinated by EAC: field deployment of six mobile laboratories in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan to high-risk areas, donation of one mobile laboratory to Democratic Republic of the Congo and genomic monkeypox virus (MPXV) surveillance support. These interventions aim to limit local mpox spread and support international containment.
