First-trimester sonographic diagnosis of holoprosencephaly: value of the "butterfly" sign.

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of choroid plexus dysmorphology as a screening tool for the first-trimester sonographic diagnosis of holoprosencephaly in a high-risk population. METHODS: A total of 378 consecutive pregnancies undergoing chorionic villus sampling between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation were scanned before the procedure, following the recommendations of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (London, England). A cross-sectional view of the fetal brain, including the visualization of both choroid plexuses (the "butterfly" sign), was obtained in all cases. RESULTS: There were 3 cases in which t

Inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty (Eavey technique) modified for adults.

INTRODUCTION: Popular myringoplasty techniques include either an underlay or an onlay approach using tissues such as temporalis fascia or perichondrium as grafts. In 1998, Eavey described an inlay tympanoplasty technique in children using a cartilage graft which resembled butterfly wings. This technique was effective for closure of tympanic membrane perforations, while being more rapid for the surgeon and more comfortable for the patient. The aim of this study was to describe our results with modification of this technique in adults under local anesthesia. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Cartilage butt

Hydrogen-Free APCVD Synthesis of Heterophase WSe2 Nano-Butterflies for Room Temperature NO2 Detection: Experimental and Computational Insights.

We report a scalable hydrogen-free synthesis of heterophase 2H/1T' WSe2-based gas sensor for ultrasensitive room temperature NO2 detection. Moving beyond conventional defect engineering, this work leverages deliberate phase and morphological synergies to overcome traditional kinetic trade-offs in 2D material-based sensors. Unlike conventional 3D structures, this open hierarchical nano-butterfly-like morphology prevents van der Waals restacking and maximizes exposed active edge sites for rapid gas diffusion. Quantitative phase engineering yielding an optimized surface of kinetically trapped 1T'

Vermilion and cinnabar are involved in ommochrome pigment biosynthesis in eyes but not wings of Bicyclus anynana butterflies.

If the same pigment is found in different tissues in a body, it is natural to assume that the same metabolic pathways are deployed similarly in each tissue. Here we show that this is not the case for ommochromes, the red and orange pigments found in the eyes and wings of butterflies. We tested the expression and function of vermilion and cinnabar, two known fly genes in the ommochrome pathway, in the development of pigments in the eyes and in the wings of Bicyclus anynana butterflies, both traits having reddish/orange pigments. By using fluorescent in-situ hybridization (HCR3.0) we localized t…

Anti-aphrodisiac compounds of male butterflies increase the risk of egg parasitoid attack by inducing plant synomone production.

During mating in many butterfly species, males transfer spermatophores that contain anti-aphrodisiacs to females that repel conspecific male … days after butterfly egg deposition. Elicitor activity was present in ARG secretion of mated female butterflies, whereas the secretion of virgin females was inactive. Pieris rapae used a mixture of methyl salicylate (MeSA) and indole as an anti-aphrodisiac. We detected traces of both anti-aphrodisiacal compounds in the ARG secretion of mated female P. rapae, …

The crescent cross-section and dichotomous chitin structure make the proboscis of butterflies and moths a hydraulic spring.

The proboscis of butterflies and moths is made of two C-shaped tubular strands, each with a crescent cross-section. Together, they form a food canal for fluid uptake. Each strand is sealed at the free end and blood is pumped in at the head. The accepted scenario for proboscis uncoiling assumes that intrinsic muscles deform the proboscis walls like fingers pressing a bicycle tire, decreasing the cross-sectional area and displacing blood that pushes the external walls outward, as does the air in the tire. This scenario requires the external walls of the strands to be softer than the food canal w…

[Epidemic outbreaks of dermatitis caused by butterflies of the genus Hylesia (Lepidoptera: Hemileucidae) in São Paulo State, Brazil].

Epidemic outbreaks of dermatitis caused by Hylesia sp which occurred in the coastal region of the State of S. Paulo during the period of December 1989 to December 1991 are confirmed. The incident assumed its greatest intensity in Bertioga, in Santos County, where 612 cases were registered. The outbreak also affected 12 other counties in that region and it was estimated that hundred of affected persons sought the Local Health Service Care. The majority presented with erythematous and prutiginous lesions and papula which lasted 7 to 14 days on average. Treatment consisted of systemic administrat

Proteomic analysis of dimorphic sperm in the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae.

Sperm dimorphism, the production of two distinct sperm morphs by a single male, is a widespread but enigmatic reproductive phenomenon. In Lepidoptera, fertilizing eupyrene sperm coexist with anucleate apyrene sperm, which cannot fertilize eggs but are nevertheless required for successful reproduction. Despite the prevalence and presumed adaptive significance of sperm dimorphism, the molecular basis of this trait remains limited. Here, we characterize the proteome of dimorphic sperm in the Cabbage White butterfly, Pieris rapae, an emerging model for sexual selection and postcopulatory interacti

Endoscopic Butterfly Myringoplasty: Comparison of Tragal Cartilage Graft and Dermal Allograft.

OBJECTIVES: Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is a common reason for visits to otolaryngology clinics. For decades, various surgical methods and grafts have been employed to treat TMP. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of tragal cartilage grafts (TCG) and dermal allografts (DAG) in myringoplasty for treating TMP. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 80 patients who underwent endoscopic butterfly inlay myringoplasty between 2019 and 2022. The patients were divided into two groups based on the graft material used: TCG (n = 40) and DAG (n = 40). We compared preoperative and postoperativ

Butterfly Wings Effect on High Resolution Manometry in A Patient with Esophageal Achalasia.

A 57-year-old man presented with dysphagia in solids and liquids deteriorating in the last months and weight loss of 3 kg. A thoracic CT revealed a limit dilatation of the lower esophagus with food residue. An upper endoscopy was performed revealing bubble content and a contraction of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). A barium esophagogram demonstrated deceleration of esophageal emptying and a bird beak sign indicative of esophageal achalasia (Figure A). High resolution esophageal manometry was performed to evaluate the subtype of achalasia. The catheter could not be intubated into the sto

Choroidal neovascularization associated with butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy - a case report.

The pattern dystrophies (PDs) are a group of primarily autosomal dominant inherited macular diseases that cause the deposition of lipofuscin in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and may lead to significant vision loss in later life. Patients can develop choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and/ or geographic atrophy (GA) and for this reason they are often misdiagnosed as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We presented a case of a 66-year-old patient complaining of vision loss in the right eye (RE) for 8 months. At the initial examination, his best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.6 in th

A rare incidental finding of an isolated S1 butterfly vertebra: A case report.

Butterfly vertebra is an uncommon type of vertebral anomaly (sometimes referred to as a sagittal cleft vertebra or an anterior rachischisis) caused by persistent notochordal tissue. Butterfly vertebrae of S1, which is rarer anomaly compared to thoraco-lumbar region, may be associated with syndromic causes and usually asymptomatic with a funnel shaped defect seen in imaging which can later give rise to disk problems, facet joint degeneration and chronic low back pain. We here share a case of 35-year female presented with intermittent low back pain diagnosed with S1 butterfly vertebrae as an inc

Thoracolumbar kyphoscoliotic deformity with neurological impairment secondary to a butterfly vertebra in an adult.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To describe a rare case of thoracolumbar kyphoscoliosis secondary to a butterfly vertebra in an adult, and its surgical correction technique. BACKGROUND: Kyphoscoliosis secondary to an isolated butterfly vertebra is rare and its management can be very challenging. METHODS: We report the case of a 39-year-old male, complaining of chronic middle and low back pain with unsteady gait and altered sensation of lower extremities. Full spine anteroposterior and lateral X-rays revealed a thoracolumbar kyphosis with an angulation of 60° between T10 and T12, with

Dichotomy of Dosage Compensation along the Neo Z Chromosome of the Monarch Butterfly.

Mechanisms of sex chromosome dosage compensation (SCDC) differ strikingly among animals. In Drosophila flies, chromosome-wide transcription is doubled from the single X chromosome in hemizygous (XY) males, whereas in Caenorhabditis nematodes, expression is halved for both X copies in homozygous (XX) females [1, 2]. Unlike other female-heterogametic (WZ female and ZZ male) animals, moths and butterflies exhibit sex chromosome dosage compensation patterns typically seen only in male-heterogametic species [3]. The monarch butterfly carries a newly derived Z chromosome segment that arose from an a…

Stabilization and Transfer of the Transient [Mes*P4](-) Butterfly Anion Using BPh3.

The transient bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutane anion, generated from white phosphorus (P4) and Mes*Li (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3C6H2), can be trapped by BPh3 in THF. This Lewis acid stabilized anion can be used as an [RP4](-) transfer agent, reacting cleanly with neutral Lewis acids (B(C6F5)3, BH3, and W(CO)5) to afford unique singly and doubly coordinated butterfly anions, and with the trityl cation to form a neutral, nonsymmetrical, all-carbon-substituted P4  derivative. This reaction path enables a simple, stepwise functionalization of white phosphorus.

Transcaval repair of sinus venosus defect. Using a butterfly-shaped patch.

We describe an operative technique used in 30 patients from 1982 to 1995, in which sinus venosus atrial septal defect with anomalous pulmonary venous connection is repaired through longitudinal incision confined to the vena cava. A single oval patch is folded like the wings of a butterfly: the posterior wing is used to separate superior vena caval and pulmonary venous blood, and the anterior wing is used to enlarge the terminal cava. This approach avoids both sinus node dysfunction and superior vena caval or pulmonary venous obstruction. Operative findings suggest that the sinus venosus defect
