Disseminated candidiasis on FDG-PET/CT.

Disseminated candidiasis presents a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with hematological malignancies like leukemia. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) is a crucial imaging modality in oncology and infection, outperforming conventional imaging in diagnosing and managing fungal infections, especially in cases of fever of unknown origin. We present a compelling case of a young leukemia patient with persistent fever, demonstrating FDG-avid lesions in various organs, including the…

Promising immunotherapeutic targets for treating candidiasis.

In the last twenty years, there has been a significant increase in invasive fungal infections, which has corresponded with the expanding pop … ents and challenges in macromolecular drugs to identify new targets for the effective management of candidiasis.

Limosilactobacillus fermentum KBL674 Alleviates Vaginal Candidiasis.

Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the primary etiologic agent of vaginal candidiasis. Lactobacillus species are predominant in the vaginal microbiome; they inhibit the development of vaginal candidiasis by producing antimicrobial agents, such as lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. In this study, we investigated the effects of Limosilactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum) KBL674 in a mouse model of vaginal candidiasis. L. fermentum KBL674 inhibited C. albicans hyphal growth. Moreover, oral administration of L. fermentum KBL674 significantly suppressed vaginal C. albicans infection and associated …

Oral Candidiasis in Acute Flaviviral Infection.

Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) is an endemic flaviviral hemorrhagic fever in south India. We report seven cases of oral candidiasis in patients from Karnataka, India, who presented in March and April 2024 with the first phase of KFD. Except for lymphopenia, no other risk factors for oral candidiasis were identified in these patients. All patients were managed with antifungals and did well at the 28-day follow-up. We report this case series to highlight the possibility of transient immunosuppression and the occurrence of opportunistic infections in flaviviral infections such as KFD.

Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis: A Case Report.

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is a rare infectious skin disease. This study reported a case of CMC in a child with clinical manifestations of oral mucosal leukoplakia and erythema and crust-like thick scabs on the skin of the face and upper limbs. Microscopic fungal examination revealed a large amount of pseudohyphae, and the fungal culture indicated Candida albicans. A drug sensitivity test indicated that it was sensitive to itraconazole and nystatin. Laboratory tests did not show significant immunodeficiency or endocrine abnormalities, and gene sequencing did not identify DNA gene …

Advanced Solid Formulations For Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an opportunistic and endogenous infection caused by a fungus of the Candida genus, which can cause pruritus, dysuria, vulvar edema, fissures and maceration of the vulva. The treatment of vaginal candidiasis is carried out mainly by antifungal agents of azole and polyene classes; however, fungal resistance cases have been often observed. For this reason, new therapeutic agents such as essential oils, probiotics and antimicrobial peptides are being investigated, which can be combined with conventional drugs. Local administration of antimicrobials has also been c…

Cutaneous candidiasis caused by Candida kefyr.

Candidiasis is an acute or subacute fungal infection caused by fungi that belongs to candida genus, with Candida albicansbeing the most frequent causative agent. Candida kefyr is a rare cause of candidiasis which has been reported in systemic candidiasis and deep infections. However, to date, it has never been reported as a cause in dermatophytosis. We report a case of candidiasis caused by Candida kefyr in a 72-year-old woman with a chief complaint of pruritic erythematous rash on the back from one day prior to admission. Diagnosis was established based on clinical features, direct microscopi…

Promising Alternative Therapeutics for Oral Candidiasis.

Candida is the main human fungal pathogen causing infections (candidiasis), mostly in the elderly and immunocompromised hosts. Even though Candida spp. is a member of the oral microbiota in symbiosis, in some circumstances, it can cause microbial imbalance leading to dysbiosis, resulting in oral diseases. Alternative therapies are urgently needed to treat oral candidiasis (usually associated to biofilms), as several antifungal drugs' activity has been compromised. This has occurred especially due to an increasing occurrence of drugresistant in Candida spp. strains. The overuse of antifungal me…

Neonatal thrush of newborns: Oral candidiasis?

OBJECTIVES: Neonatal thrush, also called oral candidiasis, is commonly a clinical diagnosis based on white patches on oral mucosal surfaces. Candida albicans is often associated with it. This clinical study aimed to investigate the presence of C. albicans among newborns with or without clinical findings of candidiasis on oral mucosa. Another aim was to investigate how thrush responded to current therapy by acidic liquids such as lingonberry or lemon juice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Swipe samples were collected from 32 healthy, full-term infants younger than 12 months with or without white patches…

Invasive candidiasis and candidemia: new guidelines.

Invasive candidiasis (IC) includes candidemia, disseminated candidiasis with deep organ involvement, endocarditis and meningitis. IC has an attributable mortality of 40% to 50% and is increasingly reported in intensive care units (ICUs). Candida albicans and non-albicans strains are both responsible for infections in ICUs, where empirical and targeted treatments especially need to be initially appropriate. This review synthesizes the most recent guidelines for IC and candidemia from an ICU perspective. Essentially, patients who have been previously exposed to azoles have a higher probability o…

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and oesophageal cancer.

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is often accompanied by endocrine or inflammatory disorders. The association of CMC with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity or oesophagus have been described in patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED). We describe three cases of CMC and oesophageal cancer without the APECED syndrome. The first case refers to a 41-year-old man with Candida paronychia and oral infection and selective IgA deficiency since childhood, who later developed an oesophageal cancer. The second case is a 30-year-old man who prese…
