Biotransformation kinetics and pathways of typical synthetic progestins in soil microcosms.

Gestodene (GES), altrenogest (ALT), and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) are three potent synthetic progestins detected in agricultural soils; however, their biotransformation outcomes in soils remain unclear. This study explored the biotransformation of these progestins in five agricultural soils with different physicochemical properties. The biotransformation data were well-described by a first-order decay model (R2 = 0.83-0.99), with estimated half-lives ranging between 12.1 and 188 h. Amplicon sequencing indicated that the presence of progestins changed the bacterial richness and communit

TdCCA with Dual-Modal Signal Fusion: Degenerated Occipital and Frontal Connectivity of Adult Moyamoya Disease for Early Identification.

Cognitive impairment in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) manifests earlier than clinical symptoms. Early identification of brain connectivity changes is essential for uncovering the pathogenesis of cognitive impairment in MMD. We proposed a temporally driven canonical correlation analysis (TdCCA) method to achieve dual-modal synchronous information fusion from electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for exploring the differences in brain connectivity between MMD and normal control groups. The dual-modal fusion features were extracted based on the imagin…

Changes in brain metabolic connectivity underlie autistic-like social deficits in a rat model of autism spectrum disorder.

The neurobiological basis of social dysfunction and the high male prevalence in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain poorly understood. Alt … tomography scans from VPA-exposed and control rats to estimate metabolic connectivity and conducted canonical correlation analysis of metabolic activity and behavior scores. VPA-treated rats exhibited impairments in social behaviors, and this difference was more pronounced in male than female rats. Similarly, current analyses revealed sex-specific changes in network connectivit …

TRIM21 blocks DDX3X-driven stress granule formation during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection via a non-canonical E3 ligase mechanism.

Tripartite motif-containing 21 (TRIM21) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that binds viral and host proteins to mediate antiviral defense. Its role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, however, is unclear. Here, our analysis of human TB transcriptomic datasets showed that TRIM21 expression levels correlate with TB progression in human patients. We further demonstrated that TRIM21 deficiency suppresses Mtb growth in both macrophages and a murine model of tuberculosis (TB). Mechanistically, TRIM21 limits host resistance to Mtb through a non-canonical pathway distinct with its E3 ligase activit

Obstructive sleep apnea: a canonical correlation of cephalometric and selected demographic variables in obese and nonobese patients.

One hundred male obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients were classified into 2 groups on the basis of body mass index (BMI): 43 nonobese (BMI < 30 kg/m2) and 57 obese (BMI > or = 30 kg/m2) patients. A comprehensive cephalometric analysis with a multivariate statistical method was performed in order to define the different principal components (PCs) of cervico-craniofacial skeletal and upper airway soft tissue morphology in each group and how they contributed to selected elements of the patient demographic data, ie, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), nocturnal oxyhemoglobin saturation, and BMI. Decoding SIGLEC12 in Bladder Cancer: In Silico Profiling of Expression, Tumor-Immune Interactions, and Prognostic Impact.

Background and Objectives: Siglec-XII, encoded by SIGLEC12, is a unique sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin. It lacks a highly conserved R122 residue for sialic acid recognition in humans. Although it is upregulated in bladder cancer (BCa), its role in tumorigenesis remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the expression patterns of SIGLEC12 in BCa and its correlation with disease features. Materials and Methods: An integrated analysis of transcriptomic data and clinical profiles was conducted using various databases and tools, including UALCAN, GEPIA, TIMER, CAMOI

Neutralization of African enterovirus A71 genogroups by antibodies to canonical genogroups.

Enterovirus 71 (EV-A71) is a major public health problem, causing a range of illnesses from hand-foot-and-mouth disease to severe neurological manifestations. EV-A71 strains have been phylogenetically classified into eight genogroups (A to H), based on their capsid-coding genomic region. Genogroups B and C have caused large outbreaks worldwide and represent the two canonical circulating EV-A71 subtypes. Little is known about the antigenic diversity of new genogroups as compared to the canonical ones. Here, we compared the antigenic features of EV-A71 strains that belong to the canonical B and

Feature selection and dimensionality reduction in multi-omics.

High-throughput multi-omics technologies generate high-dimensional, heterogeneous and noisy datasets, making robust biomarker discovery and disease modelling challenging. This review critically examines dimensionality reduction and representation strategies for multi-omics analysis while distinguishing three related but different goals: feature selection, feature extraction/representation learning, and multi-omics integration. We use sparse canonical correlation analysis (sCCA), variational autoencoders (VAEs), and graph convolutional networks (GCNs) as representative case studies spanning spa…

Neural correlates of device-based sleep characteristics in adolescents.

Understanding the brain mechanisms underlying adolescent sleep patterns and their impact on psychophysiological development is complex. We applied sparse canonical correlation analysis (sCCA) to data from 3,222 adolescents in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, integrating sleep characteristics with multimodal imaging. This reveals two key sleep-brain dimensions: one linking later sleep onset and shorter duration to decreased subcortical-cortical connectivity and another associating a higher heart rate and shorter light sleep with lower brain volumes and connectivity. Hier…

Integration of multidimensional splicing data and GWAS summary statistics for risk gene discovery.

A common strategy for the functional interpretation of genome-wide association study (GWAS) findings has been the integrative analysis of GW … uce a multidimensional splicing gene (MSG) approach, which consists of two stages: 1) we use sparse canonical correlation analysis (sCCA) to construct latent canonical vectors (CVs) by identifying sparse linear combinations of genetic variants and splicing events that are maximally correlated with each other; and 2) we test for the association between the genetically regulated …

Environmental drivers of heterotrophic euglenoid diversity in Czech bogs.

We investigated whether the diversity and community composition of morphologically recognizable heterotrophic euglenoids are associated with major environmental gradients in Czech bog habitats. Bogs and other Sphagnum-dominated wetlands are biodiversity hotspots for microbial eukaryotes, yet the ecological structuring of heterotrophic euglenoids in these systems remains poorly understood. We examined 419 samples from 110 sites from mire sites using live light microscopy, and species occurrences were related to habitat characteristics and water chemistry using correlation analyses, canonical co

Linked dimensions of psychopathology and connectivity in functional brain networks.

Neurobiological abnormalities associated with psychiatric disorders do not map well to existing diagnostic categories. High co-morbidity suggests dimensional circuit-level abnormalities that cross diagnoses. Here we seek to identify brain-based dimensions of psychopathology using sparse canonical correlation analysis in a sample of 663 youths. This analysis reveals correlated patterns of functional connectivity and psychiatric symptoms. We find that four dimensions of psychopathology - mood, psychosis, fear, and externalizing behavior - are associated (r = 0.68-0.71) with distinct patterns of …
