Growth and differentiation of human keratinocytes cultured on eye lens capsules.

The efficiency of the outgrowth of human epidermal and hair-follicle-sheath keratinocytes was studied using three different growth substrates: plastic, type-I collagen and bovine eye lens capsules (the Epicult system). It was shown that the eye lens capsule is the best substrate, since a higher percentage of cultures showed outgrowth, and the outgrowth of epidermal keratinocytes was much more rapid. This effect is related to the faster migration (not proliferation) of cells grown on lens capsules as compared to the two other substrates. The view that lens capsules can replace the basement memb

In vitro and in vivo availability of hydrophilized phenytoin from capsules.

The effect of phenytoin hydrophilization on the liquid penetration rate into prepared plugs, on the disintegration time, on the in vitro release rate, and on in vivo absorption in humans was studied. Hydrophilization was performed by intensive mixing of the hydrophobic drug with a small amount of methylcellulose solution. Liquid penetration into the treated plugs was independent of the liquid wetting potency and extremely high compared to the pure drug plugs. Analogous results were obtained for the disintegration time and in vitro release rates from capsules loaded with pure and treated drug.

Effect of hydrophilization of hydrophobic drugs on release rate from capsules.

The release of poorly soluble hydrophobic drugs from capsules can be improved significantly by the creation of a hydrophilic surface by intensive mixing of the hydrophobic drug with a small amount of a solution of a hydrophilic excipient. This technique was introduced previously for the production of microgranules. The data presented indicate that the hydrophilic material is mechanically distributed over the hydrophobic surface. The creation of hydrophilic capillaries in a capsule or tablet allowed the rapid penetration of the dissolution fluid, resulting in a dispersion of well-wetted particl

A Compliant SMA-Actuated Capsule Robot with Integrated Locomotion and Steering for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy.

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) is a minimally invasive technology for imaging the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, particularly the small intestine, where conventional endoscopy faces accessibility limitations. Traditional capsule endoscopes rely on passive motion driven by natural peristalsis, which limits controllability and may increase the risk of capsule retention. To address these challenges, this study presents the design and experimental validation of a compliant active capsule endoscope actuated by four Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) spring actuators. A key feature of the proposed system is a

Magnetic Steering of Capsule Endoscopy Improves Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy Completion Rate.

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy is currently available as a noninvasive and effective diagnostic modality to identify small bowel abnormalities, with a completion rate to the cecum between 75.1 and 95.6%. A novel magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (MCE) system could facilitate passage of the capsule through the pylorus, thereby reducing the gastric transit time (GTT). OBJECTIVE: We performed this study to determine whether magnetic steering could improve the capsule endoscopy completion rate (CECR) compared to standard protocol. METHODS: Patients referred for MCE in our center from June

The prophylactic effect of itraconazole capsules and fluconazole capsules for systemic fungal infections in patients with acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes: a Japanese multicenter randomized, controlled study.

We performed a randomized, controlled study comparing the prophylactic effects of capsule forms of fluconazole (n = 110) and itraconazole (n = 108) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) during and after chemotherapy. There were 4 cases with possible systemic fungal infection in the itraconazole group, and there were 8 possible and 3 probable cases in the fluconazole group. Adverse events did not significantly differ in the 2 groups. In patients with MDS or in the remission-induction phase of chemotherapy, the numbers of cases with probable or possible

Adhesive capsulitis: current concepts.

Adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as frozen shoulder, is a condition characterized by pain and progressive loss of shoulder motion. This condition typically affects individuals between 40 and 60 years of age and can severely impact daily functioning and quality of life. The etiology of adhesive capsulitis is multifactorial, with contributions from systemic conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disorders, as well as idiopathic factors. This review provides an overview of current concepts in the diagnosis and management of adhesive capsulitis, highlighting advancements in both conservative a

Quantitative measurements in capsule endoscopy.

This review summarizes several approaches for quantitative measurement in capsule endoscopy. Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) typically provides wireless imaging of small bowel. Currently, a variety of quantitative measurements are implemented in commercially available hardware/software. The majority is proprietary and hence undisclosed algorithms. Measurement of amount of luminal contamination allows calculating scores from whole VCE studies. Other scores express the severity of small bowel lesions in Crohn׳s disease or the degree of villous atrophy in celiac disease. Image processing with numer

Adhesive capsulitis of the hip: a review.

Adhesive capsulitis of the hip (ACH) is a rare clinical entity. Similar to adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder, ACH is characterized by a painful decrease in active and passive range of motion as synovial inflammation in the acute stages of the disease progresses to capsular fibrosis in the chronic stages. Once other diagnoses have been ruled out, management of ACH is tailored to reduce inflammation in the acute stages with NSAIDs, intra-articular steroid injections, and targeted physical therapy while biomechanical dysfunction in the spine, hip, sacroiliac joint, or lower limb joints is addre

Capsule endoscopy and Crohn's disease.

Capsule endoscopy has been shown to detect small bowel inflammatory changes better than any other imaging modality. Selection criteria have been optimized to increase the yield of capsule endoscopy in patients suspected of having Crohn's disease. Capsule endoscopy allows for earlier diagnosis of Crohn's disease of the small bowel and improved diagnosis of colitis in patients where it is unclear if they suffer from Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. A test capsule is available to assess for small bowel strictures and thus avoid capsule retention. It is envisioned that the manner in which we treat C

Capsule endoscopy in portal hypertension.

Since the introduction of small bowel capsule endoscopy, and more recently of esophageal capsule endoscopy, these diagnostic tools have become available for the evaluation of the consequences of portal hypertension in the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The main advantage of the esophageal and the small bowel capsule is the relatively less invasiveness that could potentially increase patients' adherence to endoscopic screening/surveillance programs. When esophageal capsule endoscopy was compared with traditional gastroscopy, it showed good sensitivity and specificity in recognizing th

Capsule enteroscopy of the small intestine.

The advent of video capsule endoscopy (VCE) in 2000 has dramatically changed the diagnosis and management of many diseases of the small intestine. In this review we discuss the procedure, the various indications and contraindications, adverse effects, and future prospects of VCE. VCE has a significant role in the diagnosis of obscure gastrointestinal hemorrhage and Crohn's disease and has the highest diagnostic yield in comparison to other diagnostic modalities. Furthermore, VCE has gained an important role in the management and surveillance of suspected small bowel tumors and in patients with

Capsule endoscopy: a surgical perspective.

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy (CE) is gaining acceptance as an accurate method of imaging the small bowel. However, it is still being assessed for its use in successfully changing management and improving outcomes. We report the initial experience of CE in Tasmania. METHODS: Findings were collected retrospectively for the first 55 consecutive CE carried out in Tasmania from May 2003 to June 2005. One surgeon had carried out and reported on these tests. Findings included indication, previous tests, abnormalities detected, subsequent change in management and outcomes. RESULTS: The median age w

Cerulean posterior capsule opacity.

We present a case of light-blue posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in a patient who had cerulean cataracts removed 1 year earlier. The color of the PCO was similar to that of the cerulean cataracts prior to extraction. Posterior capsule opacification is a common complication after cataract surgery; however, we could not find a similar case of cerulean posterior capsule opacity in the literature. The findings in this case suggest that the mechanism of the light-blue color formation in the cataract was also present in the lens epithelial cells forming the posterior capsule opacity.
