Cholelithiasis is a rarely reported condition in lions and zoological carnivora. This report documents two geriatric, male, African lions (Panthera leo; Lions A and B) submitted for routine necropsy following euthanasia due to unrelated conditions. Pre-euthanasia serum biochemistry revealed unremarkable hepatobiliary markers for both lions. On necropsy, cholelithiasis was observed in both individuals, with Lion A displaying more severe gallstone accumulation and a biliary cystadenoma. Gallstones from Lion A were analysed using X-ray diffraction, element content analysis, and scanning electron …

Historically, flea-borne diseases are among the most important medical diseases of humans. Plague and murine typhus are known for centuries … ed with wild canids. Fleas found on dogs originate from rodents, birds, insectivores and from other Carnivora. Dogs therefore may serve as ideal bridging hosts for the introduction of flea-borne diseases from nature to home. In addition to their role as ectoparasites they cause nuisance for humans and animals and may be the cause for severe allergic reactio …

Captive carnivores are susceptible to a wide array of infectious and parasitic diseases, which reflects the diversity of the seven families of Carnivora. Unfortunately, relatively few in-depth studies have been conducted on diseases of non-domestic carnivores, and much remains to be learned, especially regarding diseases of small carnivores (e.g. mustelids, viverrids and procyonids). The more important infectious diseases of carnivores include rabies, canine distemper, and diseases caused by parvoviruses, coronaviruses and herpesviruses. Few parasitic or bacterial pathogens are significant in …

Leptospirosis is the most common zoonotic disease worldwide and is considered endemic in countries with tropical climates. It is caused by 1 … nimals of 11 species from two classes (Mammalia and Reptilia), four orders (Primates, Artiodactyla, Carnivora, Crocodilia), and nine genera. The more prevalent serovars were Icterohaemorrhagiae and Tarassovi and the highest titers were reactive to the serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae with a value of 1: 51,200.

The opportunistic yeast Malassezia pachydermatis is commonly recovered from both normal and diseased skin of warm-blooded animals. The diver … pe Ia, appeared to be ubiquitous since it was observed in isolates recovered from domestic and wild carnivora, from a monkey and from man. In contrast the sequence types Ic, Id and Ig seemed to be more host-specific; they included isolates recovered exclusively from rhinoceros, dogs and ferrets, respectively. None of the seven sequence types correlated with …

Wildlife rabies is enzootic in the USA apart from Hawaii. This viral zoonosis perpetuates using mammalian reservoirs within the Chiroptera and Carnivora. In the southeastern USA, the predominant rabies virus variants are associated with raccoons (Procyon lotor) and bats. Besides being enzootic for bat rabies, Alabama is the westernmost USA state for raccoon rabies perpetuation. To assess the recent viral dynamics of wildlife rabies in Alabama, 65 samples of rabid animals were acquired from public health submissions during 2020-25. Rabies virus nucleoprotein gene sequences were generated for ph…

Muscular sarcosporidial infections by Sarcocystis lutrae (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) from the otter (Lutra lutra) and badger (Meles meles) (Carnivora: Mustelidae) were found in the Czech Republic. As part of a diversity evaluation of Sarcocystis in wild carnivores during 2016-2017, samples of diaphragm, tongue and hind-limb muscles were collected from nine districts, examined by compression and characterized molecularly. Cyst walls were thin, with no visible protrusions, and histological sections of infected muscle tissue showed no host responses. Fourteen of 17 badgers (82% prevalence) and o…

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides, Canidae, Carnivora) is a middle-sized omnivore with excessive autumnal fattening and winter sleep. We studied adaptations of the species to boreal climate and photoperiod by following the plasma reproductive and thyroid hormone concentrations of farm-bred raccoon dogs (n=32) for 12 months. On August 16, 2000, and February 8, 2001, half of the raccoon dogs received continuous-release melatonin implants (the MEL group). The other half was sham-operated (the SHAM group). Between November 27, 2000, and January 25, 2001, half of the animals of both groups …

In Western Europe the fox and other carnivora are parasitized by two specific ticks. The study of host-parasite relationships and knowledge of rabies epidemiology led us to investigate for a possible part played by ticks as reservoir of rabies virus. Several hundreds of ticks (Pholeoixodes hexagonus and Pholeoixodes canisuga) were collected on wild foxes. Ticks collected from naturally infected rabid foxes were set on healthy foxes in order to contaminate them. Ticks collected from non-rabid foxes were set on healthy foxes in order to contaminate them. Ticks collected from non-rabid foxes were…

Neurons that utilize melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) as a neuromodulator are localized in the postero-lateral hypothalamus and incerto-hypothalamic area. These neurons project diffusely throughout the central nervous system and have been implicated in critical physiological processes, such as sleep. Unlike rodents, in the order carnivora as well as in humans, MCH exerts its biological functions through two receptors: MCHR-1 and MCHR-2. Hence, the cat is an optimal animal to model MCHergic functions in humans. In the present study, we examined the distribution of MCH-positive fibers in the …

Ten isolates of Trypanosoma evansi from the Pantanal region of Brazil, recently derived from coati (Nasua nasua, carnivora, Procyonidae), horses and dogs, were characterized on the basis of biological (experimental infections in Wistar rats) and biochemical (multilocus enzyme eletrophoresis) data. Biological data were analyzed by Nested analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis. Marked heterogeneity in virulence was observed in the isolates. Some of the isolates showed an undulating parasitaemia, typical for African trypanosomes. This biological heterogeneity did not correspond with the biochemi…

Linguatulosis, caused by Linguatula serrata, commonly known as the tongue worm, primarily affects food animals and carnivores and poses a potential zoonotic risk. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the global prevalence of L. serrata in these hosts. A comprehensive search identified 55 studies involving 36,242 samples from food animals and 1530 samples from carnivores across four continents. The results indicated significant variability in prevalence rates, with food animals showing a pooled prevalence of 19.1 %, and carnivores exhibiting a higher pooled prevalence of 3

BACKGROUND: Helminth parasites are critical components of biodiversity and influence the health of both wild and domestic carnivorous mammals. Despite their ecological and public health importance, comprehensive data on helminth diversity in Uzbekistan remain fragmented. This study delivers a thorough and updated synthesis of helminth parasites infecting 15 species of terrestrial and semi-aquatic carnivorous mammals in Uzbekistan.
METHODS: This study was designed as an updated checklist and narrative review rather than a formal systematic review or meta-analysis. A total of 120 documents publ

The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, is the largest of modern-day carnivorous marsupials and was hunted to extinction by European settlers in Australia. Its physical resemblance to eutherian wolves is a striking example of evolutionary convergence to similar ecological niches. However, whether the neuroanatomical organization of the thylacine brain resembles that of canids and how it compares with other mammals remain unknown due to the scarcity of available samples. Here, we gained access to a century-old hematoxylin-stained histological series of a thylacine brain, digitalized it at high resol

To enhance bite force at the canines, feliform carnivorans have short rostra relative to caniform carnivorans. Rostral reduction in feliforms results in less rostrocaudal space for the maxilloturbinals, the complex set of bones involved in conditioning inspired air and conserving water. It is unknown whether the maxilloturbinals might show adaptations to adjust for this loss, such as greater complexity than what is observed in longer snouted caniforms. To understand the impact of rostral shortening on turbinals in feliforms, we used high resolution CT scans to quantify turbinal surface areas (…

Dirofilaria immitis is a filarial nematode parasite that is currently widely enzootic in dog and coyote (Canis latrans) populations of California. Weak historical evidence suggests that the initial focus of D. immitis in California occurred 3 decades ago in the Sierra Nevada foothills (SNF) and spread to other parts of California thereafter. However, this hypothesis is difficult to evaluate because of the lack of epidemiological studies on heartworm in California before 1970. We investigated this hypothesis by comparing D. immitis prevalence in coyotes between initial (1975-1985) and current (

With the aims to determine the infection frequency by tapeworms of Diphyllobothrium genus 30 samples from captive wild carnivores were analyzed. A 30% of the animal analyzed was positive to the infection. Whereas the family Procionidae has a high percentage of positivity (60%), Canidae have lower infection ratio (20-25%). The accuracy for the diagnosis of Diphylobothrium was made by the morphology of scolex, proglottids and eggs. This is the first report of the parasite presence in Argentine wild carnivores.
