Achyranthes aspera L. is traditionally used to relieve constipation, diarrhea, and asthma. Its crude extract (Aa.Cr) was evaluated through in vivo and ex vivo experiments to rationalize these medicinal uses of A. aspera and to provide their scientific basis. This study presents an observation of the anti-inflammatory effect of Aconitum carmichaeli decoction on water-immersion stress induced gastric ulcer in mice and 0.6 mol/L HCl induced gastric ulcer in rats. The observation showed that the decoction was resistant to the castor oil induced and Cassia angustifolia leaf induced experimental diarrhea in mice, and also had marked analgesic action. It is thus suggested that Aconitum carmichaeli is useful clinically as a spleen-stomach warming and analgesic agent in traditional Chinese medicine.

Local venous reactions during and after i.v injections of three different formulations of diazepam were studied in 200 patients undergoing gastroscopy. Of the patients receiving diazepam in propylene glycol (Stesolid) 78% experienced pain on injection and 48% subsequently developed clinical evidence of thrombophlebitis. The figures for Stesolid MR (diazepam in Cremophor EL) were 38% and 9% respectively.
