Laminectomy for treatment of cauda equina syndrome in a cat.

A 16-year-old spayed female Siamese cat was presented with a history of paraparesis and obstipation. The cat's impaired function was attributed to malalignment of the L7-S1 spine (cauda equina syndrome) and to traumatic fracture of the left femoral neck, with severe degenerative arthritis. Laminectomy resolved the cauda equina problem, and the hip joint was not treated.

Pseudoclaudication syndrome caused by a tumour of the cauda equina.

A typical case of pseudoclaudication syndrome (neurogenic intermittent claudication), where the cause of the lumbar spinal canal narrowing was an intraspinal neoplasm, is reported. A neoplasm as the cause of this syndrome seems to be very rare, possibly because of the progressive nature of the space-occupying lesion and hence the rapid development of other predominant symptoms.

Neoplastic Cauda Equina Syndrome: When Do We Not Operate?

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Burkitt lymphoma is a high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can cause spinal cord compression leading to neurological compromise. Prompt interventions are critical to prevent permanent deficits. Through this case report, we highlight the rapid resolution of acute cauda equina syndrome in an adolescent with Burkitt lymphoma in the setting of tandem spinal cord and cauda equina compression. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old man developed cervical lymphadenopathy and weight loss 2 months prior and was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma 1 month earlier. He developed bil…

Lightning strike‑induced cauda equina syndrome: a case report.

Peripheral nerve injuries after being struck by lightning have been documented. Here, we report a case of cauda equina syndrome induced by lightning. A 27-year-old man presented with numbness, a burning sensation in the saddle region, and increased urinary urgency after being struck by lightning. He had absent Achilles reflexes and paresthesia in the saddle region upon neurological examination, and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine was normal. Electrophysiological studies indicated involvement of bilateral L5, S1, and S2 myotomes and revealed cauda equina lesions. Peripheral nerve injury…

Cauda Equina Syndrome: Poor Recovery Prognosis Despite Early Treatment.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective patient's database operated on a cauda equina syndrome (CES). OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to identify prognosis factors for favorable functional recovery after CES. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CES is a neurologic impairment of variable symptoms associating urinary, bowel, and sexual dysfunctions with or without motor or sensitive deficits caused by nerve root compression of the cauda equina. The definition of CES remains debated, as well as the prognosis factors for favorable functional recovery and the benefit of early surgery. METHODS: One hundred forty…

Management of cauda equina syndrome during pregnancy and postpartum.

Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare condition that occurs from multiple nerve root compression. It is considered a surgical emergency because it can lead to permanent neurological damage. There is limited literature regarding management and prognosis of CES for pregnant patients, leaving providers with many questions when encountering patients with this condition. We describe the case of a patient who developed CES during pregnancy. She presented at 30 weeks gestation and successfully underwent surgical decompression in prone position. She later delivered via elective caesarean at term. This…

[Electrodiagnosis of Lumbar Spine Disorders and Cauda Equina Syndrome].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely employed in the diagnosis of lumbar spine disorders, such as lumbar spinal stenosis or lumbar disc herniation. However, incomplete specificity is a definite drawback, given that MRI abnormalities are frequently identified in aged control subjects. Relying solely on MRI without considering clinical symptoms/signs or electrodiagnosis may lead to misdiagnosis. In contrast, electrodiagnostic tests are generally considered to have higher specificity than MRI, making them more useful for preventing unnecessary surgeries. Needle EMG can clarify the distribut

Intracranial Mimics of Cauda Equina Syndrome: Heads or Tails?

BACKGROUND: To report cases of extraspinal mimics of cauda equina syndrome (CES) to enable prompt diagnosis and treatment in the future. CES results from compression of spinal nerve roots. Current practice mandates lumbosacral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning to diagnose CES. However, it may not reveal compression or provide an explanation for the presentation. We present 3 cases of suspected CES who went on to have intracranial pathology. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients presenting with CES-type features who were subsequently found to have causative intracranial patholo…

Cauda equina syndrome during pregnancy: A condition to consider.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain is a common cause of medical consultation during pregnancy and usually supposes a non-malignant prognostic. PRESENTATION OF CASES: We report two cases of pregnant women whom suffered cauda equina syndrome during pregnancy and underwent emergency surgery after the birth of their babies. DISCUSSION: MRI is the main diagnosis method for cauda equina even during pregnancy. Modern obstetric practice asks surgeons to perform surgery under safe conditions at all gestation stages. Surgical decompression reports better prognosis when practiced within the first 48 h after t…

Conus Medullaris Arachnoid Cyst Presenting as Cauda Equina Syndrome.

Intradural arachnoid cysts are a rare cause of spinal cord and nerve root compression. Primarily, they are present in the thoracic region posteriorly. We report a 25-year-old man who had an intradural arachnoid cyst at the level of conus medullaris presenting with cauda equina syndrome, which is very rare.

Epidemiology of cauda equina syndrome. What changed until 2015.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics and outcomes of cases admitted to hospital with cauda equina syndrome (CES) at the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (IOT) from 2005 to 2015. Secondly, this article is a continuation of the epidemiological work of the same base published in 2013, and will be important for other comparative studies to a greater understanding of the disease and its epidemiology. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of the medical records of admissions due to CES at IOT in the period 2005-2015 with diagnosis of CES and n…

Obesity and spinal epidural lipomatosis in cauda equina syndrome.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Although lumbar disc herniations are common, only a small portion of these herniations lead to cauda equina syndrome (CES), which is an uncommon but debilitating disorder. Why some patients with herniation develop CES, when most do not, remains unknown. Preexisting subclinical epidural lipomatosis may limit canal space such that an otherwise benign herniation causes CES. PURPOSE: This study determines whether patients with an acute disc herniation and CES have a greater body mass index (BMI) and greater quantity of epidural fat compared with control subjects with non-CES s…
