Human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) is a cytotoxic protein that aggregates into oligomers and fibrils that kill pancreatic β-cells. Here we analyze hIAPP aggregation in vitro, measured via thioflavin-T fluorescence. Familial neurohypophysial diabetes insipidus (FNDI), an autosomal dominant disorder, is mostly caused by mutations in the gene of neurophysin II (NPII), the carrier protein of arginine vasopressin (AVP). The effects of zinc deficiency were studied in mice submandibular salivary glands (SMG). Zn-restricted mice (Zn-) were maintained from weaning until adult age (60 days) with a powdered diet containing 3 mg Zn2+/kg. Pair-fed animals (30 mg Zn2+/kg powdered diet) and control animals fed a regular pelleted diet were also used. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the cytologic characteristics of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTPs) on smear preparations.
STUDY DESIGN: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was initially attempted preoperatively in five cases, but the specimens were inappropriate for interpretation because only a few tumor cells were obtained. Regression of submandibular acinar cell hyperplasia after withdrawal of the mitogenic stimulus induced by isoprenaline was studied in male Wistar rats. Intraperitoneal administration of 39 mg of isoprenaline, in divided doses over a 9-day period, resulted in a marked increase in gland size and weight.
