Human neurocysticercosis. IgE in cerebrospinal fluid.

The detection of IgE is technically difficult because of its reduced concentrations in serum, and even lower concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In the present investigation we studied 86 CSF samples using an immunoenzymatic method with an anti-IgE-alkaline phosphatase conjugate and a fluorigenic substrate. The samples were from three groups: A) 29 patients with neurocysticercosis (NC), B) 36 patients with different neurologic disorders (neurosyphilis, neurotuberculosis, meningitis, tumors, hemorrhage) and C) 21 discharged individuals who had been hospitalized for bacterial meningitis…

Meningococcal meningitis with 'normal' cerebrospinal fluid.

A prospective study was made of all patients with normal CSF counts and positive cultures for Neisseria meningitidis diagnosed in "El Vallés" County, Barcelona between January 1987 and December 1990. Meningococcal meningitis was documented in 82 patients, eight of whom (seven children, five boys and two girls with a mean age of 5.6 +/- 3.3 years, and a 69-year-old male patient) had no apparent CSF abnormalities in the initial lumbar puncture. At the time of admission all patients had fever (mean 39.1 degrees C) of 10.8 +/- 5.6 hour duration and petechial rash which had been present for a mean

Neurosurgical approaches to cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea.

The evolutionary concepts of pinpointing and treating cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas over the past few decades are reviewed taking into consideration the dynamic character of CSF circulation. The localization of the site of leakage is greatly facilitated by the judicious use of a variety of radioisotope and radiological techniques. The most recent are Metrizamide CT Cisternography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is asserted that still the most challenging cases are those with intermittent liquorrheas, and those patients in which the site of the fistula is not easily defined. The authors…

Cerebrospinal fluid leakage complicating orbital exenteration.

In three cases of cerebrospinal fluid leakage complicating orbital exenteration, leakage occurred intraoperatively following relatively low-power (0 to 25 W), high-frequency monopolar cautery to the orbital roof. Six cadaver orbits and 25 dried skulls were examined to investigate possible causes of intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In this experimental model, monopolar cautery to the orbital roof did not cause cerebrospinal fluid leakage; however, cautery to preexistent foramina or experimentally created defects in the orbital bones did. In exenteration, monopolar cautery may transmi…

Mitotic activity in cerebrospinal fluid cells.

Mitotic figures were observed in 38 cases of a series of 3200 CSF cytograms. Their relative incidence was the highest in cases of tumoural invasion of the CSF, but they also occurred in inflammatory and reactive fluids and did not necessarily indicate tumoural origin. In bacterial infections of the central nervous system they were mainly present during the repair phase of the disease. In haemorrhagic spinal fluid they were absent. These findings suggest that cell division in spinal fluid tends to develop in conditions in which the viability of the cells is not affected by introduction of forei

Cerebrospinal fluid hydrodynamic studies in children.

CSF-hydrodynamic investigation using the constant pressure infusion method was used in children. The CSF resting pressure was recorded and the CSF formation rate was measured. The conductance of the CSF outflow pathways and the pressure in the sagittal sinus were calculated. The method was used in children with suspicion of disturbed CSF hydrodynamics due to various neurological and other conditions. The method is applicable in paediatric neurological diagnostics and provides information for further understanding of the mechanisms behind cranial hypertension. The following mean values are offe

[Cerebrospinal fluid hypotension after brain surgery].

A severe complication, c. s. f. hypotension ( CSFH ), developed in 9 patients after intracranial manipulations for meningioma (4), intracranial aneurysm (3), and subdural hematoma (2). It occurred on the second or third postoperative day and was characterized by rapid development of general cerebral disorders (even to deep loss of consciousness) and aggravation of focal disorders. An important role in the differential diagnosis of the hypotensive and the hypertensive syndromes is attached to lumbar puncture which in cases of CSFH reveals very low c. s. f. pressure or none at all. Effective the

[Diagnostic value of cerebrospinal fluid analysis].

The increasing importance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis as a diagnostic tool in neurology is the consequence of major advances in neuroimmunology. Thus, immunological mechanisms are involved not only in acute infections of the CNS but also play a role in many subacute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the nervous system as well as in neoplastic disorders. CSF analysis is important to the clinician in providing clues for the detection of immune processes that are restricted to the brain. A wide variety of techniques, including cytological, bacteriological, virological and immunologic…

Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea and its management.

A series of 100 cases of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea has been analysed with reference to the incidence and pattern of meningitis in order to formulate a rationale for the future management of such cases. Most cases are best managed conservatively for the first 14 days during which the majority resolve spontaneously. Of those requiring surgery, the trans-ethmoid/sphenoidal route of repair is preferred except in certain specified circumstances. The high incidence of meningitis in cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea following nasal or trans-sphenoidal surgery probably demands early operation by c…

Electrolyte concentrations in sheep cerebrospinal fluid.

Cerebrospinal fluid (csf) of sheep was obtained by acute lumbar puncture and from chronic cannulations of the lateral cerebral ventricle. The concentrations of ions in the csf including chloride which had previously been reported to be very high, were found to be similar to those of other mammals and were not greatly affected by changes in plasma electrolyte composition associated with adrenalectomy.
