LIFESTYLE, NUTRITIONAL CULTURE, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS OF THE BODY IN CONDITIONS OF RADIONUCLIDE CONTAMINATION.

The article examines the issues of a healthy lifestyle, nutritional culture, and the physiological needs for essentialnutrients and energy for the population living in areas radioactively contaminated as a result of the Chornobyl disaster. The radioactive substances will remain in the environment for several more generations, influencing theirhealth. Providing acceptable living conditions for the population in such territories is a relevant problem thatrequires studying and analyzing the impact on public health, as well as developing ways to correct nutrition as themain source of toxicant inta

Suicide and other causes of death among Chernobyl cleanup workers from Estonia, 1986 - 2020: an update.

Mortality was studied in a cohort of 4831 men from Estonia who participated in the environmental cleanup of the radioactively contaminated areas around Chernobyl in 1986-1991. Their mortality in 1986-2020 was compared with the mortality in the Estonian male population. A total of 1503 deaths were registered among the 4812 traced men. The all-cause standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was 1.04 (95% CI 0.99-1.09). All-cancer mortality was elevated (SMR 1.16, 95% CI 1.03-1.28). Radiation-related cancers were in excess (SMR 1.20, 95% CI 1.03-1.36); however, the excesses could be attributed to tobacc

Spatial positioning of RET and H4 following radiation exposure leads to tumor development.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a well-known risk factor for a number of human cancers, including leukemia, thyroid cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, and many others. Although it has been known for a long time that radiation exposure to the cell results in extensive DNA damage, including double strand DNA breaks, the exact mechanisms of radiation-induced carcinogenesis remain unknown. Recently, a large increase in incidence of thyroid cancer was observed in children exposed to radiation after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. A high prevalence of chromosomal rearrangements involving the RET gene w

[Registration of stable aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes using G-differential chromosome staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization methods].

G-banding analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for whole chromosomes 1, 2 and 4 were applied in comparative assay for frequency of stable chromosome aberrations in 37 individuals with previous exposure to radiation (15 clean-up workers/liquidators of Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and 22 residents of radiocontaminated areas) and in 18 individuals of a reference group. In G-banding analysis of stable aberrations, we used classification of Ohtaki K. et al., 1992, in compliance with ISCN, 1985. FISH-assay for translocations is performed in accordance with classification

Overview of 1993 research activities in Belarus related to the Chernobyl accident.

This overview describes the medical and biological consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident that had been assessed by Belarus scientists as of 1993. In particular, childhood thyroid cancer has increased in both frequency and severity. Other malignant tumors may have also increased, as may have childhood diseases that result from impaired immune function. It is unknown whether these increases in human disease (other than thyroid cancer) are due to improved methods of reporting or to exposure to ionizing radiation. In addition to the medical consequences of radiation damage, th

Long-term effects of radiation exposure on health.

Late-onset effects of exposure to ionising radiation on the human body have been identified by long-term, large-scale epidemiological studies. The cohort study of Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (the Life Span Study) is thought to be the most reliable source of information about these health effects because of the size of the cohort, the exposure of a general population of both sexes and all ages, and the wide range of individually assessed doses. For this reason, the Life Span Study has become fundamental to risk assessment in the radiation protection syste

Psychosocial state of the adult evacuees and risk factors of negative change.

UNLABELLED: Numerous scientific studies have been carried out since the ChNPP accident indicating that the last one has caused a severe psychosocial stress in survivors. Population of radioactively contaminated territories, people migrated from the areas of strict radiation control, and accident consequences clean up participants in 1986 1987 were covered by the conducted research projects. Nature of the stress herewith is polygenic and includes factors directly related to the Chernobyl catastrophe, and factors being a result of social and economic circumstances. This report is devot ed to the

[Loss and uncontrolled use of radioactive sources].

In the course of history, exposure to radioactive sources escaping regular control, has been the main cause of fatal accidents, with the exception of the reactor accident at Chernobyl. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, numerous lost sources have been found, sometimes with serious physical damage. The attacks of September 11, 2001 have focussed the attention on the possibility of nuclear terrorism. Although the risks of fatal consequences are rather limited, the possible uncontrolled exposure to ionizing radiation has an important psycho-social impact on the population. After a brie

Identification of kinase fusion oncogenes in post-Chernobyl radiation-induced thyroid cancers.

Exposure to ionizing radiation during childhood markedly increases the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer. We examined tissues from 26 Ukrainian patients with thyroid cancer who were younger than 10 years of age and living in contaminated areas during the time of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. We identified nonoverlapping somatic driver mutations in all 26 cases through candidate gene assays and next-generation RNA sequencing. We found that 22 tumors harbored fusion oncogenes that arose primarily through intrachromosomal rearrangements. Altogether, 23 of the oncogenic drivers

Female reproductive function in areas affected by radiation after the Chernobyl power station accident.

This paper reports the results of a comprehensive survey of the effects of the accidental release of radiation caused by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in April 1986. The accident and the resulting release of radiation and radioactive products into the atmosphere produced the most serious environmental contamination so far recorded. We have concentrated on evaluating the outcomes and health risks to women, their reproductive situation, and consequences for their progeny. We have concentrated on two well-defined areas: the Chechersky district of the Gomel region in Beloruss

Theoretical interpretation of ecological observations of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: application of the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model.

PURPOSE: Ecological observations in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) show that populations of large mammals, such as wolves, boars, and elks, have recovered and remain stable despite chronic exposure to radiation. This study applies the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model-a dynamic, dose-rate-dependent mathematical model-to the CEZ environment to explain the observed ecological stability under persistent low-dose-rate exposure that conventional Linear Non-Threshold (LNT) models fail to predict. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The WAM model explicitly incorporates removal processes of radiation-induced mutated

Evaluation of 131I transfer in the environment based on the available measurements made in Belarus after the Chernobyl accident.

This study evaluates the 131I transfer from ground deposition to the human thyroid gland after the Chernobyl accident using measurements of 131I concentrations in 1,252 soil, 124 grass, and 136 cow's milk samples as well as 131I thyroid activity measured in 3,100 individuals included in the Belarusian-American cohort. The following parameters of an 131I environmental transfer model used to calculate thyroid doses were evaluated in this study: (i) the interception factor of 131I by pasture grass, which was described by a purely empirical equation, (ii) the removal rate of 131I from pasture gras

LATE ONCOLOGICAL AFTEREFFECTS OF RADIATION EXPOSURE CAUSED BY THE CHORNOBYL ACCIDENT.

Studies of the longterm oncological consequences after the Chornobyl accident show a significant impact of radiation exposure on the cancer incidence rate in affected population in Ukraine. This is supported by the increased radiation risk of leukaemia in liquidators, which exceeds national population rates, and its value is comparable to the data on hibakushi, who were subjected to Abombings. For the first time in the cleanup workers cohort the radiation dependence of chronic lymphoid leukaemia was established. There are radiation associated risks of leukemia in children who have been exposed

14. Protective measures for activities in Chernobyl's radioactively contaminated territories.

Owing to internally absorbed radionuclides, radiation levels for individuals living in the contaminated territories of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia have been increasing steadily since 1994. Special protective measures in connection with agriculture, forestry, hunting, and fishing are necessary to protect the health of people in all the radioactively contaminated territories. Among the measures that have proven to be effective in reducing levels of incorporated radionuclides in meat production are food additives with ferrocyanides, zeolites, and mineral salts. Significant decreases in radionucl

CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND TOPICAL ISSUES IN RADIATION OPHTHALMOLOGY: POST-CHORNOBYL EXPERIENCE.

The Chornobyl disaster - a largescale nuclear accident that caused significant radiation exposure to large populations of people. The work of ophthalmologists who studied its consequences radically changed scientists' understanding of the effects of ionizing radiation on the organ of vision. Before the Chornobyl accident, it was widely believed that the organ of vision was relatively resistant to the effects of ionizing radiation. It was thought that the most likely effect of radiation exposure was radiation cataracts, which were considered a deterministic effect. The objective of this study is
