The muscular dystrophic chicken is hypernatremic.

1. The E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1 (WWP1) gene, the mutation of which causes muscular dystrophy in chickens, is expressed not only in the pectoral muscle, but also in a number of tissues such as the kidney. Therefore, this study examined some parameters related to kidney function in muscular dystrophic (MD) chickens. 2. Plasma osmolality, Na+ and K+ concentrations, aldosterone levels, and the expression of aquaporin (AQP) 2, AQP3, and α subunits of the amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (αENaC) were analysed in the kidneys of 5-week-old MD chickens and White Leghorn (WL) chickens …

Immunity to bacterial infection in the chicken.

Bacterial infections remain important to the poultry industry both in terms of animal and public health, the latter due to the importance of poultry as a source of foodborne bacterial zoonoses such as Salmonella and Campylobacter. As such, much focus of research to the immune response to bacterial infection has been to Salmonella. In this review we will focus on how research on avian salmonellosis has developed our understanding of immunity to bacteria in the chicken from understanding the role of TLRs in recognition of bacterial pathogens, through the role of heterophils, macrophages and γδ l

Severe allergy to chicken meat.

INTRODUCTION: While allergic reactions to poultry products in the form of feathers and eggs are common, allergic reactions to chicken meat are rare. Despite the popularity of chicken in today's healthy diet, severe reactions after ingesting chicken meat are rarely described. This report describes a patient who developed chicken meat anaphylaxis without experiencing allergy to eggs or feathers. METHODS: A carefully obtained history from a 41-year-old male suggested chicken meat as the cause of his symptoms. He developed abdominal cramping, generalized urticaria, and chest tightness after inges

Axonal guidance in the chicken retina.

During retina development, ganglion cells extend their axons exclusively into the innermost tissue layer, but not into outer retina layers. In order to elucidate guiding mechanisms for axons, tissue strips of embryonic chicken retinae were explanted onto retinal cryosections (cryoculture). Ganglion cell axons originating from the explant grew preferentially on the innermost retina layer of cryosections, whereas outer tissue layers were avoided, very much as in vivo. Stereotropism, interaction with laminin of the basal lamina and axonal fasciculation did not significantly affect oriented axonal

[Facial paralysis and chicken-pox].

Ten days after chicken-pox, a 24-year old man presented with a right facial palsy without meningitis. Albumino-cytologic dissociation in CSF--not observed in two other published cases--suggests an immune-mediated process. The patient was treated by prednisone and aciclovir. The upper facial muscles remained paretic 2 months after onset.

Small-intestinal cryptosporidiosis in a chicken.

Severe small-intestinal cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in a chicken that had diarrhea, was weak, and had failed to thrive. Intestine segments also were parasitized by Eimeria sp. and bacteria. Disseminated foci of malignant lymphocytes were present in several organs. Spontaneously occurring intestinal cryptosporidiosis has not been reported in chickens.

Skeletal abnormalities in domestic chicken.

In 14,891 necropsies performed on domestic poultry during January 1976 to October 1977, two cases of skeletal abnormalities were found. One was a tarsometatarsal spur in an adult female chicken, and the other was a crossed-beak associated with microphthalmia.

Cryptosporidiosis of the bursa of Fabricius of chickens.

Light-microscope and electron-microscope studies of a coccidial organism found in the bursa of Fabricius from 3 chickens clearly established the parasite as belonging to the family Cryptosporiidae. Hyperplasia and heterophil infiltration were associated with the presence of organisms attached to the microvillus border of epithelial cells lining the plicae of the bursa of Fabricius. Although there were no clinical signs or gross lesions common to the 3 cases described, all had similar histologic lesions in the epithelium lining the bursa of Fabricius.

Exploring the chicken respiratory microbiome: a comprehensive meta-analysis of factors shaping chicken respiratory microbiota.

Poultry is the main source of meat production worldwide. The respiratory microbiota of chickens plays a critical role in avian health and disease prevention. To better understand its composition and dynamics, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis focusing on factors such as age, breed, SPF status, and respiratory organs. We collected 16S rRNA data from 13 different studies available on NCBI’s PubMed and Scopus, including data on the nasal cavity, trachea, and lungs from healthy chickens. All the data were processed using QIIME2 and then analysed together. Metadata from each study was comp…

Biologic characterization of chicken-derived H6N2 low pathogenic avian influenza viruses in chickens and ducks.

Low pathogenic avian influenza H6N2 viruses were biologically characterized by infecting chickens and ducks in order to compare adaptation of these viruses in these species. We examined the clinical signs, virus shedding, and immune response to infection in 4-wk-old white leghorn chickens and in 2-wk-old Pekin ducks. Five H6N2 viruses isolated between 2000 and 2004 from chickens in California, and one H6N2 virus isolated from chickens in New York in 1998, were given intrachoanally at a dose of 1 x 10(6) 50% embryo infectious dose per bird. Oral-pharyngeal and cloacal swabs were taken at 2, 4, …

Integration of multiple chicken retroviruses into multiple chicken herpesviruses: herpesviral gD as a common target of integration.

Integration of two different avian retroviruses, reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) and avian leukosis virus (ALV), into the genome of two different avian herpesviruses, the herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT) and Marek's disease virus (MDV), was investigated. Integration events occurred by the fourth and sixth in vitro passage of cells coinfected with REV/HVT and ALV/MDV, respectively. In order to further characterize the integration events, integrated proviruses and surrounding herpesviral genetic material were cloned and analyzed. In the REV/HVT coinfection experiment, one of the three unique integ
