[Occurrence of Chlamydia trachomatis infections in infertile women in Poland].

INTRODUCTION: Chiamydia trachomatis represents a causal factor of sexually transmitted infections (STI), the course of which is frequently asymptomatic. Chronic and relapsing infections with Chlamydia trachomatis may result in a disturbed function of oviducts, resulting in infertility. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between manifestations of asymptomatic infections with Chlamydia trachomatis and infertility among Polish women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted between 2010-2013 on 543 women in two groups. Group 1 included 190 patients (aged 23-3

[Classical and molecular methods for diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections].

INTRODUCTION: Genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted diseases in industrial countries, particularly among young people. The consequences of chlamydial infections may involve pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility. METHODS: Available tests for detection of chlamydia in men and women include culture in tissue culture cells, direct immunofluorescence test, enzyme immune assay, nucelic acid probe hibridization and polymerase chain reaction. Nucleic acid amplification tests use different ribonucleic and de

Acute and chronic urinary tract infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the causes of acute and chronic urinary tract infections and acute or silent salpingitis. Chronic or recurrent female urinary or genital tract infections with Chlamydia trachomatis have been recognised as a significant factor in the development of acute or chronic renal interstitial inflammation or increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. In most cases Chlamydia trachomatis is sexually transmitted. Moreover, it is one of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens. The current estimate is that in the United States there occur 4.5 million new infections each year.

[Direct diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis genital infections: culture or PCR?].

PCR and culturing were compared for the routine diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Two laboratories experienced in both techniques participated in the study, which included 513 specimens. Both techniques were performed on each specimen; the portion of the specimen used for PCR was divided in two, and each half was sent to one of the two laboratories, where the tests were run in a blinded fashion. The PCR primers used by the two laboratories matched different parts of the bacterial genome. PCR inhibitors were looked for in all specimens. Overall, PCR was more sensitive than culturin

[Chlamydia trachomatis serovars and the clinical picture of urogenital infections].

A total of 56 Chlamydia trachomatis strains isolated from female and male patients in the STD outpatient clinic of the Department of Dermatology, University of Heidelberg, were serotyped by means of monoclonal antibodies in an indirect immunofluorescence test. The most prevalent serovar was serovar E, with 35.7%, followed by serovar D, with 28.6%, and serovar F, with 26.8%. No double or multiple infections with different C. trachomatis serovars were found. The first epidemiological study of C. trachomatis serovars in Germany shows that the distribution of distinct serovars is not essentially d

Screening for cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infections in two Dutch populations.

Endocervical cultures for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae were taken from 492 women attending an outpatient clinic for sexually transmitted diseases (group I) and 560 women seeking legal abortion (group II). Possible risk factors for C trachomatis infection were evaluated by multivariate analysis. The prevalence rates for C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae were 7.3% and 2.5% in group I and 9.4% and 0.4% in group II. From multivariate analysis it was found that age (p less than 0.01), number of sexual partners (p less than 0.01), abnormal vaginal discharge (p less than 0.01), and e

Childhood vaginal infections: association of Chlamydia trachomatis with sexual contact.

To determine whether infections with Chlamydia trachomatis in children were significantly associated with previous sexual contact, we studied 124 female children ages 1 through 12 years with previous sexual contact and 90 female children without previous sexual contact. Vaginal, pharyngeal and rectal cultures for C. trachomatis were performed. Ten children with previous sexual contact and none without previous sexual contact had vaginal infections (P = 0.022, chi square test with 2 degrees of freedom). Rectal infections (three) and pharyngeal infections (two) were too few to relate statistical

Urinary tract infection and Chlamydia infection in adolescent females.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine whether clinical or laboratory findings could distinguish Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) from urinary tract infection (UTI) among adolescent females in whom providers tested for both. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: A laboratory database at an urban teen health center was reviewed to identify females who had both urine culture and ligase chain reaction (LCR) test for CT ordered at the same visit. History and physical findings were abstracted from the medical record. There were 81 visits with retrievable laboratory results and chart documentation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:

Effect of Time of Day of Infection on Chlamydia Infectivity and Pathogenesis.

Genital chlamydia infection in women causes complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and tubal factor infertility, but it is unclear why some women are more susceptible than others. Possible factors, such as time of day of chlamydia infection on chlamydial pathogenesis has not been determined. We hypothesised that infections during the day, will cause increased complications compared to infections at night. Mice placed under normal 12:12 light: dark (LD) cycle were infected intravaginally with Chlamydia muridarum either at zeitgeber time 3, ZT3 and ZT15. Infectivity was monitored by p

Captive Psittacines with Chlamydia avium Infection.

Avian chlamydiosis is an infection caused by obligate intracellular, gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Chlamydiaceae family. Birds can be hosts of several Chlamydia species, including Chlamydia avium, which has only been detected in pigeons and psittacine birds. In this study, depression, respiratory distress, and mortality were noted among psittacines belonging to a large aviary with 35 different avian species. On the basis of immunohistochemistry and PCR testing, chlamydiosis was diagnosed in affected birds. Gross and histopathologic lesions were mainly observed in the spleen and gastr

Lycopene Inhibits Propagation of Chlamydia Infection.

Chlamydiaceae is a family of obligate intracellular pathogenic bacteria with similar developmental cycles and cell biology responsible for a wide range of diseases in different hosts including genital and eye inflammatory diseases, arthritis, and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. In the present paper, we report that lycopene, one of the main dietary carotenoids, which is present in tomato and some other fruits, has a strong inhibitory effect on C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae infections in alveolar macrophages. This finding was documented by both immunofluor

The inflammasome: Friend or foe in Chlamydia infection?

In this issue of the Biomedical Journal, we take a look at the still somewhat perplexing role of the inflammasome in Chlamydia infection. We also highlight findings suggesting a link between structural changes to arteries in the brain and the onset of depression. Finally, we learn about some of the implications of co-morbidity between diabetes and infectious diseases.

[Current aspects of Chlamydia trachomatis infection].

The number of detection and diagnosis of urogenital infections with Chlamydia trachomatis is increasing among both men and women. Three-quarters involve young people between 15 and 24 years. Infection, often asymptomatic, is more common in women. It is necessary to identify it to avoid complications. The number of rectal lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is also growing. The affected patients are homo/bisexuel men frequently co-infected with HIV. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are the tests of choice to the diagnosis of C. trachomatis infection regardless of the clinical situation. Most

An unusual manifestation of a neonatal Chlamydia infection.

A 25-day-old boy was admitted to hospital because of pneumonia and additionally developed symptoms of encephalitis. The immune fluorescence test for Chlamydia trachomatis in tracheal fluids was positive. Furthermore, ligase chain reaction for C trachomatis was positive in the cerebrospinal fluid. The antibiotic regimen was changed to erythromycin intravenously. C trachomatis encephalitis is rare in neonates and may result from a defect in the alternative pathway of complement activation which was the case in this patient.
