The synthesis, both in vivo and in vitro, of various steroid hormones in the adrenals, testes and ovaries of rats was compared at various stages of vitamin A deficiency with the corresponding pair-fed controls. 2. I modified a procedure for screening urine specimens for evidence of drug abuse, to permit direct use of commercially available ion-exchange papers in hemagglutination-inhibition assay for drug detection. Small circles punched out of the papers, which previously had been impregnated with drug-containing urine, were used in the detection step, leaving the remainder of the specimens on paper available for confirmatory analyses. The procedure is useful in screening for the presence of opiates, methadone, and (or) barbiturates.

The ovarian and peritoneal mesothelium are believed to derive from the same embryonal coelomic epithelium. Neoplastic proliferation of these epithelia is sometimes grossly and histologically similar. Recently estrogen receptors have been identified in gynecologic neoplasms. Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in pterygium tissues were analyzed and the results were compared with those in the normal human conjunctiva. A marked difference in the GAG composition was found: 78% of the total hexosamines of GAG from pterygium was glucosamine, whereas 98% of those of the conjunctiva was galactosamine.
