Exposure to chromium (VI) (250, 500 and 750 ppm as potassium dichromate) via drinking water pregestationally in rats revealed embryo- and fetotoxic effects in the form of a significant reduction in the number of implantations and number of fetuses. An increase in the number of resorptions, pre-implantation and post-implantation loss in chromium (VI)-treated mothers was also observed. No significant visceral abnormality was found. A significant increase in sub-dermal hemorrhagic patches on thoracic and abdominal areas was found. Skeletal abnormality in the form of reduced ossification in pariet…

Systemic absorption of metal or metallic salts from dental and orthopedic surgical implants can produce a cutaneous allergic dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Mercury, nickel and cobalt are the most common metals to elicit such systemic allergic reactions from chronic internal exposure. A case is presented of a generalized eczematoid dermatitis apparently caused by allergy to chromium liberated from a metal dental plate.

Chromium is required for maintenance of normal glucose tolerance. After complete bowel resection and five months of total parenteral nutrition, severe glucose intolerance, weight loss, and a metabolic encephalopathy-like confusional state developed in a patient. Serum chromium levels were at the lowest normal level. Supplementation of 150 microgram of chromium per day reversed the glucose intolerance, reduced insulin requirements, and resulted in weight gain and the disappearance of encephalopathy. The low levels of chromium and response to chromium supplementation suggest that chromium defici…

The investigations confirmed the known fact that for skin tests larger amounts of trivalent chromium compounds are necessary than those of potassium dichromate. It was also observed that some patients react to relatively higher Cr VI and lower Cr III concentrations and others vice versa. Chromium nitrate and chloride release and that of potassium dichromate was determined and converted to the chromium content in the concentrations used for skin tests. It was found that Cr III compounds cannot be used for skin tests in a 0,5% concentration if only because they are released in undeterminable amo…

The reductions of K2Cr2O7 by catecholamines, DOPA, DOPA-beta,beta-d2, N-acetyl-DOPA, alpha-methyl-DOPA, dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, catechol, 1,2-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA), and 4-tert-butylcatechol (TBC), produce a number of Cr(V) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals. These species are of interest in relation to the potential role of oxidized proteins and amino acids in Cr-induced cancers. With excess organic ligand, all of the substrates yield Cr species with signals at g(iso) approximately 1.972 (Aiso(53Cr) > 23.9 x 10(-4) cm(-1)). These are similar to signals reported p

The first synthesis and characterization of Cr(V) complexes of non-sulfur-containing amino acids are reported. The reduction of Cr(VI) in methanol in the presence of amino acids glycine, alanine, and 2-amino-2-methylpropanoic acid (alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, Aib) yielded several Cr(V) EPR signals. For the reaction involving glycine, the only Cr(V) EPR signals detected were those of the Cr(V)-intermediate methanol complexes, which were also observed in the absence of amino acids. The reaction involving alanine yielded one Cr(V) signal with a g(iso) value of 1.9754 (a(iso) = 4.88 x 10(-4) cm(-1

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a persistent, highly toxic, and bioaccumulative contaminant that poses serious risks to soil ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the phytoremediation potential of Pennisetum pedicellatum and characterized chromium-associated rhizospheric bacteria in Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. A 60-day greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using four Cr(VI) treatments: control (T0), 25 mg kg⁻1 (T1), 50 mg kg⁻1 (T2), and 100 mg kg⁻1 (T3). Plant and soil samples were collected at 15-day intervals to evaluate growth, biomass, biochemical responses, and chromium acc…

In this paper, the effects of processing parameters and constituents of treating-agent on the presence of hazardous hexavalent chromium on trivalent chromium conversion coating were studied. Results showed that shorter immersion time, lower bath pH value as well as lower working and baking temperatures retarded the presence of hexavalent chromium. In addition, the concentration of hexavalent chromium on conversion coatings prepared by the oxalic acid treating-agent was far greater than those on conversion coatings prepared by formic acid and acetic acid treating-agents. Results also indicated …

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) provides an environmentally green technique to decontaminate chromium species from solid matrices using supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (ScCO2). Methanol and a small amount of water were found to significantly improve the extraction efficiency. The fluorinated chelating agent lithium bis(trifluoroethyl)-dithiocarbamate (LiFDDC) was effective in removing Cr ions in methanol-modified CO2 via in situ chelation/SFE technique. This paper indicates that the extraction efficiencies of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from solid matrices can be greatly increased to more than …

Cr(VI) is widely used in industry and often large quantities have been accidently or due to lack of precautions released at the environment. The presence of high concentrations of Cr(VI) in waste streams causes concern due to its toxicity and solubility. However the Cr(III) is a useful micronutrient in human diet. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is a promising technology for a clean environment. Polyphenols are commonly found in plants and they are considered as strong natural antioxidants. In this study the reduction of hexavalent to trivalent chromium using gallic acid (GA), a polyhydroxy…

Single crystals of the title compound, Pb(2)CrF(7), were obtained by solid-state reaction. The monoclinic structure is isotypic with Pb(2)RhF(7) and is built up of CrF(6) (3-) octa-hedra isolated from each other, inserted in a fluorite-related matrix of PbF(6) distorted octa-hedra, and PbF(8) square anti-prisms sharing edges and corners. The seventh F atom is 'independent', connected only to three Pb atoms within FPb(3) triangles, sharing an edge and building an almost planar Pb(4)F(2) unit, so that the formula can alternatively be written as Pb(2)F(CrF(6)).

Metal ion complexes provide flexible paramagnetic centers that may be used to define intermolecular contacts in a variety of solution phase environments because both the charge and electronic relaxation properties of the complex may be varied. For most complex ions, there are several proton equilibria that may change the effective charge on the complex as a function of pH which in turn affects the efficacy of application for defining the electrostatic surfaces of co-solute molecules. We report here spectrophotometric and nuclear spin relaxation studies on aqueous solutions of chromium(III) com…

Oxochromium(V) complexes of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole and brominated derivatives oxygenate substrates (triphenylphosphine and norbornene) with concomitant production of chromium(III). Regeneration of CrVO by reaction of dioxygen with CrIII completes an aerobic catalytic cycle, with very large solvent effects; in acetonitrile, rapid initial turnovers observed initially are shut down by formation of CrIVO, while in toluene, THF, and methanol, relatively slow reactions are further inhibited by product formation.

Galvanic sludge is classified as a hazardous waste and incineration is one of the techniques used for its treatment. The aim of this work is to study the thermal behavior of a galvanic sludge which contains only chromium as a restriction metal. Simultaneous DTA/TG coupled with mass spectrometer tests were performed to characterize the thermal behavior of the sludge. Besides thermal analysis, sludge samples were heated in a specially designed furnace and these samples were submitted to X-ray diffraction. Vapor from the heated sludge was condensed and the particles were analyzed by EDS microprob…

This paper describes continuous and fed-batch fermentation protocols for enhanced production of organically bound chromium yeast. During continuous fermentation, several inorganic chromium compounds were evaluated. Sodium chromate demonstrated the best chromium incorporation into yeast biomass without any precipitation in the fermentation medium. During fed-batch fermentation, several sodium chromate concentrations were evaluated at 1.1, 3.5, 5.9, 7.1, 8.3, and 10.8 g/L with continuous or single-dose addition. For single-dose addition of sodium chromate, some precipitation was observed for all…

Although chromium and compounds containing it have been recognized as having potential severe adverse effects on health for more than 160 years, understanding of the systemic toxicology and true hazard of these compounds is still not complete. A review of the current state of knowledge is attempted in this paper, with appropriate attention given to the complications of multiple valence states and solubility. Selected chromium compounds, particularly hexavalent ones, are carcinogens, corrosives, delayed contact sensitizers, and have the kidney as their primary target organ. But chromium is also…

This study describes investigations on the possible mechanisms involved in the transfer of Cr from the dialysate to the blood during peritoneal dialysis. The ability of Cr(III) compounds to penetrate across a membrane at physiological pH seems rather questionable, as it is well known that Cr(III) tends to form polymeric chains. Therefore, a systematic study was undertaken to describe the pathways involved in this transport. The characteristics during 'in vitro' dialysis were compared to the behaviour of Cr during acute 'in vivo' experiments on anesthetized rabbits. It appeared that lactate, a
