Tilapia Lake Virus was not detected in non-tilapine species within tilapia polyculture systems of Bangladesh.

Sixteen countries, including Bangladesh, have reported the presence of tilapia lake virus (TiLV), an emerging tilapia pathogen. Fish polyculture is a common farming practice in Bangladesh. Some unusual mortalities reported in species co-cultivated with TiLV-infected tilapia led us to investigate whether any of the co-cultivated species would also test positive for TiLV and whether they were susceptible to TiLV infection under controlled laboratory experiments. Using 183 samples obtained from 15 farms in six districts across Bangladesh, we determined that 20% of the farms tested positive for Ti

Environmentally relevant pesticides induce biochemical changes in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

The high demand for food consequently increases the entry of agricultural residues into water resources, and this phenomenon can affect non-target organisms in different ways. Environmentally relevant pesticide effects (per se or in combinations) are scarce in the scientific literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate: (1) the presence of pesticide residues in an important Brazilian source of water supply and power generation (Jacuí river), during 1 year of monitoring. (2) in a laboratory study verify the effects of the most frequently, herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide

Ascocotyle (A.) nunezae n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) from Yucatan, Mexico.

A new heterophyid species, Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) nunezae n. sp., is described from adults found in the intestine of naturally infected her … of this subgenus by the presence of long intestinal ceca reaching posterior to the ventral sucker. Cichlids of the genus Cichlasoma from cenotes, lakes, and the river Río Hondo in the Yucatan Peninsula were natural second intermediate hosts of A. (A.) nunezae, with metacercariae encysted on their gills. Cichlasoma meeki (Brind) was the most heavily infect …

DNA methylation of the endothelin receptor B makes blue fish yellow.

Animal pigmentation is essential for concealment and communication in nature. Though selection acts on the phenotypes of an organism, these traits are often resolved to genes that shape pigmentation in populations. In contrast, plasticity in coloration can occur within individuals in response to ambient environmental changes that act through integrative processes. It is well known that some animals often change color to match their visual ecology. The cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, can switch between robust blue and yellow body morphs in the lab and the wild. Different colors result from

Craniofacial divergence and ongoing adaptation via the hedgehog pathway.

Adaptive variation in craniofacial structure contributes to resource specialization and speciation, but the genetic loci that underlie craniofacial adaptation remain unknown. Here we show that alleles of the hedgehog pathway receptor Patched1 (Ptch1) gene are responsible for adaptive variation in the shape of the lower jaw both within and among genera of Lake Malawi cichlid fish. The evolutionarily derived allele of Ptch1 reduces the length of the retroarticular (RA) process of the lower jaw, a change predicted to increase speed of jaw rotation for improved suction-feeding. The alternate allel

Influence of hypergravity on fish inner ear otoliths: II. Incorporation of calcium and kinetotic behaviour.

Larval siblings of cichlid fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) were subjected to hypergravity (hg; 3 g, 14 days) during development. Following the transfer to 1 g (i.e., stopping the centrifuge) they were separated into normally and kinetotically swimming individuals (the latter performed spinning movements). During hg, the animals were maintained in aquarium water containing alizarin-complexone (AC), a fluorescent calcium tracer. Densitometric measurements of AC uptake into inner ear otoliths (optical density of AC/micrometers2) revealed that the kinetotic individuals had incorporated significantl

Autosomal dominant inheritance with sex-limited manifestation: An unusual mode of transmission in humans and animals.

Autosomal dominant, sex-limited inheritance is a distinct mode of transmission that should not be conflated with X-linked inheritance. From … omenon that has extensively been studied in various species such as butterflies, damselflies, fish (cichlids), and birds. Hence, at this point in time, it seems likely that other human examples of this mode of inheritance have previously been reported or will be published in the future.

Molecular Plasticity in Animal Pigmentation: Emerging Processes Underlying Color Changes.

Animal coloration has been rigorously studied and has provided morphological implications for fitness with influences over social behavior, … asticity to gene regulation as it relates to chromatophore function. Lastly, I will present African cichlids as emerging models for the study of pigmentation and molecular plasticity for animal color changes. I posit that these processes, in a dialog with environmental stimuli, are important regulators of variation and the selective advantages that accompa …

Deficiency of zebrafish fgf20a results in aberrant skull remodeling that mimics both human cranial disease and evolutionarily important fish skull morphologies.

The processes that direct skull remodeling are of interest to both human-oriented studies of cranial dysplasia and evolutionary studies of s … n repeatedly in several highly successful radiations (e.g., damselfishes and East-African rift-lake cichlids). Our results offer the dob/fgf20a mutant as an experimentally tractable model with which to examine post-embryonic skull development as it relates to human disease and vertebrate evolution.

Dispersal Across Headwaters Determines Fish Population Structure Between Interdigitating River Systems in the Guiana Shield Highlands.

Riverine aquatic species primarily occupy the dendritic networks that define river basins, and population-structure models for riverine taxa, including freshwater fishes, generally assume strictly longitudinal dispersal within these networks. River configurations, however, are dynamic: hydrologic connections change seasonally and over geologic time, potentially enabling out-of-network dispersal, a process that remains poorly studied. Because such dispersal violates key assumptions of existing models, its prevalence may require the development of new frameworks for understanding riverine popula

Environmental control of prolactin synthesis in the teleost fish Oreochromis (formerly Sarotherodon) mossambicus.

In the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus prolactin cell activity is inversely related to the osmolarity and the Ca2+ concentration of the ambient water. Prolactin cell activity was estimated, at the end of a 3-week experimental period, by determination of the rate of prolactin synthesis during incubation of the rostral parts of the pituitary gland, in the presence of [3H]lysine. Since the secretory activity of isolated prolactin cells is known to be inversely related to the osmolarity of the incubation medium, the possibility was investigated that the effects of changes in ionic composition

Role of gonadal soma-derived growth factor (gsdf) on sex-differentiation in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

Molecular sex differentiation is regulated by complex transcriptional dynamics. In Nile tilapia, ovarian differentiation requires the synthesis of estradiol-17β (E2), in which forkhead box L2 (foxl2) and ovarian aromatase (cytochrome P450, family 19, subfamily A, polypeptide 1a; cyp19a1a) play critical roles, whereas gonadal soma-derived growth factor (gsdf) and doublesex and mab-3-related transcription factor 1 (dmrt1) are implicated in testicular differentiation. During the early phase of molecular sex differentiation, gsdf mRNA is expressed to a significantly higher degree in the undifferen

Histomorphological and morphometric characterization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) ovaries, with emphasis on processes and structures related to the ovarian regressing phase.

Understanding fish reproductive characteristics, specifically ovarian development and regression, is essential for optimizing the performance of commercially important species like Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). This study characterizes the histomorphological modifications associated with follicular atresia and post-ovulatory complexes (POCs) during the ovarian regressing phase. Genetically improved (GIFT-type) female fish were monitored over a 60-day reproductive management period, with sequential sampling (G0-G7, n = 20) performed before and after de-mating. Ovaries were evaluated via

Isolation and identification of Streptococcus agalactiae in cage-cultured green chromide Etroplus suratensis in Kerala, India.

Streptococcus agalactiae is one of the main aetiological agents in large-scale mortalities of tilapia, having caused major economic losses to the aquaculture industry in recent years. This study describes the isolation and identification of the bacteria from cage-cultured Etroplus suratensis that experienced moderate to severe mortalities in Kerala, India. Gram-positive, catalase-negative S. agalactiae was identified from brain, eye and liver of the fish by antigen grouping and 16S rDNA sequencing. Multiplex PCR confirmed that the isolate belonged to capsular serotype Ia. Antibiotic susceptibi

Transcriptomic responses of saline-adapted Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to rearing in both saline and freshwater.

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is an important species for global aquaculture. Recently, a single genetic line of Nile tilapia was developed using estimated breeding values (EBVs) for body weight under moderately saline water that showed significant improvement in growth performance. To explore the molecular mechanisms underlying this enhanced growth capacity, RNA-Seq was used to profile differences in gene expression in the liver and pituitary gland of high- and low-growth performance families of male Nile tilapia progeny, reared in either saline or freshwater environments. Osmoregulatory profiles and gill histological changes in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to lambda-cyhalothrin.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that mimics the structure and insecticidal properties of pyrethrin, a natural insecticide derived from chrysanthemums. In fish, it disrupts the nervous system, causing motor paralysis and several other alterations associated with varying levels of mortality. This study aimed to evaluate osmoregulatory responses and histological changes in the gills of Oreochromis niloticus chronically exposed to a sublethal dosage (0.86 μg/L) of lambda-cyhalothrin. The mean serum values for Na2+, K+, Cl-, Ca2+, pH, lactate, H+, HCO3, and glucose along to degree of t
