BACKGROUND: Several sub-Saharan African countries plan to scale-up infant male circumcision (IMC) for cost-efficient HIV prevention. Little data exist about the safety of IMC in East and southern Africa. We calculated adverse event (AE) rate and risks for AEs associated with introduction of IMC services at five government health facilities in western Kenya.
METHODS: AE data were analyzed for IMC procedures performed between September, 2009 and November, 2011. Healthy infants aged ≤ 2 months and weighing ≥ 2.5 kg were eligible for IMC. Following parental consent, trained clinicians provided IM

OBJECTIVE: Male circumcision services have expanded throughout Africa as part of a long-term HIV prevention strategy. We assessed the effect of type of service provider (formal and informal) and hygiene practices on circumcision-related morbidities in rural Ghana.
METHODS: Population-based, cross-sectional study conducted between May and December 2012 involving 2850 circumcised infant males aged under 12 weeks. Multivariable logistic regression models were adjusted for maternal age, maternal education, income, birthweight and site of circumcision.
RESULTS: A total of 2850 (90.7%) infant male

In the midst of scaling up voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) in Kenya, there is concern that men do not adequately understand that circumcision provides only partial protection against HIV. The study goal was to determine men's understanding of partial protection, perceptions of HIV risk before and after VMMC and use of protective measures following VMMC. In-depth interviews with 44 men aged 18-39 years recently circumcised or planning to undergo VMMC were conducted in two urban and rural districts in Nyanza Province, Kenya. Participants described partial protection as the need to con

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence has confirmed that circumcision can be performed as a preventive strategy for HIV and early infant male circumcision (EIMC) is regarded to be safer than circumcision in adulthood; however, limited data are available in the literature about EIMC in China. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine the willingness and attitudes of Chinese parents on newborn male circumcision so as to provide data for exploring the feasibility of implementing EIMC as an HIV prevention strategy in China.
METHODS: Simple random sampling was used to draw participants from par

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Circumcision is one of the most commonly performed procedures since ancient times for different indications. Following circumcision, various complications can happen including urethro-cutaneous fistula(UCF). The urethro-cutaneous fistula usually occurs ventrally, and our case is the first from Ethiopia to report dorsal UCF. To our knowledge, there are only two case reports with dorsal UCF.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 13-year-old male child for whom UCF repair was done in June 2023, after presenting with a urine leak from the dorsal side of the penis a

OBJECTIVE: To conduct the first systematic review critically examining evidence on whether early male circumcision has short- and long-term adverse psychological effects.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: Twenty-four studies with original data met the inclusion criteria. These comprised 11,173 total males, 4340 circumcised in infancy and 6908 uncircumcised. Nineteen were rated 1+, 2++ or 2+, and 5 were rated 2- by SIGN criteria. Neonatal circumcision, particularly without anesthetic, increased vaccination pain response, but had little

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the long term adverse events profile at least a year after safe male circumcision.
RESULTS: A cohort study, investigating patients who had undergone a non surgical circumcision procedure called Prepex. The study variables included scar appearance and sexual experiences. Clients were contacted for a phone interview and data were collected using a questionnaire, for some, a physical examination was done. We obtained ethical committee approval. Data from 304 out of a possible 625 men were analyzed, the rest was lost to follow up. The follow

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and spontaneous resolution of congenital hydrocele diagnosed in male neonates who underwent circumcision at our centre.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All male neonates presented for circumcision at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria between January 2002 and December 2006 were examined for the presence of hydrocele. Those diagnosed with this condition were recruited and followed up in a surgical outpatient clinic for 2 years. The number of cases of spontaneous resolution and age at which this occurred were documented on a structured pr

Male circumcision is an accepted HIV prevention measure in high-incidence countries and is now part of global HIV prevention programs. We interviewed 63 mothers at four major hospitals in Bunia, North-Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between February and March 2014, about their circumcision practices for their sons, including reasons and timing. All participants indicated that their son's father was circumcised and that they have or will circumcise their son. The most common reason given was adherence to social norms. Only 12.7% mentioned prevention of sexually transmitted infections

BACKGROUND: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a strategy used to try to limit new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections, as it has the potential to reduce HIV and/or AIDS transmission from women to men by up to 60%. However, in spite of efforts by the Ministry of Health and Social Services, only a few men in Namibia have been circumcised. The objective of this study was to explore and describe the facilitators of, and barriers to, medical male circumcision for HIV prevention in Kavango East, Namibia.
METHODS: A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design wa

BACKGROUND: The literature regarding the quality of the sex life in adult males after circumcision, due to phimosis, is scarce and sometimes contrasting. This could be due to comparisons of a nonhomogeneous distribution of the clinical variables of men who have undergone circumcision.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the distribution of the clinical variables in the adult male population who had circumcision for phimosis, and to propose a clinical classification of the phimosis to characterize it in adult males in more homogeneous sub-groups for the common clinical varia

Circumcision is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Its complication rate is extremely low when performed by a trained surgeon, but the majority of circumcisions done for religious reasons in India, Africa, and Arab states are performed by traditional practitioners1 and have a high complication rate. We present the case of five-year-old boy who developed gangrene of the glans requiring amputation after such a procedure.

The World Health Organization endorsed voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) in 2007 as an effective method to provide partial protection against heterosexual female-to-male transmission of HIV in regions with high rates of such transmission, and where uptake of VMMC is low. Qualitative research conducted in east and southern Africa has focused on assessing acceptability, barriers to uptake of VMMC and the likelihood of VMMC increasing men's adoption of risky sexual behaviours. Less researched, however, have been the perceptions of women and sexual minorities towards VMMC, even though the

BACKGROUND: Three trials have demonstrated the prophylactic effect of male circumcision (MC) for HIV acquisition among heterosexuals, and MC interventions are underway throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Similar efforts for men who have sex with men (MSM) are stymied by the potential for circumcised MSM to acquire HIV easily through receptive sex and transmit easily through insertive sex. Existing work suggests that MC for MSM should reach its maximum potential in settings where sexual role segregation is historically high and relatively stable across the lifecourse; HIV incidence among MSM is high

BACKGROUND: One-third of the world's men are circumcised, but little is known about possible sexual consequences of male circumcision. In Denmark (~5% circumcised), we examined associations of male circumcision with a range of sexual measures in both sexes.
METHODS: Participants in a national health survey (n = 5552) provided information about their own (men) or their spouse's (women) circumcision status and details about their sex lives. Logistic regression-derived odds ratios (ORs) measured associations of circumcision status with sexual experiences and current difficulties with sexual desi

Ambiguous genitalia, a rare condition involving external genitalia that do not conform to typical male or female presentations, is often indicative of disorders of sexual development (DSD). A 12-year-old child from Somalia was initially assigned female due to ambiguous genitalia, including an enlarged clitoral structure and scrotal sac that the family mistakenly thought was a labia majora. This led to an inappropriate circumcision, mistaking the penis for a clitoris. The child was raised as female until secondary male sexual characteristics appeared at age 11, prompting medical evaluation. Dia

BACKGROUND: As countries scale up adult voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention, they are looking ahead to long term sustainable strategies, including introduction of early infant male circumcision (EIMC). Although a number of devices for EIMC are prequalified by the World Health Organization, evaluation of additional devices can provide policy-makers and clinicians the information required to make informed decisions. We undertook a field evaluation of the safety and acceptability of the AccuCirc device in Kisumu County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Assessing safety outcomes is critical to inform optimal scale-up of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs. Clinical trials demonstrated adverse event (AE) rates from 1.5 to 8 %, but we have limited data on AEs from VMMC programs.
METHODS: A group problem-solving, quality improvement (QI) project involving retrospective chart audits, case-conference AE classification, and provider training was conducted at a VMMC clinic in Malawi. For each identified potential AE, the timing, assessment, treatment, and resolution was recorded, then a clinical team classified each even

BACKGROUND: Circumcision devices can facilitate adult voluntary medical male circumcision programs for HIV prevention. The World Health Organization recommends field studies to confirm the safety of devices in local settings.
METHODS: We evaluated the safety of the ShangRing device in routine service delivery by measuring adverse event (AE) rates overall and by HIV status. We enrolled men aged 18-54 years and scheduled them for 2 post-circumcision follow-up visits at day 7 for device removal and days 35-42. Men were examined to document AEs and healing and to ascertain client acceptability. P
