Are Citric Acid-Iron II Complexes True Chelates or Just Physical Mixtures and How to Prove This?

Although mineral chelates are widely produced to be used as food fortifiers, the proof that these complexes are chelates is still missing. In our present work, iron II complexes using citric acid in different ratios are produced, and the occurrence of chelation is investigated along with its behavior according to a molar ratio between the ligand and the mineral. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) were used for a non-structur…

Neurokinin 1 and 2 receptors are involved in PGE2- and citric acid-induced cough and ventilatory responses.

Exposure to aerosolized citric acid (CA, 150 mM) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2, 0.43 mM) for 10 min in guinea pigs reportedly produces the distinct cough patterns (Type I vs. II) and ventilatory responses (long-lasting hyperventilation vs. brief tachypnea) even though triggering the same cough numbers. Type I and II coughs are primarily mediated by activation of TRPV1 and EP3 receptors (a PGE2 receptor) of vagal C-fibers respectively. Substance P (SP) and neurokinin A (NKA) released by vagal pulmonary sensory fibers peripherally are capable of affecting CA-induced cough and ventilation via prefer…

HLA class I depletion by citric acid, and irradiation of apheresis platelets for transfusion of refractory patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients can form antibodies to foreign human leukocyte antigen (HLA) Class I antigens after exposure to allogeneic cells. These anti-HLA class I antibodies can bind transfused platelets (PLTs) and mediate their destruction, thus leading to PLT refractoriness. Patients with PLT refractoriness need HLA-matched PLTs, which require expensive HLA typing of donors, antibody analyses of patient sera and/or crossmatching. An alternative approach is to reduce PLT HLA Class I expression using a brief incubation in citric acid on ice at low pH. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Apheresis PLT concentra…

Development and virucidal activity of a novel alcohol-based hand disinfectant supplemented with urea and citric acid.

BACKGROUND: Hand disinfectants are important for the prevention of virus transmission in the health care system and environment. The development of broad antiviral spectrum hand disinfectants with activity against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses is limited due to a small number of permissible active ingredients able to inactivate viruses. METHODS: A new hand disinfectant was developed based upon 69.39 % w/w ethanol and 3.69 % w/w 2-propanol. Different amounts of citric acid and urea were added in order to create a virucidal claim against poliovirus (PV), adenovirus type 5 (AdV) and polyom…

Cough reflex induced by microinjection of citric acid into the larynx of guinea pigs: new coughing model.

We developed a new coughing model that evoked coughs by microinjection of citric acid into the larynx in unanesthetized unrestrained guinea pigs; additionally, we recorded synchronous sounds and waveforms of coughing utilizing built-in microphones and a whole body plethysmograph. The coughing model was able to distinguish a coughing response from other expiratory responses, such as an expiratory reflex or a sigh, by examining the waveform of the expiratory response and the existence of sound. It was not necessary to distinguish a cough from a sneeze, since the administration site was restricte…

Treatment of localized gingival recessions with coronally displaced flaps and citric acid. An experimental study in the dog.

The present study was designed to examine the effect of citric acid conditioning on the result of healing following treatment of localized gingival recessions with coronally displaced flaps. In 3 beagle dogs, localized gingival recessions were surgically created at the buccal surfaces of canines, premolars and molars. All experimental sites were allowed to accumulate plaque for a period of 6 months. Following preparation of notches in the buccal root surfaces at the level of the gingival margin, buccal and lingual mucoperiosteal flaps were raised. The exposed portion of the root surfaces was s…

A surgical procedure for the treatment of localized gingival recession in conjunction with root surface citric acid conditioning.

A total of 9 teeth were treated with a free gingival graft followed by a coronally positioned flap in conjunction with conditioning of the root surface with citric acid. The grafting procedure was done 2 weeks after the subjects could perform adequate plaque control. Thirty days after grafting, a mucoperiosteal flap was raised. The root surface was thoroughly planed and conditioned with citric acid at pH 1.0, and the flap was then positioned coronally. Clinical measurements of the amount of recession, sulcus depth, and keratinized gingiva were taken preoperatively, and at 30 and 60 days after …

Virus-Dependent Relative Contributions of Citric Acid and Benzalkonium Chloride to the Virucidal Efficacy of Combination Disinfectants.

Chemical disinfectants used in livestock production commonly combine citric acid (CA) and benzalkonium chloride (BZK), yet the respective contributions of these active ingredients to virucidal efficacy remain poorly understood. This study quantified the relative contributions of CA and BZK against the non-enveloped foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and the enveloped avian influenza virus (AIV). Virucidal efficacy was evaluated using a full-factorial design comprising six CA concentrations and six BZK concentrations at contact times of 3 and 30 min. Log reduction values (LRVs) were analyzed b…

Combining polyesters of citric and azelaic acids to obtain potential topical application biomaterials with antimicrobial activity.

Biomaterials with antimicrobial properties are a key research area due to the increasing threat of infections and the growing resistance of microorganisms to existing antibiotics. The aim of the study was to produce thermally cross-linked polymer films based on poly(1,5-pentanediol azelate) and poly(1,4-butanediol citrate) with antimicrobial activity for medical applications. Well-formed, cross-linked, flexible materials differing in appearance depending on the conditions of the cross-linking process were obtained. In general, a lower cross-linking temperature was found to promote less brittle

Citric acid is more effective than sodium thiosulfate in chelating calcium in a dissolution model of calcinosis.

Calcinosis cutis affects 20-40% of patients with systemic sclerosis. This study tests the hypothesis that calcium-chelating polycarboxylic acids can induce calcium dissolution without skin toxicity or irritancy. We compared citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to sodium thiosulfate (STS) for their ability to chelate calcium in vitro using a pharmaceutical dissolution model of calcinosis (hydroxyapatite (HAp) tablet), prior to evaluation of toxicity and irritancy in 2D in vitro skin models. Resultant data was used to predict therapeutic concentrations for application in a…

Effects of a commercial whitening toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide and citric acid on dentin abrasion and erosion.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen peroxide (HP) and citric acid (CA), key contributors to toothpaste acidity, can lead to dental loss. This study aimed to compare the amount of abrasion or loss of dentin based on pH, buffering, and concentration of HP and CA in commercial and experimental toothpastes after toothbrushing or immersion. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were randomly assigned to nine solutions. The prepared solutions included two commercial toothpastes (whitening toothpaste [WT] with HP and CA; conventional toothpaste [CT] without HP and CA), reference slurry (RS), two CA solutions (1.92%, CA…

Production of tartrates by cyanide-mediated dimerization of glyoxylate: a potential abiotic pathway to the citric acid cycle.

An abiotic formation of meso- and DL-tartrates in 80% yield via the cyanide-catalyzed dimerization of glyoxylate under alkaline conditions is demonstrated. A detailed mechanism for this conversion is proposed, supported by NMR evidence and (13)C-labeled reactions. Simple dehydration of tartrates to oxaloacetate and an ensuing decarboxylation to form pyruvate are known processes that provide a ready feedstock for entry into the citric acid cycle. While glyoxylate and high hydroxide concentration are atypical in the prebiotic literature, there is evidence for natural, abiotic availability of eac…

Effect of citric acid and various concentrations of fibronectin on healing following periodontal flap surgery in dogs.

The purpose of this histologic and histometric study was to examine the effect of citric acid and increasing concentrations of fibronectin on new connective tissue attachment following periodontal flap surgery. Full thickness, mucoperiosteal flaps were elevated in six healthy mongrel dogs. Two to 3 mm of alveolar bone were removed along the buccal aspect of the teeth in the mandible and into the interproximal areas of each surgical site. Cementum was removed from the exposed root surfaces and reference notches were inscribed into the roots at the margin of the recontoured bone. Citric acid, pH…

Streptococcus agalactiae imports spermidine by a member of the amino acid/polyamine antiporter family to endure citric acid stress at the vaginal pH.

Polyamines bind to various cellular components, such as nucleic acids, phospholipids, proteins and nucleotides. They are involved in the vir … Escherichia coli. We found that sak_1604 is overexpressed in the presence of spermidine and during citric acid stress at the vaginal pH, but not during lactic acid or HCl stresses at the same pH or during a sodium citrate stress at pH 7.4. Dihydrogen citrate is the predominant form of citric acid at pH 4.0. Using a deletion mutant, we proved that SAK_1604 is …

Enhanced redox degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons by the Fe(II)-catalyzed calcium peroxide system in the presence of formic acid and citric acid.

Two carboxylic acids (formic acid (FA) and citric acid (CIT)) enhanced the Fenton process using Fe(II)-activated calcium peroxide (CP) to develop a hydroxyl (HO) and carbon dioxide radical (CO2-) coexistence process for the simultaneous redox-based degradation of three chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs), namely carbon tetrachloride (CT), tetrachloroethene (PCE), and trichloroethene (TCE), was investigated. The experimental results showed that CT removal was increased while PCE and TCE degradation were decreased with the addition of FA to the Fe(II)/CP system. However, addition of CIT to the Fe(II)…

Development of a 3D-bioprinted wheat gluten-based scaffold functionalized with citric acid for cultured meat applications.

The commercial viability of cultivated meat depends on the development of edible, low-cost scaffolds that provide suitable biomechanical cues for cell maturation. This study developed and characterized a food-grade composite bioink based on wheat gluten (10.8% w/w), sodium alginate (6.5% w/w), and carboxymethylcellulose (3.2% w/w), functionalized with citric acid for 3D bioprinting. Two formulations were evaluated: Control (BC) and Modified with citric acid (BM). Rheological characterization confirmed a non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior (n = 0.14 to 0.22) for both groups, promoting shape f…
