Cognition in relation to non-auditory or multisensory hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: A scoping review.

Multisensory hallucinations refer to unusual perceptual events in the absence of corresponding stimuli, experienced in two or more sensory modalities. Within the schizophrenia-spectrum disorder literature, the cognitive correlates of multisensory and non-auditory hallucinations remain largely unknown. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise research that explored relationships between cognition and non-auditory and multisensory hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Published, peer-reviewed, empirical research studies were sought through three databases: Web of Science, Sc

Associations of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy with cognition, dementia, and brain structure: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have found associations between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and an increased risk of cognitive dysfunction and reduced brain volume. However, the results of observational studies may have been influenced by confounding factors. This study applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the causal associations of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy with cognition, dementia, and brain structure. METHODS: Summary data on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and their main subtypes, cognition, dementia, and brain structure were obtained from rec

Exploring Associations Between Hypoxia, Serum Erythropoietin, and Cognition in Patients With Mood Disorders and Healthy Individuals.

PURPOSE: Moderate repeated hypoxia (MRH) has shown neuroprotective and neuroplastic effects, partly mediated by erythropoietin (EPO) via hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). This study examined the effects of 3 weeks of daily 3.5-h normobaric hypoxia (12% O2) versus normoxia (20% O2) combined with cognitive training on oxygen saturation (SpO2), cerebral side effects, hematology (including EPO and brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF]), and cognitive learning. We also assessed SpO2 associations with side effects, hematology, and learning outcomes, as well as potential clinical and demographic p

Impact of Polygenic Interactions With Anticholinergic Burden on Cognition and Brain Structure in Psychosis Spectrum Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether genetic predispositions to cognitive ability or psychiatric conditions interact with anticholinergic burden (AChB) to impact cognition and brain structure in individuals with psychotic disorders. METHODS: Participants with psychosis spectrum disorders (N=1,704) from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network for Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) consortium, 18-65 years of age and representing diverse ancestries, underwent cognitive assessments, structural neuroimaging, genotyping, and a comprehensive medication review. The primary cognitive outcome was

Metabotropic glutamate receptors and cognition: From underlying plasticity and neuroprotection to cognitive disorders and therapeutic targets.

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors are G protein-coupled receptors that play pivotal roles in mediating the activity of neurons and other cell types within the brain, communication between cell types, synaptic plasticity, and gene expression. As such, these receptors play an important role in a number of cognitive processes. In this chapter, we discuss the role of mGlu receptors in various forms of cognition and their underlying physiology, with an emphasis on cognitive dysfunction. Specifically, we highlight evidence that links mGlu physiology to cognitive dysfunction across brain disord

What does diffusion tensor imaging reveal about the brain and cognition in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders?

Over the past 5 years, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) has begun to provide new evidence about the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on white matter development. DTI, which examines microstructural tissue integrity, is sensitive to more subtle white matter abnormalities than traditional volumetric MRI methods. Thus far, the available DTI data suggest that white matter microstructural abnormalities fall on a continuum of severity in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Abnormalities are prominent in the corpus callosum, but also evident in major anterior-posterior fiber bundles, corticospi

Is it Alzheimer's disease or something else? 10 disorders that may feature impaired memory and cognition.

Patients who have the classic combination of progressive memory loss and problems retrieving stored knowledge that is characteristic of Alzheimer's disease may actually have another, treatable disorder. In these cases, appropriate evaluation can reveal the true diagnosis and guide therapy to stabilize or improve thinking and avert other complications. In this article, Dr Barrett explores 10 conditions that may be mistaken for Alzheimer's disease.

[A specific disorder in Kanji writing in a learning disabled child with a visual cognition disorder--a cognitive-neuropsychological and electrophysiological analysis].

We reported a learning disabled child with a specific disorder involving Kanji writing. The patient was a 13-year-old boy. Although he manifested generally normal intellectual ability and his performance on WISC-R indicated that VIQ was 101 and PIQ 84, he could only write approximately 20% of Kanji, which he learned at age 6 to 7. On cognitive-psychological tests, he showed a visual cognition disorder that was different from that in a previously reported case during information processing. Electrophysiologically, he showed a disorder in visual task-relevant potentials. The mechanism underlying

Predicting Response to Pro-Cognitive Interventions in Mood Disorders: A Systematic Review by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Targeting Cognition Task Force.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are often associated with persistent cognitive deficits that impair psychosocial functioning. While pro-cognitive interventions show promise, trial findings are inconsistent, potentially due to baseline factors influencing treatment response. This systematic review summarizes evidence on pre-treatment characteristics associated with cognitive improvement and offers methodological recommendations. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library from inception to February

[Obstructive sleep apnea as an aggravating factor of cognitive impairment in vascular cognitive disorder].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on cognitive function and the severity of anxiety-depressive symptoms in patients with moderate vascular cognitive disorder (VCD), and identify the most susceptible cognitive domains. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients with moderate VCD were examined. The main group consisted of patients with moderate VCD and severe OSAS (n=26, AHI≥30), compared to patients with moderate VCD but without OSAS (n=25, AHI<5). Cardiorespiratory monitoring was used to diagnose OSAS. Neuropsychological testing included the Mon

The MATRICS consensus cognitive battery for the assessment of cognitive impairment in schizotypal personality disorder.

Cognitive deficits are a core impairment across the range of schizophrenia (SZ) spectrum disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder (SPD). The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was developed to be a robust, specific, and valid cognitive assessment battery to assess cognition in clinical trials for treating cognitive impairments in SZ. Despite the similarity of cognitive impairments shown in SPD and SZ and the clear relevance of uniform assessment across a diagnostic spectrum, the MCCB has yet to be validated in SPD. As such, this is the first study to evaluate the sensitivi

Cognitive change before sudden gains in cognitive behavioural therapy for panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sudden gains occur in a range of disorders and treatments and are of clinical and theoretical significance if they can shed light on therapeutic change processes. This study investigated the relationship between sudden gains in panic symptoms and preceding cognitive change during cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for panic disorder. METHOD: Participants with panic disorder completed in session measures of panic symptoms and catastrophic cognitions. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare the post-treatment score of those who met criteria for one or more sudden gain duri

Preliminary evidence for cognitive mediation during cognitive-behavioral therapy of panic disorder.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy are similarly effective for treating panic disorder with mild or no agoraphobia, but little is known about the mechanism through which these treatments work. The present study examined some of the criteria for cognitive mediation of treatment change in CBT alone, imipramine alone, CBT plus imipramine, and CBT plus placebo. Ninety-one individuals who received 1 of these interventions were assessed before and after acute treatment, and after a 6-month maintenance period. Multilevel moderated mediation analyses provided preliminary support fo

Atypical semantic cognition in schizotypal personality disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Increased schizotypal traits have previously been associated with atypical semantic cognition in community samples. However, no study has yet examined whether adults diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) display atypical semantic fluency and memory. We hypothesized that 24 adults diagnosed with SPD would name more idiosyncratic words on the semantic fluency task and show decreased semantic recall for animal and fruit category words compared with 29 participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and a community sample of 96 age-matched controls. We examined whether atyp
