[Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders].

Recent years have seen the development of Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy, i.e. psychological self-help program mediated via the Internet, the patient being in contact via e-mail with the support person directing the therapy. Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy usually consists of psychoeducation, exercises and prevention of the recurrence of symptoms. Modules of the network program are thus the cornerstones of "live" cognitive-behavioral therapy. Self-help provided by Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy therapy has been found to be effective especially in the treat

Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa: a controlled study.

The object of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an Internet-based therapy (IBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN) as compared to a waiting list (WL). Sixty-two female BN patients, diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria, were assigned to either the IBT or a WL. The control participants (WL) were matched to the IBT group in terms of age, duration of the disorder, number of previous treatments, and severity of the disorder. Assessment measures included the EDI, SCL-90-R, BITE, the TCI-R, and other clinical and psychopathological indices, which were administrated before and after the treatment

Behavioral, cognitive, and family therapy for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, individually and combined, are a solid base in any therapy, the goal of which is to decrease the maladaptive behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. Future research into this area involves two branches: (1) better resolution in what components of current treatments are effective and (2) a better understanding of the cause of OCD. The therapies of choice are behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, but often what is described as behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy varies. Further refinement of the specific components of

Cognitive/behavioral therapy of anxiety in the medically ill: cardiac settings.

Anxiety appears to be a strong risk factor for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and specifically fatal IHD. However, no randomly assigned, controlled, clinical trial targeting anxiety yet exists demonstrating an impact on objective cardiac outcomes. Situational anxiety is frequent in cardiac populations and can diminish quality-of-life by increasing symptoms/disability and result in unnecessary medical system utilization. "Noncardiac" chest pain is common both in patients with objective coronary disease and in patients whose cardiac workup is negative. Both presentations of chest pain respond to c

Comorbid panic disorder and major depression: implications for cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Panic disorder and major depression frequently coexist, yet the implications of comorbidity for psychological treatments have rarely been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether pretreatment comorbidity of major depression affects the outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) of panic disorder. Thirty-seven clients who met diagnostic criteria for both panic and major depression participated in 10 sessions of individual CBT for panic. Treatment outcome was contrasted with the outcome of 53 clients having only panic disorder who received the same treatment. The co-occu

Comparison of cognitive-behavioral and supportive-expressive therapy for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared the effectiveness of 4 months (18 sessions) of cognitive-behavioral and supportive-expressive therapy for bulimia. METHOD: Sixty patients obtained from clinical referrals to an eating disorders program who met modified DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa were randomly assigned to the two conditions. Treatments were delivered in an individual format, on an outpatient basis, by experienced therapists using treatment manuals. The primary outcome measures were self-induced vomiting, binge eating, and attitudes toward body weight and shape, which were assessed by

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: does cognitive behavioral therapy improve home behavior?

This study evaluates the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving the home behavior of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-five boys (age 7 to 13) with a diagnosis of ADHD were randomized to a CBT or supportive therapy control group. Outcome measures included parent and teacher ratings of the child on the Behavior Problem Checklist-Attention Problem Subscale (BPC-AP), and the Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS), parent ratings on the Modified Werry Weiss Activity Scale, and child ratings on the Piers Harris Self-Concept Scale and Matching …

Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Mitigate Subacute Suicidal Ideation Among Youth.

There is a critical need to develop brief, scalable interventions for youth that can facilitate accessible, cost-efficient, and least-restrictive support, while addressing key drivers of suicidal ideation (SI). We present an overview of a novel cognitive-behavioral therapy module which targets perceived burdensomeness toward others (PB), an established driver of SI. Empirical work indicates that PB precipitates SI and is modifiable in youth. Hence, the primary aims of the module are to decrease levels of PB and downstream SI in youth who present with subacute suicidal ideation (i.e., SI not re

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for a Patient Diagnosed with Emetophobia - case study.

The aim of this paper is to present the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of emetophobia. The fear of vomiting (emetophobia) is a specific phobia, the mild form affects over 3% of the population, predominantly women. The main symptoms are associ- ated with the fear of experiencing nausea and other gastrointestinal sensations. These sensations are interpreted as a signal of impending vomiting, leading to discomfort and avoidance of eating and social situations. The symptoms may resemble other somatic and psychological disorders and can co-occur with various mental hea

Brain structural change associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in maltreated children.

BACKGROUND: Severely maltreatment child is a harmful social factor that can disrupt normal neurodevelopment. Two commonly reported effects of maltreatment are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and brain structural and functional alteration. While Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is effectively used to reduce PTSD symptoms in maltreated children, yet, its impact on brain structural alterations has not been fully explored. This study investigated whether TF-CBT can attenuate alterations in brain structures associated with PTSD in middle childhood. METHODS: The s

The Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia on Multidimensional Perfectionism.

Perfectionism is related to insomnia and objective markers of disturbed sleep. This study examined whether multidimensional perfectionism is related to dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, sleep-effort, pre-sleep arousal, and polysomnography-determined markers of sleep among individuals with insomnia. The effects of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) on perfectionism was also examined. This was a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial on CBT-I. Forty-three insomnia patients were randomized to treatment (receiving CBT-I) or waitlist control groups. Sleep was recorded u…

Telephone-Administered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Case Series.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective treatment for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), but many patients do not receive appropriate treatment due to several treatment barriers and psychosocial care structures. Low-threshold interventions, including those from the field of e-mental health, could improve access to psychotherapy. In addition to internet-administered therapy, telephone-administered therapy may reduce treatment barriers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article presents four case reports of the same treatment (12 weeks of telephone-administered cognitive behavioral…

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

There are currently no evidence-based treatments for adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and proof-of-concept of cognitive-behavioral therapy for ARFID (CBT-AR) for adults. Males and females (ages 18-55 years) were offered 20-30 outpatient sessions of CBT-AR delivered by one of five therapists. Of 18 eligible adults offered CBT-AR, 15 chose to participate and 14 completed treatment. All patients endorsed high ratings of treatment credibility and expected improvement after the first session, and

Intolerance of uncertainty and transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is a transdiagnostic variable elevated across anxiety disorders. No studies have investigated IU's response to transdiagnostic group CBT for anxiety (TGCBT). This study evaluated IU outcomes following TGCBT across anxiety disorders. METHODS: 151 treatment-seekers with primary diagnoses of social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or GAD were evaluated before and after 12 weeks of TGCBT and completed self-report questionnaires at pre-, mid-, and post-treatment. RESULTS: IU decreased significantly following treatment. Decrease

Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Comorbid Cannabis Use and Anxiety Disorders.

Cannabis use disorders (CUDs) co-occur with anxiety disorders at high rates, presumably because some individuals with anxiety disorders may rely on cannabis to manage anxiety. Motivation enhancement therapy (MET) combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious intervention for CUD, yet outcomes are worse for patients with elevated anxiety. The integration of MET-CBT with False Safety Behavior Elimination Treatment (FSET) may be useful with anxious CUD patients, as the use of cannabis to manage anxiety can be targeted as a false safety behavior. Here, we describe the integrat
