Conservative treatment of redisplaced Colles' fractures in elderly patients older than 60 years old - anatomical and functional outcome.

A retrospective study was carried out to compare the functional outcome in two groups of patients who were 60 years old or older. One group had Colles' fractures, which had been reduced and did not redisplace. The other group's fractures redisplaced and were treated conservatively. Of the 11 patients in the first group, 82% had excellent or good functional outcome, which was not significantly different when compared with the second group of 25 patients with 68% having excellent or good functional outcome.

Fast estimation of Colles' fracture load of the distal section of the radius by homogenized finite element analysis based on HR-pQCT.

Fractures of the distal section of the radius (Colles' fractures) occur earlier in life than other osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, they can be interpreted as a warning signal for later, more deleterious fractures of vertebral bodies or the femoral neck. In the past decade, the advent of HR-pQCT allowed a detailed architectural analysis of the distal radius and an automated but time-consuming estimation of its strength with linear micro-finite element (μFE) analysis. Recently, a second generation of HR-pQCT scanner (XtremeCT II, SCANCO Medical, Switzerland) with a resolution beyond 61 μm bec…

Late dorsal tilt angulation of distal articular surface of radius in Colles' type of fracture at the end of the immobilization, can it be predicted?

BACKGROUND: The objective was to predict the late dorsal tilt angulation of distal articular surface of radius in Colles' type of fracture with radioulna index difference, age, sex of the patient and dorsal cortex comminution. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Correlation between previously mentioned factors and the changing degree of dorsal tilt angulation of distal articular surface of radius were analyzed. Sixty three wrist radiographs of sixty two patients with Colles' type of fracture were evaluated for dorsal tilt angulation of distal articular surface, radioulna index before and after reduction and

Sauvé-Kapandji operation for disorders of the distal radioulnar joint after Colles' fracture. Good results in 12 patients followed for 1.5-4 years.

Controversies continue concerning the treatment of the posttraumatic caput ulna syndrome. We have treated 12 patients, mean age 42 (23-77) years, with arthrodesis ad modum Sauvé-Kapandji of the distal articulation between the radius and ulna, combined with resection of the ulnar neck. Before the operation, all patients had persistent ulnar wrist pain and restricted pronation-supination movement. At follow-up, after a mean of 2 (1.5-4) years, 8 patients had an excellent outcome, 3 a good, and 1 patient had a fair outcome. 10 patients had no wrist pain. The average grip-score improved from 53% p

DOES AN EARLY POST-OPERATIVE PAIN RELIEVE INFLUENCE THE FUNCTIONAL OUTCOME OF PATIENTS WITH COLLES FRACTURES TREATED WITH EG-BLOCK SYSTEM?

Distal Radius Fractures (DRFs) represent one of the most common elderly patient's fractures. Often DRFs required surgical treatment based on instability of the fragments and due to the high functional demand from patients. A general agreement on the best pharmacological treatment in the post-operative is still missing. The present study describes the clinical outcome in patients who underwent surgery for Colles fracture using ES fixation osteosynthesis. ; The present investigation represents a one center retrospective analysis. In this study, two different medical treatments were recognized, a

Global and Spatial Compartmental Interrelationships of Bone Density, Microstructure, Geometry and Biomechanics in the Distal Radius in a Colles' Fracture Study Using HR-pQCT.

BACKGROUND: Bone parameters derived from HR-pQCT have been investigated on a parameter-by-parameter basis for different clinical conditions. However, little is known regarding the interrelationships of bone parameters and the spatial distribution of these interrelationships. In this work: 1) we investigate compartmental interrelationships of bone parameters; 2) assess the spatial distribution of interrelationships of bone parameters; and 3) compare interrelationships of bone parameters between postmenopausal women with and without a recent Colles' fracture. METHODS: Images from the unaffected…

Assessing the Radiological and Functional Outcomes of Colles' Cast Versus Functional Position Cast Immobilization in the Conservative Treatment of Distal End of Radius Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The distal end radius fracture represents a prevalent orthopedic condition that affects individuals across various age groups, commonly resulting from falls onto outstretched hands. Ongoing research endeavors have delved into diverse methodologies for addressing this condition, encompassing conservative and operative modalities, yielding variable outcomes. While the literature extensively delineates numerous mobilization approaches, such as the functional position cast and Colle's cast, scant comparative studies evaluate these immobilization forms. Consequently, our study sought

The risk of Colles' fracture is associated with the collagen I alpha1 Sp1 polymorphism and ultrasound transmission velocity in the calcaneus only in heavier postmenopausal women.

To compare the ability of the bone mineral density (BMD) at the distal forearm, collagen I alpha 1 (COLIA1) polymorphism, and ultrasound stiffness to identify individuals with increased risk of wrist fracture, we studied 183 postmenopausal Czech women with a wrist fracture and 178 postmenopausal controls, ages 45-70 years. The genotypes "Ss" and "ss" were significantly overrepresented among fracture cases. The BMD measurements at the femoral neck, total femur, and distal forearm as well as ultrasound stiffness of the heel, broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), and speed of sound (SOS) were s

Evaluation of the Efficacy of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Formulation Ru-Yi-Jin-Huang-Saan on Colles Fracture After Surgery: Protocol for a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Colles fracture, a common wrist injury, often requires surgical intervention. After surgery, patients may experience persistent pain and reduced wrist function, potentially resulting in long-term disability. In clinical practice, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners frequently use Ru-Yi-Jin-Huang-Saan (RYJHS) to treat such patients in Taiwan. RYJHS is a traditional Chinese herbal formula with a history spanning centuries, primarily used topically for the treatment of bone fractures and the promotion of healing. However, there is currently a lack of substantial clinical eviden

Association between lumbar-spine trabecular bone score and radiographic severity of low-energy Colles-type distal radius fractures in women aged 50 years or older.

UNLABELLED: We assessed the association of TBS with radiographic severity of Colles-type DRFs in female patients aged ≥ 50 years. The results indicated a significantly higher incidence of intra-articular DRFs and DUFs in low-TBS group, independent of displacement. Deteriorated bone microarchitecture may be associated with the severity of low-energy osteoporotic DRFs. PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of the trabecular bone score (TBS), which reflects bone microarchitecture, on the radiographic severity of Colles-type distal radius fractures (DRFs). METHODS: 104 patients aged ≥ 50 y

Abraham Colles and his contributions to anatomy.

Abraham Colles is known among the medical community for his detailed description of Colles' fracture, one of the most common occurring skeletal injuries. It is remarkable that something as seemingly simple as the diagnosis of Colles' fracture had not been established until nearly 200 years ago. While that may have been his most well known accomplishment, Colles made several other contributions to medicine across multiple fields of practice. In the field of anatomy, he is also credited for his discovery and description of Colles' fascia and Colles' ligament. Less commonly known, however, are hi…
