An arterioenteric fistula is a life-threatening condition. Whereas most arterioenteric fistulae involve the duodenum, they can occur at any point along the gastrointestinal tract, and those to the lower tract may present with less classic symptoms than arterioduodenal fistulae. It is likely that more patients with arterioenteric fistulae will present to the emergency department (ED) in the future because of an increasing number of elective aortic aneurysm repairs in an aging population. We present a patient with a secondary fistula involving the sigmoid colon who presented to the ED with abdom

Carcinoid tumors of the colon are a rare cause of colonic malignant disease. A case of carcinoid tumor of the sigmoid colon is presented that illustrates the indolent course of this type of tumor. The case presented highlights the clinicopathologic features of carcinoid tumors of hindgut origin, including advanced local and widely metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis in the absence of symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome. The diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors are reviewed.

A 59 year old man presented with subacute abdominal distension and diarrhea. Plain radiographs and barium enema demonstrated organo-axial volvulus of the sigmoid colon. The radiologic, surgical, and pathologic findings are presented. The radiologic differences between organo-axial volvulus and the common mesentero-axial volvulus of the sigmoid colon are discussed.

We report a rare case of a solitary urethral recurrence of sigmoid colon cancer. The recurrence developed 2 years after a radical resection of sigmoid colon cancer invading the bladder. The involved portion of the urethra was resected and an end-to-end anastomosis was made. The patient has been able to urinate per urethram and has remained free of recurrence for 7 years after the urethral resection.

BACKGROUND: An anatomic study about the arterial vascularization of the sigmoid was performed in order to obtain guidelines for the surgical treatment of rectal carcinoma.
AIM: In the proposed technique, the sigmoid is brought down to the perineum, after radical anal-rectal resection, including sphincterectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-three anatomical pieces were obtained through in situ dissection of formolized corpses (22 were male and 11 female). Turpentine solution, red marking, polyvinyl chloride were the materials used for preparation after catheterization of the inferior mesenter

A 52-year-old woman presented with sudden left lower abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. As the symptom got improved immediately she went home then. She consulted our hospital with chief complaint of the left lower abdominal mass. Abdominal computed tomography revealed sigmoid colon cancer with abscess. She was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer via colonoscopy. Sigmoidectomy including partial resection of the abdominal wall was performed(D3 lymphadenectomy). Surgical specimen showed penetration of diverticulum on mucous membrane of the lesion which had been thought of a abdominal wall perme

INTRODUCTION: Giant colonic diverticulum is a rare complication of colonic diverticulosis that occurs when a single diverticulum enlarges to over 4cm in diameter. There have been fewer than 200 cases reported worldwide since it was first described in 1946.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The author presents a rare case of a giant colonic diverticulum that presented as a sigmoid volvulus. The patient underwent emergency surgery with resection of the diverticulum and reduction of the volvulus.
DISCUSSION: Due to their propensity to cause complications and mechanical blockage from their large size, all a

Schwannoma is a type of peripheral nerve sheath tumor that is often found in the head and neck. Schwannomas in the digestive system, particularly the colon and rectum, are exceptionally rare, and they are mostly non-malignant and asymptomatic although sometimes patients can present with symptoms similar to those observed in patients with other gastrointestinal tumors like abdominal pain, fullness, nausea, vomiting, and change in bowel habits. For diagnosis and treatment, surgical resection along with biopsy is the gold standard. In this paper, we describe a rare case of sigmoid schwannoma that

A man in his 40s presented with a 7-day history of fever and abdominal pain after polypectomy of the sigmoid colon. On physical examination, he had mild tenderness on deep palpation of the left lower abdominal quadrants without guarding, rigidity or rebound tenderness. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed the thrombosis of the inferior mesenteric vein and the portal vein. Blood cultures were positive for Escherichia coli We diagnosed him with pylephlebitis after colonic polypectomy, as a rare complication. He was started on cefmetazole and heparin. Antibiotic and anticoagulation therapy were initiate

In Japan, the number of the patients with colorectal carcinomas is increasing. Micropapillary carcinoma(MPC)is a rare adenocarcinoma that shows a characteristic histological feature. The first case of MPC was reported in 1993, which originated in the breast. It has been reported that MPC also rarely arises in the colon. In this report, we showed a case of MPC arising in the sigmoid colon in a 73-year-old man with adenosquamous carcinoma in the lung. The patient consulted a home physician due to cough, and a tumor on the right lung of the patient was detected by chest radiography and CT. The lu

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMFT) of the colon is a very rare entity, characterized by proliferation of myofibroblast cells admixed with inflammatory infiltrates. The entity was first described in the late 1990s, and since then less than 30 cases have been described. It frequently mimics other neoplasm of the colon, such as adenocarcinoma, lymphoma and stromal tumor, and is very difficult to clinch the diagnosis preoperatively based on the clinical and radiological findings. Here, we discuss an uncommon case of sigmoid IMFT in a 35-year old male, presenting with bleeding per rectum and

We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) occurring at the sigmoid colon in an 8-year-old male. He had experienced lower abdominal pain and fever for several days. Contrast-enhanced CT images revealed a well-enhanced mass involving several large and small cystic parts with thin, enhanced walls at the sigmoid colon. The diagnosis was made histopathologically after surgical resection; the cystic parts corresponded to dilated lymphatic vessels. KHE is a rare, locally aggressive, vascular tumor that usually occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities. However, a case occurring in

We report a case of a rare solitary ganglioneuroma occurring in the sigmoid colon of a 70-year-old woman. She experienced sudden onset of abdominal pain and loss of old blood from the gastrointestinal tract. A colonoscopy disclosed a pedunculate polyp in the sigmoid colon 20 cm from the anus, and a histopathologic examination revealed a polypoid mucosa with abundant ganglionic cells and nerve fibres.

Sigmoid volvulus (SV) is the third leading cause of colon obstruction in adults. In infants and children, it is exceedingly rare with only sporadic cases reported so far. SVs from secondary causes, with congenital megacolon being the most important, are nevertheless more common in young people. The etiology of this disorder is not completely understood. It is known to occur in the setting of redundant sigmoid loop, which rotates around its narrow and elongated mesentery. Although the latter occurs in the setting of constipation, a congenitally elongated colon, and other predisposing factors, t
