Communicating for business resilience.

Defining resilience has remained a challenge despite decades of research across multiple disciplines. This paper proposes that resilience can be better understood when examined through the framework of communication. Resilience is proposed to have three interconnected domains (community, organisation and individual) and two dimensions (physical and social-emotional). This work focuses on the social-emotional components of enacted organisational resilience. The impact of organisational culture on sensemaking, organisational narrative and resilience strategies is explored. Communication-based in

Evaluating community science.

Community science-scientific investigation conducted partly or entirely by non-professional scientists-has many advantages. For example, community science mobilizes large numbers of volunteers who can, at low cost, collect more data than traditional teams of professional scientists. Participation in research can also increase volunteers' knowledge about and appreciation of science. At the same time, there are worries about the quality of data that community science projects produce. Can the work of non-professionals really deliver trustworthy results? Attempts to answer this question generally

[Community-acquired pneumonia].

Important new developments in the understanding of CAP encompass new insights into pathogens, risk stratification and antibiotic treatment. Respiratory viruses are increasingly described as relevant pathogens in CAP, such as influenza and rhinoviruses. Risk stratification is central in the management of CAP. In addition to the classical scores blood glucose levels add to the risk prediction. Risk adapted antibiotic treatment is increasingly refined and the use of macrolides in patients with bacteremia or marked inflammation is advocated. Recently developed new antibiotics add to the therapeuti

Transgender Voice and Communication.

Voice is a complex marker for gender and pivotal to the gender reassignment process. The goal of the transgender patient is to achieve a voice and communication style that is congruent with their gender identity. Voice and speech therapy are fundamental for successful transition. Phonosurgery, to adjust pitch, can be an important adjunct to relieve the patient from active pitch elevation of voice to free them to focus on the other adjustments needed and learned through behavioral training with speech and voice therapy. The authors review current management options for transgender patients with

Community-acquired pneumonia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adults. RECENT FINDINGS: CAP is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common CAP pathogen; however, microbial cause varies by geographic location and host factors. Identification of a microbial cause in CAP remains challenging - 30-65% of cases do not have a pathogen isolated. The use of molecular techniques in addition to culture, serology and urinary antigen testing has improved diagnostic yield. Scor

Community relations 2.0.

Before the Internet, organizations had far more time to monitor and respond to community activity, but that luxury is long gone, leaving them in dire need of a coherent outreach strategy, fresh skills, and adaptive tactics. Drawing on the authors' study of more than two dozen firms, this article describes the changes wrought by social media in particular and shows managers how to take advantage of them--lessons that Kaiser Permanente, Domino's, and others learned the hard way. Social media platforms enhance the power of communities by promoting deep relationships, facilitating rapid organizati

Community-acquired pneumonia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major cause of morbidity, mortality and expenditure of resources. When followed, guidelines for CAP management have been demonstrated to improve clinical outcomes; however, several issues are still open. This review summarizes the recent advances in this field and the priority needs for future research. RECENT FINDINGS: Recently identified clinical and biochemical tools promise to improve the assessment of CAP severity; however, definition of the most accurate and feasible rule(s) for clinical practice is now necessary. Some empirical

Patient-doctor communication.

Communication is an important component of patient care. Traditionally, communication in medical school curricula was incorporated informally as part of rounds and faculty feedback, but without a specific or intense focus on skills of communicating per se. The reliability and consistency of this teaching method left gaps, which are currently getting increased attention from medical schools and accreditation organizations. There is also increased interest in researching patient-doctor communication and recognizing the need to teach and measure this specific clinical skill. In 1999, the Accredit

Retinal arteriovenous communication.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in development of the embryonic vascular system, though uncommon, may cause formation of retinal arteriovenous communications (RAC). Such anomalies may also involve the intracranial, orbital, and maxillofacial blood vessels. Field loss, neovascular glaucoma, optic atrophy, Parinaud syndrome, hemiparesis, hemiplegia, and proptosis may be associated with RAC. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old woman was referred for photography of a vascular anomaly in her left eye. I noted a large arteriovenous malformation joining major temporal branches of the left central retinal artery and

Climacteric complaints in the community.

BACKGROUND: At the onset of the climacteric, healthy middle-aged women present with a variety of complaints, especially in general practice. In these first years of entering the menopause, vaginal blood loss alters from irregular periods to complete amenorrhoea. According to these different menstrual patterns, we can distinguish a pre-, peri- and postmenopausal phase. It could be useful to know whether specific climacteric complaints are related to these different phases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between climacteric complaints and the menstrual patt

Heartburn: community perceptions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To determine the prevalence of heartburn in the Australian community, and document factors precipitating it and medications used in treatment. METHODS: Telephone interviews with 1200 individuals aged 18 years or more were conducted one weekend in 1996. Each respondent was asked four questions about heartburn, its severity, factors causing it and current therapy. RESULTS: Fifty-six per cent of respondents reported that they had suffered from heartburn at some time in the past and 37% had symptoms at least once every 4-6 months. The frequency of heartburn increased with ag

Community-acquired pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in the elderly or patients with coexisting diseases. Therapeutic strategies are usually empiric, based upon demographic and epidemiologic factors, acuity and severity of illness, comorbidities, and cost constraints. Recent guidelines may be used to discriminate patients who may be treated in the outpatient setting with oral antimicrobials from patients in whom hospitalization and parenteral therapy is appropriate. Over the past decade, dramatic escalation in antimicrobial resistance among common respi

Evaluation of facilitated communication.

Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of Facilitated Communication (FC). A wide variety of sources of data have been examined and consistent behaviour found within FC interactions. There are indications that changes in behaviour of both people resulted at least in part from the use of FC.
