Mechanism of clay minerals in promoting organic matter sequestration and humification during chicken manure composting.

To accelerate the humification process and promote organic matter sequestration during aerobic composting, this work assessed how various clay minerals facilitate organic matter sequestration and humic acid synthesis in chicken manure composting. A composting trial was set up, including a control and three treatments incorporating montmorillonite , halloysite , and sepiolite , respectively. A water-permeable membrane encapsulation technique was employed to isolate the clay minerals from the composting feedstock in order to monitor their adsorption behavior towards organic matter. Montmorilloni…

Synergistic application of biochar and compound microbial inoculant improves the performance of green waste composting.

Composting of green waste (GW) is a sustainable strategy for organic waste recycling; however, its efficiency is often constrained by the recalcitrant nature of lignocellulosic components. This study evaluated the synergistic effects of biochar (BC) and a compound microbial inoculant (VT) on lignocellulose degradation and overall composting performance. Nine treatments were established with varying BC (0 %, 3 %, and 6 %) and VT (0 %, 0.2 %, and 0.4 %) additions over a 35-day composting period. Among all treatments, the co-application of 6 % BC and 0.2 % VT (T8) produced the greatest improvemen…

Multi-omics reveal an overlooked pathway for H2S production induced by bacterial biogenesis from composting.

Sulfate reduction has long been considered a leading cause of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions from composting, causing serious air pollution and health threats. H2S biogenesis through cysteine cleavage is a known pathway for bacteria to resist oxidative stress. However, whether the biogenesis pathway exacerbates H2S emission during composting with dramatic temperature changes and oxidative stress is largely unknown. Here, we used DL-propargylglycine (PAG), an inhibitor of cysteine lyase (cystathionine γ-lyase), to explore the contribution of biogenesis pathway to H2S production during compost…

Correlation of microbial dynamics to odor production and emission in full-scale sewage sludge composting.

Odor is inevitably produced during sewage sludge composting, and the subsequent pollution hinders the further development of composting technologies. Third-generation high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze microbial community succession, and the correlations between odor and microbial communities were evaluated. Hydrogen sulfide (47.5-87.9 %) and ammonia (9.4-49.9 %) contributed majorly to odor emissions, accounting for 93.7-98.5 % of the emissions. Volatile sulfur compounds were mainly produced in the mesophilic and pre-thermophilic phases (43.0-83.4 %), whereas ammonia was mainly pro…

[Effect of Antibiotic-Degrading Bacteria on Maturity and Bacterial Community Succession During Pig Manure Composting].

The inoculation of antibiotic-degrading bacteria into manure could promote the removal of antibiotics during composting. However, knowledge on the impact of inoculating these antibiotic-degrading bacteria on the composting process and indigenous microbial community succession is still limited. This study assessed the antibiotic removal efficiency in pig manure after inoculating a microbial inoculum with antibiotic-degrading bacteria as the key component. The effect of inoculating this microbial inoculum on the physicochemical dynamics and the succession of the manure bacterial community during…

Emission of volatile sulphur compounds during swine manure composting: Source identification, odour mitigation and assessment.

This study aimed to identify the sources of volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) and evaluate their mitigation by ferric oxide (Fe2O3) during swine manure composting. Four chemicals, including l-cysteine, l-methionine, sodium sulphite, and sodium sulphate, were further added to simulate organic and inorganic sulphur-containing substances in swine manure to track VSC sources during composting. Results show that sulphur simulants induced the emission of six common VSCs, including methyl sulphide (Me2S), dimethyl sulphide (Me2SS), carbonyl sulphide (COS), carbon disulphide (CS2), methyl mercaptan (M…

Air Pollutant Emission Rates for Dry Anaerobic Digestion and Composting of Organic Municipal Solid Waste.

Dry anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic municipal solid waste (MSW) followed by composting of the residual digestate is a waste diversion strategy that generates biogas and soil amendment products. The AD-composting process avoids methane (CH4) emissions from landfilling, but emissions of other greenhouse gases, odorous/toxic species, and reactive compounds can affect net climate and air quality impacts. In situ measurements of key sources at two large-scale industrial facilities in California were conducted to quantify pollutant emission rates across the AD-composting process. These measureme…

Dynamics of oxytetracycline, sulfamerazine, and ciprofloxacin and related antibiotic resistance genes during swine manure composting.

Understanding the dynamics of veterinary antibiotic and related antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during swine manure composting is crucial in assessing the environmental risk of antibiotics, which could effectively reduce their impact in natural environments. This study investigated the dissipation of oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfamerazine (SM1) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) as well as the behaviour of their corresponding ARGs during swine manure composting. These antibiotics were added at two concentration levels and two different methods of addition (single/mixture). The results indicated that the…

Drastic Change in Zinc Speciation during Anaerobic Digestion and Composting: Instability of Nanosized Zinc Sulfide.

Zinc (Zn) is a potentially toxic trace element that is present in large amounts in organic wastes (OWs) spread on agricultural lands as fert … ways favors the formation of nano-ZnS (>70% of zinc in digestates). However, after 1 to 3 months of composting of OWs, nano-ZnS becomes a minor species (<10% of zinc). In composts, Zn is mostly present as amorphous Zn phosphate and Zn sorbed to ferrihydrite. These results highlight (i) the influence of OW treatment on Zn speciation and (ii) the chemical inst …

The changes in carbon, nitrogen components and humic substances during organic-inorganic aerobic co-composting.

In this article, the changes in carbon, nitrogen components, and humic substances during organic-inorganic aerobic co-composting, with adding biochar as an additive or not, were studied. Results showed that adding a certain amount of inorganic fertilizers had no adverse effects on the compost fermentation process. Biochar enhanced the temperature, pH, oxygen content in the compost piles and ultimately hastened the fermentation process. Biochar contributed to the decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin and promoted compost humification. Adding biochar increased the contents of acid hy…

Emission characteristics of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) from a municipal sewage sludge aerobic composting plant.

The emission of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) causing strong odors is a major problem in municipal sewage sludge composting plants (MSSACPs). Improving the knowledge on characteristics of VSCs emission in MSAACPs is of particular significance to elimate odors, but the studies conducted on-site to identify them are scarce. To this purpose, characteristics of VSCs emission were studied on-site from a MSSACP during different ambient temperatures corresponding with seasonal variations. Results reveal that (1) the total emission of VSCs which included methyl disulfide (DMDS), methyl sulfide (DMS…

Use of additive and pretreatment to control odors in municipal kitchen waste during aerobic composting.

The effects of adding a bulking agent and chemically pretreating municipal kitchen waste before aerobic composting were studied using a laboratory-scale system. The system used 20-L reactors and each test lasted 28days. The objective was to decrease NH3 and H2S emissions during composting. The bulking agent, dry cornstalks, was mixed with the kitchen waste to give a mixture containing 15% (wet weight) bulking agent. A combined treatment was also conducted, in which kitchen waste mixed with the bulking agent was pretreated with ferric chloride (FeCl3). Less leachate was produced by the composte…

Occurrence of Microplastics and Cytotoxic Effects of Organic Extracts from Isolated Mesoplastics in Compost.

Compost application is a widely recommended practice to maintain and improve soil fertility. However, such a practice could be a main entry path for plastic into soil. Accordingly, in the present work, two different compost samples, obtained with and without biochar, were analyzed to investigate how composting can affect the presence of microplastics (MPs). The substrate of both samples (consisting of a mixture of household food waste and animal manure) was also analyzed for comparative purposes. Samples were processed by oxidation, flotation, and filtration. MPs on the filters were observed, …

Detection and specific chemical identification of submillimeter plastic fragments in complex matrices such as compost.

Research on the plastic contamination of organic fertilizer (compost) has largely concentrated on particles and fragments > 1 mm. Small, submillimeter microplastic particles may be more hazardous to the environment. However, research on their presence in composts has been impeded by the difficulty to univocally identify small plastic particles in such complex matrices. Here a method is proposed for the analysis of particles between 0.01 and 1.0 mm according to number, size, and polymer type in compost. As a first demonstration of its potential, the method is used to determine large and small m

Influence of Zinc and Humic Acids on Dye Adsorption from Water by Two Composts.

Searching for alternative low-cost biosorbents for the removal of textile dyes from wastewater is currently an important subject of research. In this work, we have investigated how the presence of other contaminants in textile wastewaters can affect dye adsorption by biosorbents. We tested the adsorption of three dyes of different types: Basic Violet 10 (BV10), Acid Blue 113 (AB113) and Direct Blue 71 (DB71) by two different composts-municipal solid waste compost and pine bark compost-in the presence of Zn (5 mg L-1) or dissolved organic matter (100 mg humic acids L-1) in batch experiments.
