Psychiatric comorbidity in Greek patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

From a total sample of 1,448 psychiatric outpatients, 81 (5.6%) received a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) according to DSM-III-R criteria. Fifty-three (65%) of them had another Axis I diagnosis, while this percentage increased to 78% (63/81) when lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were recorded. The most frequent comorbid diagnoses were panic disorder, dysthymia, major depression and social phobia. Forty-three (53%) of the GAD patients met the criteria for personality disorder. They manifested obsessive-compulsive, avoidant personality and personalities of cluster C in general sig

An Empirical Investigation Into Disorder-Specific Identity Impairment Across Personality Pathology.

Identity impairment is central to personality pathology generally, but less is known about how identity impairment appears differently across personality pathology. The AMPD lists a criterion for disorder-specific identity impairment for each personality disorder (PD), but these criteria have not been adequately empirically examined. N = 305 university students completed self-report measures of personality pathology (traditional DSM-5 and AMPD conceptualizations) and identity impairment (identity diffusion). We explored which identity diffusion items associated most strongly with each PD scale

Personality pathology and its influence on eating disorders.

Personality disorders appear to be present in a significant minority of individuals with eating disorders. For example, in contrast to repor … cific personality disorders may be shaping corresponding styles of eating pathology, with obsessive compulsive personality disorder partially accounting for restrictive eating pathology and borderline personality disorder partially accounting for impulsive eating pathology. These potential associations are explored.

Personality Profile of Male Adolescents With Tourette Syndrome: A Controlled Study.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple tics and commonly associated with behavioral problems, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The presence of specific personality traits has been documented in adult clinical populations with Tourette syndrome but has been underresearched in younger patients. We assessed the personality profiles of 17 male adolescents with Tourette syndrome and 51 age- and gender-matched healthy controls using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent version, al

Attachment Differences Across Close Relationships Among Inpatients With Avoidant or Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Pathology.

Two pathologies frequently presenting to treatment are the fear-based Cluster C variants of avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. Despite their distinctive syndromes, the literature has noted similar presentations and therapist-patient interactions that challenge diagnostic and treatment efforts. This study used a large sample (N = 1728) of psychiatric inpatients to observe differences in attachment styles across important persons (e.g., mom, dad, partner and friends) for those with avoidant or obsessive-compulsive personality pathology. Results demonstrated variety in attac…

Romantic relationship obsessive-compulsive doubts, perfectionism, and DSM-5 personality traits in LGB people: a comparison with heterosexual individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Relationship Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is characterized by the presence of relationship-centered or partner-focused obsessions and compulsions that determine a great sense of doubt toward the partner or the relationship. Personality characteristics, including perfectionism, are involved in the development of Relationship Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and could predispose the individual to excessive doubts and preoccupations regarding the "adequacy of the couple" or the physical appearance of one's partner. Evidence from epidemiological research shows that the LGB community c

The relationship between personality and DSM-III axis I disorders in the population: results from an epidemiological survey.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between specific personality disorders and DSM-III axis I conditions in a community sample. METHOD: A total of 810 subjects were examined by psychiatrists in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey, part of the Epidemiological Catchment Area Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. A semistructured examination, the Standardized Psychiatric Examination, was employed to assess axis I and axis II conditions. Sex distribution of DSM-III personality disorders in psychiatric outpatients.

The author determined the sex distribution of 170 outpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of personality disorder measured by standardized instruments and compared his findings with DSM-III predictions. They confirmed the prediction of more women diagnosed as having histrionic personality disorder and more men diagnosed as having paranoid, compulsive, and antisocial personality disorders. The predicted excess of women diagnosed as having borderline and dependent personality disorders was not confirmed.

General and maladaptive personality dimensions in pediatric obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and impairing clinical disorder in childhood, often characterized by a heterogeneous symptomatic profile and high co-occurrence with other disorders. The present study introduces a new perspective on the description of OCD symptoms in youth, and empirically examines the value of a personality framework (e.g. Five Factor of Personality; FFM) for understanding early OCD symptomatology in a referred sample of 274 children and adolescents, relying on age-specific measures of general and maladaptive personality. Differences in general and maladaptive

Personality disorder functioning styles and empathy in trainee nurses: the mediating and moderating roles of death attitudes.

BACKGROUND: There is abundant evidence that an individual's personality traits may influence their level of empathy. However, the role of death attitudes in the relationship between personality disorder functioning styles of nurses and their empathy remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Personality disorder functioning styles, death attitudes, and empathy levels were assessed in 614 Chinese trainee nurses using the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), the Death Attitude Scale-Revised (DAP-R), and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals (JSE-HP). RESULTS: Among the trainee nurses, DAP-

Childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Childhood trauma is known to predispose to a variety of psychiatric disorders, including mood, anxiety, eating, and personality disorders. However, the relationship between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms has not been well studied. This study examines the relationship between childhood trauma, personality facets, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in 938 college students using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Leyton Obsessional Inventory, and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Between 13 and 30% of subjects met criteria for childhood trauma, with emotional neglect

Psychopathological considerations on the relationship between bulimia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The relationship between eating disorders, impulse control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder as part of a so-called 'obsessive-compulsive spectrum' is discussed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between eating disorders (particularly bulimia) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The empirical studies on comorbidity, personality and familiarity are briefly reviewed. Both similarities and differences found in personality, body image, mental rumination, fears, physical exercises, rituals, impulses (bulimic binging and obsessive impulses) and purging behaviors of these patients
