Psychological distress, use of rehabilitation services, and disability status among noninstitutionalized US adults aged 35 years and older, who have cardiovascular conditions, 2007.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether psychological distress is associated with disability status and use of rehabilitation services among adults aged 35 years and older with cardiovascular conditions. METHODS: Using 2007 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), we assessed the association between serious psychological distress (SPD) and the prevalence of disability and use of outpatient rehabilitation services among cardiovascular disease (CVD) survivors aged 35 years or older. Respondents' SPD status was ascertained by the Kessler 6 questionnaire; their CVD survivor st

Associations between psychological factors, pressure pain thresholds and conditioned pain modulation and disability in (sub)-acute low back pain: a three-month follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation and pain experience of patients with (sub)-acute low back pain ((S)ALBP) can strongly vary in clinical practice. However, despite growing evidence that psychological factors are associated with disability in chronic pain conditions including low back pain, studies examining the influence of psychological factors, quantitative sensory testing (QST) (i.e. pressure pain thresholds (PPTs)) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) on future disability are still lacking in (S)ALBP. OBJECTIVE: This prospective cohort study aims to determine associations between bas

Psychological impacts from expectation of worsening conditions and obstacles to life planning are affected by glycemic control, self-reported symptoms, and drug therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: It is important to reduce psychological stresses for glycemic control in diabetes. We investigated the factors affecting psychological impact, which was involved in the disease conditions in 378 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients' self-assessed symptoms and four subscales of psychological impacts on diabetes - impact from diabetes (S1), anxiety from having a chronic disease (S2), expectation of worsening conditions (S3) and obstacles to life planning (S4) - were analyzed. RESULTS: Significant odds ratios (ORs) were found for sex and age

The relationship between the psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a model of conditioned processes mediated by negative emotions and moderated by deliberate rumination.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic has attracted the attention of researchers. For the present study researchers constructed a mediation model to explore the relationship between psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth, the mediating role of negative emotions and the moderating role of deliberate rumination in students. METHODS: The Psychological Resilience Scale, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Event Related Rumination Inventory were used in a survey of 881 college students. The data were

Can Clinical, Psychological, and Cognitive Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Help to Discriminate Women with Fibromyalgia from Those with Other Localized/Regional Pain Conditions? A Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Background and Objectives: The heterogeneous clinical manifestations of fibromyalgia syndrome have led to the revision of diagnostic criteria in the last decade. The aim of this study was to determine the capability of clinical, psychological, and cognitive patient-related outcome measures (PROMs) to differentiate women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) from women with localized or regional pain conditions. Materials and Methods: A diagnostic accuracy study was conducted. Clinical (pain intensity-NPRS; related disability-FIQ), psychological (anxiety/depressive levels-HADS-A/HADS-D), and cogniti

Interconnections across physical, psychological, existential, and health-related quality of life patient-reported outcomes in adults with chronic medical conditions: Baseline findings from the eMPower randomized controlled trial.

Individuals living with chronic illness commonly experience co-occurring physical, psychological, and existential symptoms that cluster and reinforce one another, contributing to functional decline and distress. Yet, frailty and existential distress have rarely been examined alongside psychological and physical symptoms, and few studies have mapped how these symptoms interrelate across chronic conditions. This study used baseline patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) from the eMPower randomized controlled trial to examine interconnections among symptoms across physical, psychological, and

The Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak on the Psychological Flexibility and Behaviour of Cancelling Medical Appointments of Italian Patients with Pre-Existing Medical Condition: The "ImpACT-COVID-19 for Patients" Multi-Centre Observational Study.

Psychological distress imposed by the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak particularly affects patients with pre-existing medical conditions, and the progression of their diseases. Patients who fail to keep scheduled medical appointments experience a negative impact on care. The aim of this study is to investigate the psychosocial factors contributing to the cancellation of medical appointments during the pandemic by patients with pre-existing health conditions. Data were collected in eleven Italian hospitals during the last week of lockdown, and one month later. In order to assess the emotional impact of the

Comparison of factors of the subjective psychological condition of hospitalized individuals with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, or affective disorders: associations between illness perception, quality of life, affective and anxiety symptom severity, and readiness to change.

Illness perception in mental health disorders can affect prognosis and well-being. According to the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, mental illness involves repetitive behavioral patterns that gradually change throughout the therapeutic process, during which progressing to stages of higher readiness to change is considered advantageous. The current study examined correlations between illness perception, readiness to change, quality of life, and the severity of depression and anxiety in hospitalized individuals with psychotic disorders or affective disorders. Data from 110 individuals

Orofacial Pain, Musical Performance and Associated Coping Behaviors, Psychological Distress and Disability among Asian Young Adults.

Musicians often report orofacial pain (OFP) and performance-related psychological distress related to occupational neuromuscular overuse, but to date, no study has been performed in Asian musicians to assess these factors. This study evaluated OFP, psychological distress, coping behaviors, and disability among Asian musical performers. A total of 201 participants in Singaporean music ensembles were surveyed from which 159 met the inclusion criteria for vocalists or instrumentalist musicians (mean age 20.26 ± 2.20 years). Self-administered questionnaires assessed musical practices, jaw/neck pre

Mood after various brief exercise and sport modes: aerobics, hip-hop dancing, ice skating, and body conditioning.

To investigate the potential psychological benefits of brief exercise and sport activities on positive mood alterations, 45 Korean high school and 232 undergraduate students enrolled in physical education and stress management classes voluntarily participated and were randomly assigned to one of four activities: aerobic exercise, body conditioning, hip-hop dancing, and ice skating. Mood changes from before to after exercise (2 pm to 3 pm) were measured based on a Korean translation of the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale. The findings suggested that the aerobics and hip-hop dancing groups

Affective distress and implantable cardioverter defibrillators: cases for psychological and behavioral interventions.

The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) may be associated with some degree of psychological maladjustment, especially in patients experiencing high rates of discharge. This article reviews the psychological literature related to ICDs and presents two case examples illustrating common psychological complications related to multiple discharges. A brief, psychological intervention can be implemented to improve patient adjustment. To explain possible processes by which psychological complications may develop in ICD patients, two well-established psychological theories of learning and beha

Effects of Aversive Classical Conditioning on Sexual Response in Women With Dyspareunia and Sexually Functional Controls.

INTRODUCTION: In dyspareunia-a somatically unexplained vulvovaginal pain associated with sexual intercourse-learned pain-related fear and inhibited sexual arousal are supposed to play a pivotal role. Based on research findings indicating that enhanced pain conditioning is involved in the etiology and maintenance of chronic pain, in the present study it was hypothesized that enhanced pain conditioning also might be involved in dyspareunia. AIM: To test whether learned associations between pain and sex negatively affect sexual response; whether women with dyspareunia show stronger aversive lear

Effect of conditioning intensity on late complications in AYA who underwent allogeneic HCT during childhood.

We retrospectively analyzed the effect of conditioning intensity on 22 late complications in 145 adolescent and young adults who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in childhood. Seventy-six patients received myeloablative conditioning (MAC), while 69 received reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC). Incidence rates of late complications (≥ 1), organ dysfunction, endocrine/metabolic abnormalities, and psychosocial issues in evaluable patients were 71.0%, 17.2%, 66.2%, and 9.0%, respectively. The prevalence of short stature, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, and g

A modern learning theory perspective on the etiology of panic disorder.

Several theories of the development of panic disorder (PD) with or without agoraphobia have emerged in the last 2 decades. Early theories that proposed a role for classical conditioning were criticized on several grounds. However, each criticism can be met and rejected when one considers current perspectives on conditioning and associative learning. The authors propose that PD develops because exposure to panic attacks causes the conditioning of anxiety (and sometimes panic) to exteroceptive and interoceptive cues. This process is reflected in a variety of cognitive and behavioral phenomena bu

Evaluation of animal welfare by the self-expression of an anxiety state.

Although mental well-being has long been accepted as an important aspect of animal welfare, the subjective feelings of farm or laboratory animals are regarded as lying beyond the scope of scientific enquiry. We now report that pharmacological conditioning of pigs with a drug, pentylenetetrazole, known to induce anxiety in man, permits investigation of the presence or absence of this psychological state during exposure to a variety of environmental stimuli encountered during normal husbandry. Such pharmacological conditioning therefore provides a valuable means to assess and improve elements of

Fear conditioning and extinction in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review.

Laboratory experiments using fear conditioning and extinction protocols help lay the groundwork for designing, testing, and optimizing innovative treatments for anxiety-related disorders. Yet, there is limited basic research on fear conditioning and extinction in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is surprising because exposure-based treatments based on associative learning principles are among the most popular and effective treatment options for OCD. Here, we systematically review and critically assess existing aversive conditioning and extinction studies of OCD. Across 12 studies, the

Phobias and Preparedness - Republished Article.

Some inadequacies of the classical conditioning analysis of phobias are discussed: phobias are highly resistant to extinction, whereas laboratory fear conditioning, unlike avoidance conditioning, extinguishes rapidly; phobias comprise a nonarbitrary and limited set of objects, whereas fear conditioning is thought to occur to an unlimited range of conditioned stimuli. Furthermore, phobias, unlike laboratory fear conditioning, are often acquired in one trial and seem quite resistant to change by "cognitive" means. An analysis of phobias using a more contemporary model of fear conditioning is pro

Sports injuries in children. Necessary consequence of competition?

Evaluation of the benefits and risks of organized children's sports is difficult, but even play activities carry risks. The benefits of participation--eg, physical conditioning, accomplishment, and enjoyment--need to be weighed against the physical and/or psychological disadvantages. Social consciousness has been raised, studies are under way, and statistics are accumulating. Physicians, school and legislative advisers, and concerned parents all have a responsibility to promote safety, to provide appropriate care, and to prevent psychological harm.

Low-Intensity Physical Exercise Improves Pain Catastrophizing and Other Psychological and Physical Aspects in Women with Fibromyalgia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterized by widespread pain and other physical and psychological features. In this study, we aimed to analyze the effect of a low-intensity physical exercise (PE) program, combining endurance training and coordination, on psychological aspects (i.e., pain catastrophizing, anxiety, depression, stress), pain perception (i.e., pain acceptance, pressure pain threshold (PPT), and quality of life and physical conditioning (i.e., self-perceived functional capacity, endurance and functional capacity, power and velocity) in women with FM. Nocturnal enuresis in children.

Thousands of Australian children suffer the unhappiness of waking most mornings in a wet bed--almost all can be helped by a sympathetic doctor. Very few of these children have significant organic or psychological problems and little investigation is indicated. Management includes: sympathy and empathy, cessation of unhelpful practices, and conditioning.
