One hundred and one female patients with vulvar condylomata acuminata were treated with the argon laser. Most were managed under regional or general anesthesia because of the large size and extent of the warts. Ten patients were lost to follow-up after the first session. Of 91 other patients, 78 (86%) were free of lesions on follow-up examinations after one or two treatments. Thirty-seven lesions from 29 patients with condylomata acuminata were comparatively studied by peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique and routine histopathology. PAP staining demonstrated papillomavirus common antigen (PCA) mostly in the granular layer of the epidermis in 22 of 37 lesions (59%) of condylomata acuminata. Presence of PCA is closely correlated with the following histopathologic findings: 1) coarse keratohyalin granules; 2) perinuclear vacuolization or koilocytotic cells in the granular layer; 3) hyperkeratosis with focal parakeratosis. Extensive and/or recurrent condylomata acuminata in 78 women were treated with the CO2 laser. Urethra, clitoris or the anal canal were involved in about one-fourth of the cases. Most were treated as outpatients with the more extensive lesions staged for multiple treatments. After a follow-up period of 6-33 months, 91% of women were free from disease and treatment failures occurred in 9%, some of which may have been new infections. No serological investigations were performed.

A retrospective investigation compared the medical records of 56 young women with abnormal Pap smears with the medical records of 60 women who comprised the control group to determine if there is a relationship between cervical dysplasia in young women and a history of condylomata acuminata. A statistically significant link between condylomata acuminata and cervical dysplasia was shown. Implications for nurses are discussed.

Ninety-four patients with condylomata acuminata of the lower genital tract and perianal region were treated with the carbon dioxide laser. Most were managed in the outpatient clinic, but 1 to 4 treatments were required depending upon extent of involvement. Of 90 patients, 75 (83.3%) were free of lesions on all follow-up examinations after initial treatment. Ten patients with condyloma acuminatum were treated successfully with carbon dioxide laser photocoagulation. There are no side effects, damage to the surrounding tissue is minimal, and, in our experience, the lesions have not recurred. It is particularly useful for lesions which are recalcitrant to other types of therapy. We now initially treat patients who have lesions in the urethral meatus with the carbon dioxide laser.

A series of 73, 28 and 172 cases of condylomata acuminata and 133, 44 and 1,237 cases of carcinoma of vulva, vagina and penis is analysed. This material was derived from a country-wide biopsy service in Uganda between the years 1964-1975.
