Dust diseases and the legacy of corporate manipulation of science and law.

BACKGROUND: The dust diseases silicosis and asbestosis were the first occupational diseases to have widespread impact on workers. Knowledge that asbestos and silica were hazardous to health became public several decades after the industry knew of the health concerns. This delay was largely influenced by the interests of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) and other asbestos mining and product manufacturing companies. OBJECTIVES: To understand the ongoing corporate influence on the science and politics of asbestos and silica exposure, including litigation defense strategies related t

Sustainable chromatographic purification of milbemectin: Application of high-speed countercurrent chromatography coupled with off-line atmospheric pressure solid analysis probe-high resolution mass spectrometry.

Isolation of valuable chemicals is an important process in reagent manufacturing for the pharmaceutical and food science industries. This process is traditionally time-consuming, expensive, and consumes vast amounts of organic solvents. Considering green chemistry and sustainability concerns, we sought to develop a sustainable chromatographic purification methodology for obtaining antibiotics by focusing on the reduction of organic solvent waste generation. Milbemectin (mixture of milbemycin A3 and milbemycin A4) was successfully purified using high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC)

Do subsidies reach the sick? Implementation challenges and equity implications of pharmaceutical subsidy reform in Iran: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceutical subsidy reforms are commonly implemented to improve access to essential medicines, strengthen financial protection, and enhance the sustainability of health systems. In Iran, the Darooyar policy was introduced to shift pharmaceutical subsidies from subsidized foreign exchange allocation toward consumer-oriented insurance coverage. Despite its policy importance, limited evidence exists regarding the implementation challenges of this reform from the perspective of health system stakeholders. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using an inductive thematic ana

Addressing Disparities in Diabetes Management Through Novel Approaches to Encourage Technology Adoption and Use.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the nation's leading drivers of disability and health care utilization, with elevated prevalence among individuals with lower education, income, and racial/ethnic minorities. Health information technology (HIT) holds vast potential for helping patients, providers, and payers to address T2D and the skyrocketing rates of chronic illness and associated health care costs. Patient portals to electronic health records (EHRs) serve as a gateway to consumer use of HIT. We found that disparities in portal use portend growing T2D disparities. Little progress has been made

Getting offshoring right.

The prospect of offshoring and outsourcing business processes has captured the imagination of CEOs everywhere. In the past five years, a rising number of companies in North America and Europe have experimented with this strategy, hoping to reduce costs and gain strategic advantage. But many businesses have had mixed results. According to several studies, half the organizations that have shifted processes offshore have failed to generate the expected financial benefits. What's more, many of them have faced employee resistance and consumer dissatisfaction. Clearly, companies have to rethink how

Behavioral Healthcare Staff Attitudes and Practices Regarding Consumer Tobacco Cessation Services.

Given the high prevalence of tobacco use among persons with behavioral health disorders, there has been much discussion about if and when tobacco cessation services should be provided to consumers. Approximately 1700 staff (who served adults and youth) from 38 public behavioral healthcare agencies in Virginia completed a survey on their attitudes and practices regarding tobacco cessation services for consumers. Results showed that most staff (88%) think tobacco cessation services should be offered and do not interfere with treatment. Most staff (57%) always/usually screened consumers for tobac

Elastic energy storage and the efficiency of movement.

Movement is an integral part of animal biology. It enables organisms to escape from danger, acquire food, and perform courtship displays. Changing the speed or vertical position of a body requires mechanical energy. This energy is typically provided by the biological motor, striated muscle. Striated muscle uses chemical (metabolic) energy to produce force, to move this force over a distance to do work, and to do this work within some time to generate power. The metabolic energy consumed in producing these mechanical outputs is a major component of an organism's energy budget, particularly duri

Absence of toxic effects in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice following subchronic administration of chromium picolinate monohydrate.

Chromium picolinate monohydrate (CPM) is a synthetic compound heavily marketed to consumers in the United States for use as a dietary supplement for muscle building and weight loss. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) tested the toxicity of this compound based on the potential for widespread consumer exposure and lack of information about its toxicity. Groups of 10 male and 10 female F344/N rats and B6C3F(1) mice were exposed to 0, 80, 240, 2000, 10,000, or 50,000 ppm CPM in feed for 13 weeks. CPM administration produced no effect on body weight gain or survival of rats or mice. Organ weight

Cross-ecosystem subsidies drive CO2 flux rates in a coastal ecotone.

Ecotones and the steep environmental gradients they represent are often hotspots of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Consumer activities can mediate ecosystem functions, including decomposition in these hotspots. For example, cross-ecosystem subsidies of marine macrophyte wrack support diverse, productive intertidal food webs on temperate sandy beaches creating hotspots of organic matter processing that are highly vulnerable to growing disturbance threats. As a proxy for wrack decomposition rates, we compared the CO2 flux from the biologically active high tide strandline of bare interti

Alcohol exacerbates murine pulmonary tuberculosis.

Alcohol consumption has been described as a risk factor for infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but its contribution to tuberculosis has been difficult to isolate from other adverse socioeconomic factors. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of alcohol consumption on pulmonary infection with M. tuberculosis in a murine model. BALB/c mice were maintained on the Lieber-DeCarli liquid ethanol diet or a liquid control diet and infected intratracheally with low-dose M. tuberculosis H37Rv. Lung organism burdens, lung and lung-associated lymph node CD4(+)- and CD8(+)- lymphocyte numbers an

Trophic transfer and biomagnification potential of environmental contaminants (heavy metals) in aquatic ecosystems.

Physical, chemical weathering and volcanic eruptions release heavy metals into soils and surface waters naturally. Contaminants from anthropogenic sources originated from industrial and municipality waste substantially modify and increase their contributions. They are then absorbed by fish gills, amphipod cuticles, and other sensitive organs of aquatic creatures. This article discusses the essences on the determination, potential and plausible factors of trophic transfer and biomagnification of environmental contaminants particularly heavy metals across aquatic ecosystem. In general, arsenic i

Corrigendum to "Persistent and Toxic Chemical Pollutants in Fish Consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States" [Sci. Total Environ. 811 (2022):152214/ DOI:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.152214].

Consumption of seafood brings health benefits but may increase the ingestion of contaminants. Compared with other ethnic groups in the U.S., Asians consume seafood more frequently. However, there is little information about how culturally specific fish consumption contributes to exposure to toxicants. In this work, we surveyed fish consumption among Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities and purchased 103 seafood samples from local markets in Chicago. Each sample was analyzed for mercury (Hg) and 92 organic chemicals including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OC

Characterizing the Flavor of New Zealand Native Plants Using Consumer-Derived Attributes and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Understanding the flavor properties of Aotearoa-New Zealand native plants is essential for their successful incorporation into foods and beverages. This study characterized the flavor of six edible plant species using consumer sensory evaluation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of volatile compounds. Standardized liquid infusions were prepared for all species, and a lexicon of 21 flavor attributes was developed through six consumer focus groups (n = 36). A Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA) evaluation with consumers (n = 121) provided attribute intensity ratings and sample overall liki

Fish oil and the management of hypertriglyceridemia.

Hypertriglyceridemia, regarded as one of the independent clinical markers of metabolic syndrome, is a frequently observed disorder that has been shown to be common in the Arab region. Epidemiologic and clinical trials demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids have the potential to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD); one of the mechanisms by which this effect is achieved is through reducing plasma triglyceride levels. There is strong scientific evidence from human trials that omega-3 fatty acids from either fish or fish oil supplements significantly reduce blood triglyceride level
