Awareness of emergency contraception among female college students in Chandigarh, India.

UNLABELLED: Adolescents and young women are at the greatest risk of unintended pregnancy because they are unlikely to see a family planning provider before or immediately after the sexual activity. Therefore, preventing unintended pregnancy among them is the important concern. Sexually active young women are clients with special needs for contraception. They are eligible to use a variety of the available contraceptives. Introduction of emergency contraception (EC) in the recent past can help them avoid such unintended pregnancies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the awareness of emergency contracep

Contraception for women in selected circumstances.

OBJECTIVE: To review new evidence regarding ten controversial issues in the use of contraceptive methods among women with special conditions and to present World Health Organization recommendations derived in part from this evidence. DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE databases for English-language articles, published between January 1995 and December 2001, for evidence relevant to ten key contraceptive method and condition combinations: combined oral contraceptive (OC) use among women with hypertension or headaches, combined OC use for emergency contraception and adverse events

Ulipristal acetate versus levonorgestrel for emergency contraception: a randomised non-inferiority trial and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emergency contraception can prevent unintended pregnancies, but current methods are only effective if used as soon as possible after sexual intercourse and before ovulation. We compared the efficacy and safety of ulipristal acetate with levonorgestrel for emergency contraception. METHODS: Women with regular menstrual cycles who presented to a participating family planning clinic requesting emergency contraception within 5 days of unprotected sexual intercourse were eligible for enrolment in this randomised, multicentre, non-inferiority trial. 2221 women were randomly assigned to r

Karman's cannula and vacuum aspirator in gynecological practice.

The charts of 340 patients who underwent an endometrial suction procedure using Karman's cannula and syringe were reviewed. The therapeutic uses of this instrument were for the treatment of chronic endometritis (18.6%), the evacuation of incomplete or missed abortion (14.6%) and hydatidiform mole (0.8%), and the retrieval of the missing tail of an intrauterine contraceptive device (1.2%). Its diagnostic indications include: the investigation of infertility (55.3%), dysfunctional uterine bleeding (8.7%), and postcoital bleeding (0.8%). The diagnostic yield of the instrument was 96.6%. Do plain plastic and copper bearing intrauterine contraceptive devices have a central mechanism of action?

The notion that the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) has a central, as well as a local action, is examined. Although the IUCD undoubtedly has a local action, certain IUCD related side effects, e.g. galactorrhoea, bloating and premenstrual syndrome and inadequate luteal function can be explained if the IUCD has some central action. The powerful postcoital anti-fertility effect of both copper-bearing and plain plastic IUCDs probably also depends to some extent on a central action. The central action of the IUCD is probably due to initiation of reflex hypothalamic activity following intra

Appropriately trained nurses are competent at inserting intrauterine devices: an audit of clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Very few nurses in the UK insert intrauterine devices (IUDs). Within King's Healthcare, nurses with the advanced family planning qualification (ENB AO8), who have also undertaken further training in IUD insertion, have done so for many years. This is a controversial issue and our aim was to evaluate whether women who had IUDs inserted by specialist nurses had significantly more problems compared with those inserted by doctors. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective, ongoing, cohort study of all IUD insertions in hospital-based family planning clinics over a 3-month period. A medical,

A systematic review and meta-analysis of attitude and knowledge involving emergency oral contraceptive use in patients and healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: Levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate are common emergency oral contraceptives (EOCs). Lack of knowledge and negative attitude toward EOCs pose barriers to the EOCs access and utilization. AIM: This study aimed to summarize the studies on the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare providers and patients on the use of EOCs. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted from conception to April 2022 using the following databases: CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Thai Journal Online. Data were extracted independently and were meta-analyzed using DerSimonian and Laird

Trends in the use of emergency contraception: an epidemiological study in Barcelona, Spain (1994-2002).

We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of women requesting emergency contraception (EC) at our emergency department over a 9-year period (1994-2002). EC accounted for 5.9% of all visits (n = 95,288) and increased from 1.26% in 1994 to 9.82% in 2002 (p < 0.001). Reasons for EC were condom problems in 79.5% of cases. EC was used only once by 93% of women. The mean daily number of visits was significantly higher in August (2.46), July (2.01) and September (2.02) than in other months (p < 0.05), and was more frequent on Sunday (3.26), Saturday (2.92) and Monday (2.05) compared

Mifepristone: contraceptive and non-contraceptive uses.

Mifepristone is an orally active progesterone antagonist. It can be used for both contraceptive and non-contraceptive clinical indications. It is a very effective drug for emergency contraception with a low incidence of side effects. There is a potential for mifepristone to be used as a once-a-month pill. There is a need, however, for a simple, inexpensive and accurate method to identify the luteinizing hormone surge before this method can be used in clinical practice. The daily administration of mifepristone offers promise as an effective method of contraception but more studies need to be do

["Hormone bomb": risks of emergency contraception from the perspective of pharmacy attendants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

This study focused on views towards emergency contraception among pharmacy attendants in Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The empirical material came from a socio-anthropological study with 20 semi-structured interviews of pharmacy attendants of both sexes (8 females and 12 males). The interviews showed negative views of emergency contraception, emphasizing its potential health risks. Interviews considered emergency contraception a "hormone bomb" that can harm the female reproductive organs and other organ systems. The pharmacy attendants highlighted the risks of "uncontrolled" or

Demographic and health impacts of women's bodily autonomy: switching prescription requirements for emergency contraceptives.

Over the past decades, most European countries switched emergency contraceptive availability from prescription to over-the-counter (OTC) status. However, the effect of OTC switches on emergency and regular contraceptive use, on demographic indicators (birth rate, abortion rate) and health outcomes (sexually transmitted diseases) varies depending on the study setting. Only Poland switched emergency contraceptives back to prescription (Rx) status after previously loosening restrictions and causal analyses of an Rx switch are lacking entirely. We employ multiple (staggered/synthetic) difference-i

Association between knowledge about levonorgestrel emergency contraception and the risk of ectopic pregnancy following levonorgestrel emergency contraception failure: a comparative survey.

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between knowledge about levonorgestrel emergency contraception (LNG-EC) and the risk of ectopic pregnancy (EP) following LNG-EC failure. METHODS: This study included 600 women who had visited the hospital with LNG-EC failure. Of these, 300 with EP and 300 with intrauterine pregnancy (IUP) were recruited to the EP group and IUP group respectively. The participants were interviewed face-to-face using a standardized questionnaire. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pearson's chi-square tests and t-test were used to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, reproducti

Requests for emergency contraception in community pharmacy: an evaluation of services provided to mystery patients.

BACKGROUND: Requests for supply of the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) through community pharmacies require consideration of a range of factors and the application of professional judgment. Pharmacists should therefore be able to follow a structured reasoning process. OBJECTIVES: The research involved an assessment of history taking and counseling by pharmacy staff through mystery patient emergency contraception product requests. METHODS: Two challenging ECP request case scenarios were developed with assessment tools. Mystery patients were trained to present the scenarios to pharmacies. A

Ectopic pregnancy following oral levonorgestrel emergency contraception use.

Levonorgestrel is used worldwide as an emergency oral contraceptive. There have been occasional reports of ectopic pregnancy after oral levonorgestrel use. We present a case of ectopic tubal pregnancy after the use of oral levonorgestrel as an emergency contraceptive in a 37-year-old woman with a history of treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis infection. She conceived after sexual intercourse on menstrual day 14 of the first menstrual cycle following a normal delivery. After salpingectomy for this right tubal pregnancy, her following pregnancy was an ectopic pregnancy in the contralateral tube,

Emergency contraception knowledge, attitudes, practices, and barriers among providers at a military treatment facility.

The safety and efficacy of postcoital administration of oral contraceptives, commonly called "emergency contraception pills" (ECPs), have been well documented; nonetheless, this method of preventing pregnancy is underused in the United States. Through the use of surveys, the current study assessed providers' knowledge, prescribing practices, attitudes, and barriers regarding ECPs at a military treatment facility in the southwest United States. Results showed a lack of knowledge of ECP provision, with 34% believing treatment had to be initiated in 48 or fewer hours, and 60% believing two doses

Knowledge of contraceptive effectiveness and method use among women in Hanoi, Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between contraceptive knowledge and type of method used. METHODS: We analyzed data from a cross-sectional study of sexually active women in Hanoi, Vietnam, not desiring pregnancy. We used linear and logistic regression to evaluate contraceptive knowledge of users of the intrauterine device (IUD), combination oral contraception (COC) and male condoms. We measured contraceptive knowledge with seven questions on relative effectiveness of methods, reversibility, covert use, contraindications and side effects. RESULTS: Respondents used IUD (n = 128), COC (n

Double Dosing Levonorgestrel-Based Emergency Contraception for Individuals With Obesity: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether dose escalation (ie, doubling the dose) of emergency contraception that contains levonorgestrel (LNG) improves pharmacodynamic outcomes in individuals with obesity. METHODS: We enrolled healthy, reproductive-age individuals with regular menstrual cycles, body mass index (BMI) higher than 30, and weight at least 176 lbs in a randomized pharmacodynamic study. After confirming ovulation (luteal progesterone level greater than 3 ng/mL), we monitored participants with transvaginal ultrasonography and blood sampling for progesterone, luteinizing hormone, and estradiol e
