Nutritional stress by means of high C:N ratios in the diet and starvation affects nitrogen isotope ratios and trophic fractionation of omnivorous copepods.

Nutritional stress, from feeding on low-quality diets or starvation, may cause changes in consumers' nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N = 15N/14N) and trophic fractionation (∆15N = δ15Nconsumer - δ15Nfood source), however, research has shown mixed results in the magnitude and the direction of the change. This is potentially more complex for omnivores whose diets span a wide range of food resources. We conducted seasonal field samplings in Patagonian lakes and analyzed the relationship between seston (SES) quality parameters and the δ15N and ∆15N of an omnivorous copepod, Boeckella gracilipes (Bg).

Sterilization of sea lice eggs with ultraviolet C light: towards a new preventative technique for aquaculture.

BACKGROUND: Sea lice infestations on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms are a considerable burden on the industry and put wild salmonid populations at risk. Frequent delousing treatments are necessary to keep lice densities below allowable limits, but currently viable treatments have drawbacks in terms of financial cost, animal welfare, or environmental impacts. We tested if 254 nm ultraviolet C light (UVC) could function as a new preventative method to suppress reproduction of salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) by sterilizing fertilized eggs. We exposed salmon lice eggstrings to a range o

Design of Gaussia luciferase-based bioluminescent stem-loop probe for sensitive detection of HIV-1 nucleic acids.

Here we describe the design of a bioluminescent stem-loop probe for the sensitive detection of HIV-1 spliced RNA. In this study, we employed Gaussia luciferase (GLuc), a bioluminescent protein that has several advantages over other bioluminescent proteins, including smaller size, higher bioluminescent intensity, and chemical and thermal stability. GLuc was chemically conjugated to the DABCYL-modified stem-loop probe (SLP) and was purified with a 2-step process to remove unconjugated GLuc and SLP. The binding of the target RNA to the loop region of the SLP results in the open conformation separ

Reassessing the species status of Pseudodiaptomus malayalus Wellershaus, 1969 and P. binghami Sewell, 1912 (Calanoida: Pseudodiaptomidae) from India based on morphology and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene sequences.

Pseudodiaptomus binghami Sewell, 1912 was first described from the Rangoon River (now Yangon River) estuary, Myanmar. Pseudodiaptomus malayalus Wellershaus, 1969 previously known as P. binghami malayalus, is a typical brackish-water calanoid copepod from Cochin Estuary, Kerala. Morphological examination of P. malayalus and P. binghami collected from Cochin Estuary and the Nambur canal in Andhra Pradesh revealed crucial differences between the two congeners. Female specimens of P. malayalus exhibited marked differences from those described by Wellershaus. They are (1) the number of terminal spi

Determining the Advantages, Costs, and Trade-Offs of a Novel Sodium Channel Mutation in the Copepod Acartia hudsonica to Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST).

The marine copepod Acartia hudsonica was shown to be adapted to dinoflagellate prey, Alexandrium fundyense, which produce paralytic shellfish toxins (PST). Adaptation to PSTs in other organisms is caused by a mutation in the sodium channel. Recently, a mutation in the sodium channel in A. hudsonica was found. In this study, we rigorously tested for advantages, costs, and trade-offs associated with the mutant isoform of A. hudsonica under toxic and non-toxic conditions. We combined fitness with wild-type: mutant isoform ratio measurements on the same individual copepod to test our hypotheses. A

The effect of diet on ontogenic development of the digestive tract in juvenile reared long snout seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus.

Ontogenetic development of the digestive tract and associated organs in long snout seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus juveniles was morphologically and histologically examined from the time of release from the male's pouch until 72 h after the first meal. When released from the male's pouch, juvenile seahorses are small adult replicates. This means that unlike other teleost fish larvae, the first developmental phase has already taken place, and juveniles are morphologically prepared and able to feed on live prey immediately following parturition. At this stage, the buccopharynx, oesophagus, and i

Triploid and diploid Atlantic salmon show similar susceptibility to infection with salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

BACKGROUND: Sea lice infection is the most expensive disease factor for Atlantic salmon sea-cage farming. For triploid salmon to be accepted as a commercial possibility, investigation of susceptibility of triploid salmon to sea lice infection is a fundamental milestone. The susceptibility of diploid and triploid salmon to infection with Lepeophtheirus salmonis was examined in a tank trial in Scotland, a tank trial in Norway and a cage trial in Scotland. RESULTS: Following a single infection challenge, results indicated a significant correlation between fish size and the number of attached sea

Caligidae infestation in Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer, Bloch 1790 cultured at different salinity in Malaysia.

The Asian seabass is euryhaline, therefore it is interesting to describe the infestation and survival of caligids at varying salinity on the host. In this study, two different brackish water culture systems with monoculture and polyculture practices were investigated for the occurrence of Caligus spp. on Lates calcarifer. Polyculture practices mainly consisted of snapper (Lutjanus spp.), grouper (Epinephelus spp.) and seabass (L. calcarifer), while the monoculture was stocked with only seabass. A total of 777 Caligus spp. specimens were isolated from the sampling in 2009, consisting of three s

Development of vaccines against sea lice.

A review of efforts to develop a vaccine against sea lice is presented together with analysis of the rationale behind the approaches and potential future directions. Vaccines against the caligid copepod, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, have the potential to be a cost-effective means of controlling the infection and avoid many of the disadvantages of medicine treatments. However, research towards such vaccines is in its infancy and approaches so far used have met with little or no success. Most strategies for sea louse vaccines have adopted methods used for vaccines against other ectoparasites. A vacc

The brain and the corresponding sense organs in calanoid copepods - Evidence of vestiges of compound eyes.

Copepoda is one of the crustacean taxa with still unresolved phylogenetic relationships within Tetraconata. Recent phylogenomic studies place them close to Malacostraca and Cirripedia. Little is known about the morphological details of the copepod nervous system, and the available data are sometimes contradictory. We investigated several representatives of the subgroup Calanoida using immunohistochemical labeling against alpha-tubulin and various neuroactive substances, combining this with confocal laser scanning analysis and 3D reconstruction. Our results show that the studied copepods exhibi

Feeding ecology of Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) living in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

Ellochelon vaigiensis (squaretail mullet) adapts to a wide salt spectrum, grows quickly and is easy to raise with other species, so it is the object of attention in aquaculture. Information on the biology and ecology of the species, diet, in particular, is still scattered. Here, we explore the feeding habit, feeding intensity, and food composition of the squaretail mullet. A total of 942 fish (526 males and 416 females) were collected from November 2020 to October 2021 at four coastal sites in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The squaretail mullet is an algi-omnivorous fish, as their relative gut le

Effects of diclofenac on the swimming behavior and antioxidant enzyme activities of the freshwater interstitial crustacean Bryocamptus pygmaeus (Crustacea, Harpacticoida).

Diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most widespread pharmaceutical compounds found in freshwaters as a pseudo-persistent pollutant due to its continuous release from point and diffuse sources, being its removal in Wastewater Treatment Plants incomplete. Moreover, DCF is particularly persistent in interstitial habitats and potentially toxic for the species that spend their whole life cycle among the same sediment grains. This study is aimed at offering a first contribution to the assessment of DCF effects on freshwater invertebrate species living in the interstitial habitats of springs, rivers, lake

Recovering host DNA from their invertebrate parasites: a minimally invasive genetic sampling tool for the critically endangered flapper skate.

Obtaining host DNA from the blood meals of their invertebrate parasites (invertebrate-derived DNA, iDNA) has proven to be a powerful tool in terrestrial ecology for detecting vertebrates to answer questions relating to host community diversity. However, the use of iDNA in the marine environment is limited. Here, we assessed the efficacy of sampling parasites from the critically endangered flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius) to determine whether iDNA could (i) identify the host species and (ii) obtain host haplotype sequences. In total, 34 copepods (Trebius caudatus specimens, n = 30; Caligus

Astaxanthin and thiamine dynamics in the copepod Temora longicornis in response to ultraviolet radiation exposure.

Several aquatic top predators suffer from deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine), sometimes combined with low levels of carotenoid pigments, e.g., astaxanthin. The mechanisms leading to correlations between carotenoid pigmentation and thiamine status are not known. These substances and their precursors are produced by single-celled organisms and transferred to higher trophic levels via zooplankton. However, little is known about the factors regulating this transfer process and how it is affected by environmental stressors and zooplankton diet. We therefore exposed a common copepod, Temora longico

The digestion time for salmon louse (Lepeoptheirus salmonis) in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in relation to freshness, developmental stage, and temperature.

Sea lice infestations cause significant economic losses in the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry. To biologically control sea lice at farming sites, cleaner fish such as lumpfish are employed. However, the efficacy of lumpfish is under constant debate, primarily due to limited knowledge of digestion times, which makes it difficult to interpret the number of salmon lice found in the stomach contents of dissected lumpfish. The aim of this study was to provide quantitative estimates of the degradation of salmon lice over a period of 12 days. After an acclimation period of approximately one wee

Subchronic Effects of Tetrachloroethylene on Two Freshwater Copepod Species: Implications for Groundwater Risk Assessment.

Aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons, notably tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]), are persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and/or very persistent, mobile, and toxic (vPMT) groundwater pollutants, often exceeding safe drinking water thresholds. The present study delves into the groundwater risk assessment of PCE with a novel focus on the sensitivity of stygobitic species-organisms uniquely adapted to groundwater environments. Through a comparative analysis of the subchronic effects of PCE on the locomotion behavior of two copepod species, the stygobitic Moraria sp. and the

Lufenuron treatment temporarily represses gene expression and affects the SUMO pathway in liver of Atlantic salmon.

Lufenuron is a benzoylurea insecticide currently in use to combat sea lice infestation in salmon aquaculture in Chile. With pending approval in Norway, the aim of this work was to study the uptake and toxicity of lufenuron in liver tissue of Atlantic salmon. Juvenile salmon weighing 40 g were given a standard 7-day oral dose, and bioaccumulation and transcriptional responses in the liver were examined 1 day after the end-of-treatment (day 8) and after 1 week of elimination (day 14). Bioaccumulation levels of lufenuron were 29 ± 3 mg/kg at day 8 and 14 ± 1 mg/kg at day 14, indicating relatively
