Giant placental chorioangiomas associated with fetal hyperdynamic circulation complications are rare to see. Here, we summarized a case of giant placental chorioangioma associated with fetal anemia and heart failure treated by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with cordocentesis and intrauterine transfusion. The sonographic appearance of the placental chorioangioma was atypical which was isoechoic with unclear boundary. RFA was performed successfully at 27 weeks of gestation, when the chorioangioma has increased to 17.0 × 10.6 × 12.3 cm3 . Unfortunately, intrauterine fetal demise was foun

Before the 20th week of gestation, the most common cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis is chromosomal abnormalities. Herein, we report a case of fetal hydrops, anemia, and intrauterine growth retardation that presented at 27 weeks of gestation with a negative chromosomal abnormality screening. Cordocentesis and karyotype analysis revealed fetal pancytopenia and Down syndrome. Down syndrome rarely presents with fetal hydrops and anemia. Therefore, when hydrops and anemia are diagnosed, especially in the second trimester of gestation, the possibility of Down syndrome should be kept in mind. In ad

The prenatal diagnosis of congenital transmission of Chagas' disease in a pregnant woman with the indeterminate form of the disease is reported. Sonography revealed fetal hydrops at 31 weeks' gestation. Anti-Trypanosoma cruzi IgM and IgG antibodies were negative in the fetal blood sampled by cordocentesis, but T. cruzi trypomastigotes were found in its buffy coat. Owing to anemia, in utero exchange transfusion was undertaken, but fetal demise ensued. Labor was induced and a stillborn infant weighing 2030 g was delivered. The pathological examination revealed placentitis and meningoencephalitis

Three main methods of prenatal diagnosis (Amniocentesis AMC, Chorionic villi sampling CVS and Cordocentesis FBS) have been used in Perinatal Centre of Central Bohemia. The chromosomal abnormalities in a group of 3,098 patients have been detected in 1.4% of fetuses. The inherited disorders were diagnosed using DNA analysis and biochemical examination of amniotic fluid. X-linked diseases in a group of 68 patients in 30.8% of fetuses have been diagnosed and inborn error of metabolism in a group of 29 indicated patients in 17.2% of fetuses were diagnosed. The incidence of fetal losses before 28th

The concentrations of alpha-1-microglobulin, beta-2-microglobulin, and retinol binding protein were determined in fetal blood sampled by cordocentesis. The blood values of 126 fetuses without ultrasonographic findings of urinary tract abnormalities as controls were found to be independent of the week of gestation. In nine fetuses affected by a severe bilateral renal dysplasia or agenesis, elevated values of alpha-1-microglobulin but normal values of retinol binding protein were obtained. The authors recommend the determination of alpha-1-microglobulin and, with some restriction, also of beta-2

A case of May-Hegglin anomaly, a rare autosomal dominant thrombocytopenia, is reported. This disorder is characterized by giant platelets, basophilic inclusion bodies within the cytoplasm of granulocytes and an occasional bleeding tendency. This bleeding tendency depends on the platelet count. The fetuses of such patients run the risk of intracranial hemorrhage in utero and during the early neonatal period following vaginal delivery. Prenatal diagnosis of this disorder has not yet been reported. We describe a case of this disorder, diagnosed in pregnancy, which, following prenatal diagnosis of

Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), also called cordocentesis, is a newly introduced technique that enables blood samples to be obtained from the fetus in utero for a variety of conditions. The major applications are for the diagnosis of fetal infections, karyotype analysis, fetal growth retardation, diagnosis of hematologic conditions, and metabolic evaluation. This procedure is gaining in popularity, since it provides direct information on fetal blood status. It can be applied to therapeutic manipulations such as in utero transfusions or drug administration. The procedure is remark

We describe the abnormal sonographic findings in the brain of a 26-week fetus, which increased the suspicion of isolated lissencephaly. Follow-up ultrasound examination and MRI depicted diffuse cortical agyria, microcephaly, hypotelorism, and proptosis. Cordocentesis showed a normal 46,XY karyotype, and no short arm deletion of chromosome 17 was detectable. Postmortem examination confirmed complete agyria of the whole fetal brain. Early detection of fetal microcephaly and other cranial abnormalities can be a sign of isolated lissencephaly and need to be evaluated carefully with ultrasound and

We report on a case of fetal goitrous hypothyroidism confirmed by the study of fetal thyroid function. Two injections of intra amniotic levo-thyroxine were performed at 35 and 36 WA. The serial ultra sonographic examination showed the disappearance of the fetal goiter. A healthy baby were delivered by cesarean section at 37 WA. At birth, the thyroid gland was slightly enlarged and the neonatal thyroid hormones were within the normal range. This case suggests that cordocentesis is a reliable method of assessing the status of the fetal thyroid, and that even as early as 35 WA a prenatal treatmen

BACKGROUND: Fetal anemia is a common result of alloimmunization and is an important cause of fetal congestive heart failure resulting in heart dilation. Fetuses suspected of having heart failure present a higher Cardiofemoral Index and an increase in plasma BNP levels, because the cardiac hormonal system is activated by increased heart wall stretch due to increased left ventricular volume and pressure overload.
METHODS: Our group studied 33 pregnant women (22-31 weeks' gestation at the first cordocentesis) referred for intrauterine fetal transfusion due to severe red blood cells isoimmunizati

OBJECTIVE: Middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity has been successfully used for timing the first cordocentesis in fetuses who are at risk for anemia because of maternal red cell alloimmunization. The effects on Doppler velocimetry after the intrauterine transfusion of adult blood to these fetuses are unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of Doppler methods for the prediction of severe anemia in fetuses who had undergone 1 previous intrauterine transfusion.
STUDY DESIGN: Doppler examination of middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity was performed be

The objective of this review is to estimate the risk of severe thrombocytopenia at birth and minor or major morbidity for the infant of a pregnancy complicated by immune thrombocytopenic purpura. English language publications on immune thrombocytopenic purpura in pregnancy from January 1980 to December 1990 were used. Manuscripts considered for infant risk assessment fulfilled the following criteria: 10 or more entrants, reported fetal platelet samples (cordocentesis, scalp sampling or cord sample at birth), and provided all infant platelet data. All other data not fulfilling these criteria ar

We report a very rare constitutional interstitial deletion of chromosome 1p defined within 1p34.3-36.11 bands with an intact pter. The diagnosis was made by standard cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies on a cordocentesis specimen obtained at 21 weeks gestation. Termination of pregnancy was performed at 22 weeks gestation due to the ultrasound diagnosis of congenital heart disease. Autopsy confirmed congenital heart disease (cardiomegaly, Ebstein's anomaly, secundum atrial septal defect, subendocardial fibroelastosis), pulmonary lymphangiectasis, a high arched pal

In order to gain more insight into the association between alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and fetal chromosomal disorders, especially Down's syndrome, we measured AFP in fetal serum, amniotic fluid, and maternal serum at cordocentesis. We compared the concentration and gradient of AFP in these three compartments. Our data confirm earlier findings on second-trimester fetal serum AFP concentration. The results indicate that low maternal serum AFP in pregnancies with fetal chromosomal disorders could result from an impaired fetal kidney function as well as from impaired membrane or placental passage of

Fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is a rare condition that requires early diagnosis and appropriate treatment due to its potentially severe consequences. We report a case of massive FMH presenting as decreased fetal movement, fetal hydrops, and intracranial hemorrhage at 24 weeks. Treatment considerations were made and amniocentesis, fetal blood sampling, and fetal blood transfusion via cordocentesis were performed. Recurrent FMH required subsequent fetal transfusion 2 days later. Surveillance was continued twice weekly until the patient delivered a viable infant at 38 weeks after spontaneous labo

A large cardiac rhabdomyoma protruding into the left ventricle was diagnosed in a fetus at 21+2 weeks of gestation by grey-scale echocardiography. Obstruction to left ventricular outflow was ruled out by colour and spectral Doppler echocardiography. No other abnormalities were noted and karyotyping by cordocentesis revealed trisomy 21 (47,XY,+21). Post-mortem examination after termination of pregnancy confirmed the prenatal diagnosis of cardiac rhabdomyoma and in addition revealed fetal tuberous sclerosis. Demonstration of cardiac rhabdomyoma by prenatal ultrasound should raise suspicion of th

Small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMC) are still a major problem in clinical cytogenetics as they cannot be identified or characterized unambiguously by conventional cytogenetics alone. On the other hand, and perhaps more importantly in prenatal settings, there is a challenging situation for counseling how to predict the risk for an abnormal phenotype, especially in cases with a de novo sSMC. Here we report on the prenatal diagnosis of a mosaic tetrasomy 18p due to presence of an sSMC in a fetus without abnormal sonographic signs. For a 26-year-old, gravida 2 (para 1) amniocentesis was

We report the case of a 36-year old pregnant woman with a Kell alloimmunization (anti-K1), probably secondary to a previous blood transfusion, and a severe hemolytic disease of the fetus. Once the first fetal blood transfusion by cordocentesis was performed, we started treatment with repeated plasmapheresis to maintain anti-K1 titer below 1:32. With this scheme we did not need to perform a second intrauterine fetal blood transfusion and only mild anemia was found in the newborn. Taking into account that the rate of serious complications with plasmapheresis is lower than that related with intra
