Leveraging Biochar Amendments to Enhance Food Security and Plant Resilience Under Climate Change.

Climate change poses significant risks to food security and contributes to widespread soil degradation. Effective strategies are urgently needed to mitigate its impacts and ensure stable crop production and food quality. Biochar has shown strong potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and immobilize soil contaminants such as heavy metals and organic pollutants. These benefits can lead to increased crop yields, improved nutritional quality, and reduced uptake of harmful substances by plants. This review summarizes the possible mechanisms through which biochar…

Pesticide runoff from energy crops: A threat to aquatic invertebrates?

The European Union aims to reach a 10% share of biofuels in the transport sector by 2020. The major burden is most likely to fall on already established annual energy crops such as rapeseed and cereals for the production of biodiesel and bioethanol, respectively. Annual energy crops are typically cultivated in intensive agricultural production systems, which require the application of pesticides. Agricultural pesticides can have adverse effects on aquatic invertebrates in adjacent streams. We assessed the relative ecological risk to aquatic invertebrates associated with the chemical pest manag

Elevated methylmercury production in mercury-contaminated paddy soil resulted from the favorable dissolved organic matter variation created by algal decomposition.

Algae-derived organic matter (AOM) may considerably regulate methylmercury (MeHg) production and accumulation in the paddy fields by changing the soil-dissolved OM (SDOM) properties. In this study, a 25-day microcosm experiment was performed to compare the responding mechanisms of MeHg production in the Hg-contaminated paddy soil-water system to the input of algae-, rice-, and rape-derived OMs. Results showed that algal decomposition could release much more cysteine and sulfate than crop straws. Compared with crop straw-derived OMs, AOM input greatly increased the dissolved organic carbon conc

Combating an Invasive Boxwood Pathogen - Calonectria pseudonaviculata - in the United States by Shifting Production to Less-Susceptible Cultivars.

Boxwood blight (BB) caused by Calonectria pseudonaviculata (Cps), an economically devastating disease affecting everyone in the supply chain from growers to gardeners, was first officially documented in the United States in 2011. This disease has taken a heavy toll on boxwood, an iconic landscape plant and the number one evergreen nursery crop. Instead of abandoning boxwood production and switching to other evergreens, growers in the United States, informed by the latest research, have elected to combat this disease. One of the strategies employed has been to shift boxwood production from high

First observation-based study on surface O3 trend in Indo-Gangetic Plain: Assessment of its impact on crop yield.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is an important air pollutant which causes substantial losses in crop production. Increasing O3 levels in India particularly in Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) is a major issue as it is reducing the crop yield. The present study is an attempt to determine the O3 and its precursor trend using continuous ground-based observations at a suburban site in IGP. The study focuses on the overall characteristics of annual, monthly, diurnal and hourly measurements of O3. Annual mean values of O3 have shown an increment of 19.2% from 2010 to 2015. Similarly, nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels i…

Mast seeding mitigates the negative demographic effects of conspecific adults on rowan seedling survival.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Seedling mortality filters tree recruitment, yet we know little about whether the year in which a seedling is produced leaves a demographic signal after emergence. This gap is central for mast-seeding species, where seed crops vary widely among years and may generate cohorts that differ in offspring quality. We tested whether the size of the seed crop from which a seedling cohort comes predicted subsequent seedling survival, and whether this effect depended on seedling size, age, and conspecific neighbourhood context. METHODS: We used 15-years of data monitoring the estab

Biosafety management and commercial use of genetically modified crops in China.

As a developing country with relatively limited arable land, China is making great efforts for development and use of genetically modified (GM) crops to boost agricultural productivity. Many GM crop varieties have been developed in China in recent years; in particular, China is playing a leading role in development of insect-resistant GM rice lines. To ensure the safe use of GM crops, biosafety risk assessments are required as an important part of the regulatory oversight of such products. With over 20 years of nationwide promotion of agricultural biotechnology, a relatively well-developed reg

Development of low-cost formulations of plant growth-promoting bacteria to be used as inoculants in beneficial agricultural technologies.

Phosphorus is one of the main macronutrients for plant development. Despite its large deposits in soils, it is scarcely available for plants. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, belonging to the group of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are capable of mobilizing deposits of insoluble phosphates in the soil. The use of PGPR as inoculants provides an environmentally sustainable approach to increase crop production. The effectiveness of inoculants depends on their proper production, formulation and storage in order to ensure the application of the required number of viable microbial cell…

[Screening for the Priority Crops in Over-standard Planting Region Based on the Difference in Arsenic and Cadmium Accumulated in Crops].

Conducting the screening and replanting of crops with low accumulation of heavy metals can effectively reduce the risk of heavy metal accumulation in agricultural products. However, current research focuses more on the screening of crops with low accumulation of a single heavy metal. Target crops also focus more on single-type crops and varieties. Research on the accumulation differences in arsenic and cadmium in different crop types and the priority recommendation list for the planting of low-accumulation crops is limited. This study used a combination of literature data meta-analysis and fie
