Oxygen-Generating Cyanobacteria Powered by Upconversion-Nanoparticles-Converted Near-Infrared Light for Ischemic Stroke Treatment.

Stroke is one of most common causes of death and disability. Most of neuroprotective agents fail to rescue neurons from cerebral ischemic insults, mainly because of targeting downstream cascading events, such as excitotoxicity, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and inflammation, rather than improving hypoxia that initially occurs. Here, we report a near-infrared light (NIR)-driven nanophotosynthesis biosystem capable of generating oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide, thus rescuing neurons from ischemia toward treating stroke. Through cerebral delivery of S. elongatus that spontaneously photosy

Bridging Cyanobacteria to Neurodegenerative Diseases: A New Potential Source of Bioactive Compounds against Alzheimer's Disease.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) represent a drawback in society given the ageing population. Dementias are the most prevalent NDs, with Alzheimer's disease (AD) representing around 70% of all cases. The current pharmaceuticals for AD are symptomatic and with no effects on the progression of the disease. Thus, research on molecules with therapeutic relevance has become a major focus for the scientific community. Cyanobacteria are a group of photosynthetic prokaryotes rich in biomolecules with confirmed activity in pathologies such as cancer, and with feasible potential in NDs such as AD. In th…

Modulation of carbonic anhydrase activity in two nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria, Nostoc calcicola and Anabaena sp.

The activity of enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) was investigated in two diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp. (ARM 629) and Nostoc calcicola, in the presence of CO2/NaHCO3 and different inhibitors. The CA activity increased when the cells were pretreated with a high concentration of CO2/NaHCO3 and then transferred to ambient level CO2. Maximum activity of CA was observed after 8 h of incubation in light on transfer of cells from high Ci to ambient level CO2, and was low when incubated in dark. Addition of the photosynthetic inhibitor DCMU brought about a differential reduction in CA activity…

Co-cultures from Plants and Cyanobacteria: A New Way for Production Systems in Agriculture and Bioprocess Engineering.

Due to the global increase in the world population, it is not possible to ensure a sufficient food supply without additional nitrogen input … leases ammonia, which damages surface waters through acidification and eutrophication. Diazotrophic cyanobacteria, which usually form a natural, stable biofilm, can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and release it into the environment. Thus, they could provide an alternative to artificial fertilizers. In addition to this, biofilms stabilize soils and thus protec …

Harmful cyanobacteria-diatom/dinoflagellate blooms and their cyanotoxins in freshwaters: A nonnegligible chronic health and ecological hazard.

Human and ecological health depends on the vitality of freshwater systems, but these are increasingly threatened by cyanotoxins released from harmful algal blooms (HABs). Periodic cyanotoxin production, although undesirable, may be tolerable when there is enough time for cyanotoxins to degrade and dissipate in the environment, but the year-round presence of these toxins will be a chronic health for humans and ecosystems. The purpose of this critical review is to document the seasonal shifts of algal species and their ecophysiological acclimatation to dynamic environmental conditions. We discus

Production of phycobiliproteins, bioplastics and lipids by the cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. treating secondary effluent in a biorefinery approach.

Cyanobacteria have been identified as promising organisms to reuse nutrients from waste effluents and produce valuable compounds such as lipids, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), and pigments. However, almost all studies on cyanobacterial biorefineries have been performed under lab scale and short cultivation periods. The present study evaluates the cultivation of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. in a pilot scale 30 L semi-continuous photobioreactor fed with secondary effluent for a period of 120 days to produce phycobiliproteins, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and lipids. To this end, the harveste…

Impact of water level fluctuations on the development of phytoplankton in a large subtropical reservoir: implications for the management of cyanobacteria.

Lake water level fluctuations (WLF) are an important factor driving the selection and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton and potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria. Nevertheless, the relative importance of environmental drivers connected to WLF may be completely different, depending on the typology and use of waterbodies, latitude and climatic regimes. In this study, we investigated the impact of WLF in a large subtropical reservoir in south-eastern China (Hongfeng Reservoir, Guizhou Province). The study was based on monthly samplings carried out in 2014 in six stations. The strong increase in th…

Consumption of toxic benthic cyanobacteria by two common demersal fish: Growth, antioxidant and liver histopathology responses.

Benthic freshwater cyanobacteria have the potential to produce toxins. Compared with more extensively studied plankton species, little is known about the impact of harmful benthic cyanobacteria on aquatic organisms. As demersal fish are usually in direct contact with benthic cyanobacteria, it is important to understand their interactive effects. This study investigated the physio-chemical responses of two demersal fish (Xenocypris davidi and Crucian carp) after exposure to benthic Oscillatoria (producing cylindrospermopsin, 2 × 106 cells/mL) for 7 days. Interestingly, benthic Oscillatoria had …

Microalgae and Cyanobacteria in the Obesity Evidence Landscape: A PRISMA-ScR Scoping Review with Mechanistic and Safety Mapping.

Microalgae and cyanobacteria are investigated for compounds that may relate to obesity and metabolic phenotypes, yet the evidence base remains scattered and inconsistently reported. We conducted a PRISMA-ScR scoping review of PubMed, Europe PMC, and OpenAlex and mapped eligible full-text studies to a controlled vocabulary covering intervention concepts, mechanistic pathway nodes, and obesity-related outcome domains. Of 2651 reports sought for full text, 936/2651 (35.3%) were not retrieved; therefore, evidence maps should be interpreted as conditioned on full-text accessibility. We included 836…

Biocrust Mosses and Cyanobacteria Exhibit Distinct Carbon Uptake Responses to Variations in Precipitation Amount and Frequency.

Dryland organisms exhibit varied responses to changes in precipitation, including event size, frequency, and soil moisture duration, influencing carbon uptake and reserve management strategies. This principle, central to the pulse-reserve paradigm, has not been thoroughly evaluated in biological soil crusts (biocrusts), essential primary producers on dryland surfaces. We conducted two experiments to investigate carbon uptake in biocrusts under different precipitation regimes. In the first, we applied a gradient of watering amounts to biocrusts dominated by moss or cyanobacteria, hypothesising …

Deposition of airborne cyanobacteria and microalgae in the human respiratory tract (Baltic Sea coastal zone, Poland).

Scientific research confirms the harmful effects of airborne cyanobacteria and microalgae. However, determining human exposure to these microorganisms remains a challenge. The six-stage Tisch impactor was used to collect bioaerosols from April to September 2020 in the coastal zone of the southern Baltic. The MPPD model was used for estimation of regional, lobar, and generation deposition of microorganisms in human respiratory tract. The mass deposition fraction of cyanobacteria and microalgae in the head region gradually increased with the aerosol size. The maximum deposition fractions in the …

Advances and new horizons in metabolic engineering of heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria for enhanced lactic acid production.

Bacteria species such as E.Coli, Lactobacilli, and pediococci play an important role as starter strains in fermentation food or polysaccharides into lactic acid. These bacteria were metabolically engineered using multiple proven genome editing methods to enhance relevant phenotypes. The efficacy of these procedures varies depending on the editing tool used and researchers' ability to pick suitable recombinants, which significantly increased genome engineering throughput. Cyanobacteria produce oxygenic photosynthesis and play an important role in carbon dioxide fixing. The fixed carbon dioxide …

Spatial and temporal characterization of cyanobacteria blooms in the Mississippi Sound and their relationship to the Bonnet Carré Spillway openings.

During the spring and summer of 2019, an unprecedented cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) was responsible for beach advisories on 25 beaches along the Mississippi Sound for over 3 months. Due to the preceding heavy rainfall and flooding within the Mississippi River watershed, for the first time in history, the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) opened twice in one year during 2019. The coastal cyanoHAB coincided with the second BCS opening. The main objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the potential for using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ocean color…

Excitonic energy transfer in red algal Photosystem I reveals an evolutionary bridge between cyanobacteria and plants.

Photosystem I (PSI) converts light into chemical energy with near-unity quantum efficiency, yet its energy-transfer and charge-separation mechanisms remain debated. Evolution has diversified PSI architectures: Cyanobacterial PSI trimers confine red-shifted pigments to the core, whereas plant PSI-Light Harvesting Complex Isupercomplexes incorporate extensive peripheral red and charge-transfer states that reshape trapping. The unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae exemplifies functional diversification across distinct evolutionary branches, combining a photosystem II and plant-like monome…

A novel recombinant PHB production platform in filamentous cyanobacteria avoiding nitrogen starvation while preserving cell viability.

During the past decades, the importance of developing sustainable, carbon dioxide (CO2)-neutral and biodegradable alternatives to conventional plastic has become evident in the context of global pollution issues. Therefore, heterotrophic bacteria such as Cupriavidus sp. have been intensively explored for the synthesis of the biodegradable polymer polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). PHB is also naturally produced by a variety of phototrophic cyanobacteria, which only need sunlight and CO2, thereby allowing a CO2 negative, eco-friendly synthesis of this polymer. However, a major drawback of the use of cy…

Key drivers of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria in South Korean eutrophic waters determined with data-driven models.

The rise in cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs), driven by eutrophication and climate change, necessitates understanding cyanotoxin conditions to mitigate risks. However, limited studies have explored the influencing factors of cyanobacterial community and cyanotoxins in freshwaters using large datasets and data-driven models (DDMs). This study examines cyanobacterial composition across regions and relates it to microcystin-LR, -RR, -LA, -YR, -LF, and -LY as well as to the taste and odor compounds geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. It also assesses the impact of environmental factors usin…
