Immature defense mechanisms mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and onset of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has converged to suggest that childhood trauma may contribute to bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to investigate the patterns of childhood trauma among patients with bipolar I (BD-I) and bipolar II (BD-II) disorders, according to DSM-IV and in contrast with healthy volunteers. We also explored whether the relationship between childhood trauma and onset of bipolar disorder is mediated by immature defense mechanisms. METHODS: Participants were patients with BD-I (n=44) and BD-II (n = 42), and healthy controls (HCs, n = 43). Childhood traumatic experience…

Evaluation of defense mechanisms in adult patients with panic disorder: before and after treatment.

Patients with acute panic disorder (PD) use a more maladaptive pattern of defense mechanisms. This study investigated the use of defense mechanisms by patients with acute symptomatic PD and those in complete remission. Thirty-three patients and 33 controls were evaluated by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The defense mechanisms were evaluated by the Defense Style Questionnaire at the beginning of the study and after 16 weeks of sertraline treatment. Panic disordered patients used more neurotic (4.6 vs. 3.6; p = 0.003) and immature (3.6 vs. 3.0; p = 0.024) defenses at baselin…

Inhalation studies of Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash in animals. III. Host defense mechanisms.

The effects of inhalation exposure of mice or rats to 9.4 mg/m3 volcanic ash, 2.5 mg/m3 SO2, or both on host defense mechanisms were assessed. Cytologic changes in pulmonary lavage fluid included an increase in percentage polymorphonuclear leukocytes due to SO2 exposure and an increase in eosinophils due to ash. SO2 and ash also produced decreases in percentage alveolar macrophages. In the case of ash-exposed animals, this decrease was offset by an increase in lymphocytes. Total cell counts and viability were not affected by any of the exposures. Pulmonary clearance mechanisms were affected in…

Mechanisms and Application Prospects of Nicotine from Plant Defense to the Frontiers of Bioengineering.

Despite significant progress in understanding the regulatory mechanisms of nicotine synthesis and in reduction strategies, the complex roles of nicotine in metabolism, stress responses, and bioactive potential remain underexplored. This review provides a systematic and multidimensional overview of nicotine research, including its biosynthesis, regulatory network, ecological functions, and application potential. In contrast to approaches primarily focused on nicotine reduction or elimination, we propose an integrated framework that connects core metabolic pathways, ecosystem-level interactions,

Envisaging the role of plant Small RNAs: A comprehensive review on antiviral defense mechanisms.

Plant viruses continue to impose severe constraints on global agriculture, often leading to substantial yield and economic losses. Conventional management strategies such as vector control and resistance breeding frequently fail to provide durable and broad-spectrum protection due to rapid evolution of virus, their dependence on host cellular machinery and the lack of effective antiviral compounds. These shortcomings have led researchers to increasingly explore molecular approaches, with RNA interference (RNAi) emerging as a precise and sustainable strategy for managing plant viral diseases. R

Suggestibility, Psychic Pain, and Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Defense Mechanisms.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an increased self-perception of one's own appearance and an intense aspiration for beauty, which may elevate the likelihood of being easily suggestible, cause mental suffering, and impair ego functions. This study investigated the direct and indirect impacts of suggestibility and psychic pain on symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) through the mediating role of defense mechanisms. The study encompassed 150 BDD patients chosen through purposive sampling in a cross-sectional design. The data were collected using the Stanford Hypnotic Susce…

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato Employs Several Escape Mechanisms to Bypass the Human Defense System.

Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) through Ixodes tick bites, presents diverse clinical manifestations and may lead to persistent symptoms. This review summarizes current knowledge on the pathogen-host interactions and immune responses. Early infection can be influenced by tick saliva, which suppresses local host defense and promotes spirochete survival, and by pattern recognition receptors activating proinflammatory cascades. Bbsl employs a variety of immune evasion strategies, notably impairing antigen presentation-through disruption of MHC II and IFN-γ p

Shame, tonic immobility, and reactions to stressful events as phylogenetically conserved submissive defense mechanisms.

Shame, tonic immobility, and passive reactions to stressful events are phylogenetically conserved, obligatory, submissive defense reactions. Behavior, biology, genetics, evolutionary theories, and theories of humans as ultra-social animals are integrated to expand the understanding of these defense reactions in ways that are missing from current theories. In Study 1, 445 undergraduates selected the event that caused them the most shame, the event that produced their greatest inability to move or speak, and the stressful event that bothered them the most. Event-specific measures included the se

Change in Defense Mechanisms During a Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Defense mechanisms (DMs) are strategies used by the individuals to protect the ego. Therefore, compulsive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be recognized as DMs. We analyzed how DMs changed in a brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD. This was a quasi-experimental study with 92 OCD patients (aged 18-60 years). We used the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview to confirm OCD diagnosis, and we assessed the DMs with the Defense Style Questionnaire at three time points. Through a latent change score modeling, we found that the mature mechanism presented a const…

Subgenomic flaviviral RNAs and human proteins: in silico exploration of anti-host defense mechanisms.

Flaviviruses pose significant global health threats, infecting over 300 million people annually. Among their evasion strategies, the production of subgenomic flaviviral RNAs (sfRNAs) from the 3' UTR of viral genomes is particularly notable. Utilizing a comprehensive in silico approach with the catRAPID algorithm, we analyzed over 300,000 interactions between sfRNAs and human proteins derived from more than 8000 flavivirus genomes, including Dengue, Zika, Yellow Fever, West Nile, and Japanese Encephalitis viruses. By providing the first extensive atlas of sfRNA interactions, we offer new insigh

The influenza chronicles: From the 1918 pandemic to current understanding of host defense mechanisms.

In this special edition of the Biomedical Journal, we learn about the battle between host and influenza virus at the respiratory epithelium, and how the history of influenza pandemics has driven both major advances in the understanding of immunology and planning for future outbreaks. We also learn of a nanoparticle system that holds promise for photodynamic therapy in breast cancer. Finally, we add evidence to the debate of the safety of a minimally invasive technique for aortic valve replacement in elderly patients.

Innate defense mechanisms against HSV-1 infection in the target tissues, skin and brain.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) initiates productive infection in mucocutaneous tissues to cause cold sores and establishes latent infection in the trigeminal ganglia. Under certain circumstances, HSV-1 may cause encephalitis. Here, we compared host innate defenses against HSV-1 in the two clinically relevant tissues, skin and brain, using a unique ex vivo system of organ culture. Upon HSV-1 infection and spread, apoptosis induction was observed in the skin, but not in brain tissues. While the two tissues elicited interferon (IFN-β) response upon HSV1 infection, IFN induction was more robu

SIRT6 protects cardiomyocytes against ischemia/reperfusion injury by augmenting FoxO3α-dependent antioxidant defense mechanisms.

SIRT6, a member of the NAD(+)-dependent class III deacetylase sirtuin family, has been revealed to play important roles in promoting cellular resistance against oxidative stress. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress are the crucial mechanisms underlying cellular damage and dysfunction in cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, but the role of SIRT6 in I/R-induced ROS and oxidative stress is poorly understood. In this study, by using heterozygous SIRT6 knockout (SIRT6(+/-)) mice and cultured neonatal cardiomyocyte models, we investigated how SIRT6 mediates oxid
