Commonly used antimotility and antidiarrheal drugs were administered to six ileostomized subjects to determine whether their normal ileal excreta and that induced by prune juice could be altered. A total of 49 studies were performed, 21 with and 28 without prune juice. Bismuth subgallate was the only drug which significantly reduced the normal ileal excreta (P less than 0.05). Shikimic acid (SA) has been mainly used in the pharmaceutical industry for production of drugs, however, recently it has also appeared in the world of cosmetics. So far, there have not been many publications on cosmetics containing SA or research studies on the compound, especially those that would involve testing cosmetic products on subjects. Contact dermatitis to the emulsifier stearamidoethyl diethylamine phosphate was demonstrated in 4 patients. In 3 patients, the emulsifier was present in a commonly used over-the-counter dry skin lotion and in the 4th in a deodorant. In 2 cases, the patients overtly suspected that the product was the cause of the dermatitis. Patch tests to the products were positive. The emulsifier was identified as the contact allergen after testing with coded deletion and/or individual ingredient samples provided by the manufacturer. Out of 14 patients with axillary dermatitis due to an antiperspirant, and with positive patch test reactions to the product, the sensitizer could be demonstrated in 12. Of these, 11 were positive to propantheline bromide, 3 to trichlorocarbanilide and one to propylene glycol. The antiperspirant contains 90% propylene glycol, which is an irritant under occlusion. When applied in the axillae, where occlusive conditions usually prevail, an irritant effect of propylene glycol may have promoted sensitization to the ingredients of the antiperspirant.

A 54-year-old woman had a 3 year history of a recurrent bilateral axillary rash during the summer months. Both axillae showed hyperkeratotic, fissured and cobblestone plaques. Skin biopsy showed the histology previously defined as axillary granular parakeratosis. This finding may indeed represent an unusual contact reaction to anti-perspirants interfering with epidermal keratinization.
