Dependency Traits, Relationship Power, and Health Risks in Women Receiving Sexually-Transmitted Infection Clinic Services.

In prior research, having traits consistent with a personality disorder has been shown to be related to substance use and high-risk sexual activity; however, few studies have examined relationships between dependency traits and health-jeopardizing behaviors. Individuals with traits consistent with dependent personality disorder may be more likely to be in a primary relationship characterized by unhealthy conditions, including physical abuse from a partner, low assertiveness in sexual situations, and partner infidelity. In addition, dependency traits may be associated with unhealthy coping (e.g…

Severity factors associated with borderline personality disorder among misusers in an outpatient sample in Spain.

The comorbidity between substance-use disorders and borderline personality disorder (SUD-BPD) with other psychiatric disorders has been little studied. A total of 937 drug-dependent patients were evaluated using semistructured interviews and 13.7% were SUD-BPD patients. After multivariate analysis, gender, Affective Disorder (OR 2.59), Anxiety Disorder (OR 1.90), Eating Disorders (OR 4.29), Cocaine (OR 2.16), benzodiazepine dependence (OR 1.90), early age of onset of drug consumption (OR 0.94), and dependent (OR 4.04), paranoid (OR 3.70) and antisocial personality disorders (OR 3.46) were asso

The contribution of temperament, childhood neglect, and abuse to the development of personality dysfunction: a comparison of three models.

We examined the contribution of temperament, childhood neglect, and abuse to the development of personality dysfunction as postulated in three different but correlated models of personality: the psychobiological, Vaillant's psychoanalytic, and DSM psychopathology models. Character, defense style, and personality disorder symptomatology (the dependent variables), and temperament, childhood neglect, and abuse (the independent variables) were assessed in 168 depressed outpatients. High harm avoidance (temperament) tended to be the strongest and most consistent risk factor across the three models.

Somatoform disorders: comorbidity with other DSM-III-R psychiatric diagnoses in Greece.

From a total sample of 1,448 psychiatric outpatients, 175 (12.1%) received a diagnosis of a somatoform disorder according to DSM-III-R criteria. One hundred twenty-two (70%) of these patients had another current axis I diagnosis, and this rate increased to 79% (139 of 175) when lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were recorded. The most frequent comorbid diagnoses were depressive disorders, i.e., dysthymia and major depression, and then anxiety disorders, mainly panic disorder. One hundred ten (63%) of the somatoform patients met the criteria for a personality disorder, significantly higher than th

The assessment of personality characteristics in depressed and dependent psychiatric inpatients.

The diagnosis and treatment of depression may be complicated by the presence of excessive dependency needs. Previous research has found stable personality traits useful in identifying depressive subtypes. This study was designed to assess the personality characteristics of 106 psychiatric inpatients. Subjects were grouped according to the presence or absence of two primary dimensions: depression and dependency. Results indicated that both depression and dependency were significantly related to various indices of psychopathology. Main effects were more useful than interactions, implying that de

Temperament and personality features in panic disorder with or without comorbid mood disorders.

Personality and temperament features, assessed with the Structured Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders-Revised (SIDP-R) and the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), respectively, were evaluated in 62 patients affected by panic disorder with (PD + MD) (n = 22) or without comorbid mood disorder (PD) (n = 40). A significant difference in the prevalence of personality disorders (PD + MD, 86% vs. PD, 62%; P < 0.05), particularly dependent (PD + DM, 50% vs. PD, 17%; P < 0.01) and borderline (PD + DM, 9% vs. PD, 0%; P = 0.05) personality disorders, was observed between the groups

[Depression and personality disorders].

The association between depressive disorders and personality disorders is frequent. They need to be acknowledged in general practice for a better treatment (therapeutic alliance, compliance). Twenty to 50% of psychiatric inpatients and 50 to 85% of outpatients with a major depressive episode also have an associated personality disorder, most frequently borderline, avoidant, dependent or obsessive. These associations, as well as the so-called depressive personality disorder, have many implications for other persistant mood disorders such as dysthymic disorders. This article discusses the therap

Personality disorders and alcoholism treatment outcome.

The relationship existing between personality disorders (classified according to DSM III) and alcohol treatment outcome was evaluated in 404 alcoholics admitted to the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Trieste, Italy. One quarter of the subjects had personality disorders, mainly of the 'antisocial', 'dependent', and 'borderline' subtypes. Alcohol abuse was specifically related to 'antisocial' personalities. Marked differences in treatment outcome among personality disorders were found. Group therapy for alcoholism was not beneficial to 'antisocial' personalities; it was most useful among

A five-factor measure of dependent personality traits.

This study provides convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity data for a new measure of dependent personality traits from the perspective of the five-factor model (FFM). Dependent personality trait scales were constructed as maladaptive variants of FFM facets (e.g., Gullibility as a maladaptive variant of FFM trust). Based on responses from 383 undergraduates, the convergent validity of the Five-Factor Dependency Inventory (FFDI) scales was tested with respect to 2 measures of the FFM, 6 dependency trait scales, and 4 measures of dependent personality disorder. Discriminant validity w…

The convergent and discriminant validity of the MCMI as a measure of the DSM-III personality disorders.

The personality scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) were constructed and validated to measure the typology developed by Millon (1981). The ability of the MCMI to measure the DSM-III personality disorders has not yet been empirically evaluated. The current study found better convergent validity for the DSM-III personality disorders that are consistent with Millon's typology (i.e., the avoidant and the dependent) than for the disorders that are inconsistent (i.e., the antisocial and the passive-aggressive). However, the results may reflect some advantages Millon's typology

Diagnostic agreement between the DSM-IV and ICD-10-DCR personality disorders.

The SCID-II Personality Questionnaire, modified for DSM-IV and ICD-10 Diagnostic Criteria for Research (ICD-10-DCR), was administered to 58 consecutive patients with agoraphobia with panic disorder in order to screen for personality disorders (PDs) and assess diagnostic agreement between DSM-IV and ICD-10-DCR. The diagnostic agreement, as expressed by kappa values, was 0.78 for the presence of any personality disorder (PD), but it ranged from 0.51 for schizoid PD to 0.83 for dependent PD. There was a tendency for ICD-10-DCR to overdiagnose PDs, except for borderline and dependent PDs. The sour

Comorbidity of bulimia nervosa and personality disorder.

Thirty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa with at least three bingeing episodes a week were compared with 30 age- and sex-matched controls on DSM-III personality measures. The bulimic patients were more likely to display cluster B (histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 15.0) and cluster C (avoidant, dependent, compulsive, and passive-aggressive) personality abnormalities (odds ratio 4.3) than were the community controls. This study supports the finding that personality disorder is a possible risk factor for bulimia.
